AIM: To explore factors influencing postoperative drainage volume and duration after reduction mammoplasty for perioperative nursing.

DESIGN: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 83 patients who underwent reduction mammoplasty between January 2023 and October 2025.

METHODS: Patients' characteristics and parameters related to the surgery were recorded. Univariable and multivariable linear regression and correlation analyses were performed to identify the correlation between postoperative drainage and the variables.

DATA SOURCES: Data were extracted from routine de-identified electronic medical records.

RESULTS: The mean postoperative drainage volume was 81.2 ± 80.4 mL, and the mean drainage duration was 2.5 ± 0.84 days. Preoperative activated partial thromboplastin time, operation time, intraoperative blood loss, and resected tissue weight were independent predictors of drainage volume. Body mass index, operation time, and blood loss independently predicted prolonged drainage duration.

CONCLUSION: Multiple perioperative factors jointly affect postoperative drainage outcomes after reduction mammoplasty. These correlational findings offer preliminary references for individualised perioperative nursing management.

IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND/OR PATIENT CARE: High-risk patients may require targeted preoperative education and intensified drainage observation. Further studies are needed to verify the clinical effectiveness of such nursing strategies.

IMPACT: This study supplemented comprehensive perioperative predictors for postoperative drainage after reduction mammoplasty. The main findings identified several perioperative factors associated with postoperative drainage outcomes. These preliminary correlational results may provide reference for perioperative nursing and offer hypotheses for future clinical validation.

REPORTING METHOD: This study followed EQUATOR guidelines and the STROBE statement for retrospective observational studies.

PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: No Patient or Public Contribution. No patients or members of the public were involved in the design, conduct, analysis, or manuscript preparation for this study. This retrospective work solely uses de-identified routine clinical data from medical records for secondary analysis.
