A Study of Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Lung Cancer Prevention Care for American Indian/Alaska Native People.

BACKGROUND

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death among American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) people. Lung cancer screening (LCS) remains underutilized among AI/AN people. Multi-disciplinary perspectives can help to inform lung cancer prevention care for this population.

METHODS

We conducted a mixed-methods study with healthcare providers and researchers who intersect with AI/AN care. Participants completed an electronic questionnaire and qualitative interviews about their role(s), perceptions of commercial tobacco use and cessation services, and LCS in AI/AN communities. Survey data were analyzed descriptively. Interview transcripts were analyzed using applied thematic analysis, with final themes organized by Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research domains.

RESULTS

Multi-disciplinary care providers (n = 21) reported significant gaps in awareness of and access to tobacco cessation and LCS in AI/AN communities. Key themes include tailoring lung health resources to AI/AN cultures and improving access to and awareness of LCS. Ideal programming centers culture and family and applies Indigenous methodologies to optimize resource development.

CONCLUSION

Study findings support culturally tailored resources and barrier directed supports to enhance commercial tobacco cessation and LCS in marginalized communities. By working collaboratively within and across disciplines, healthcare systems, and Tribal communities, we can optimize care to promote lung cancer prevention in AI/AN communities.
