Endovascular recanalization therapy for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) began with local fibrinolysis therapy using the development of microcatheters. Subsequently, mechanical thrombectomy therapy began with the development of the Merci retriever, which uses a shape-memory spiral wire to entangle thrombi in intracranial arteries.
