OBJECTIVES

Our study aim was to develop a deeper understanding of CIPN-related QOL in a sample of breast cancer survivors.

METHODS

We utilized purposive sampling to recruit breast cancer survivors with chronic CIPN for our study using photovoice methodology. Participants were enrolled, received photovoice-related training, and spent four weeks photographing their life with CIPN. Data collection consisted of photo interviewing, a photo discussion focus group, a photovoice exhibition de-briefing focus group, and field notes. Data were analyzed in NVivo 11 Pro® using thematic and visual content analysis.

RESULTS

Nine participants completed the study. Six primary themes emerged from the data: (a) advice for clinicians, (b) positive photovoice experience, and CIPN (c) causes pain, (d) affects relationships, (e) causes disruptions, and (f) alters self-image.

CONCLUSIONS

In this sample of breast cancer survivors, CIPN negatively impacted their overall QOL. The effect of CIPN on QOL was multifaceted and inseparable from the participants' overall cancer treatment experience regardless of survivorship length. All participants expressed gratitude for participating in the study and described having increased feelings of self-efficacy and support. The participants would like to create a photography book for cancer treatment centers.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: Nursing care of patients diagnosed with breast cancer should include repeated education regarding the potential severity and lifelong effects of CIPN and the benefits of study participation, creative therapies, and group support during survivorship.
