INTRODUCTION: Household waste sorting is a situated pro-environmental choice shaped not only by environmental evaluations but also by perceived norms, sorting knowledge, motivational cues, and practical opportunities or barriers.

METHODS: We compared item-level responses in 102 complete questionnaire records collected from two university-community study areas, one in Hong Kong SAR, China, and the other in Chuzhou, Anhui Province, China (51 records per area), using an 18-item, five-point questionnaire adapted from published studies. No archived analytic record was excluded. We report raw response distributions, two-sided Mann-Whitney tests with Holm correction across 18 items, directionally aligned Cliff's delta with bootstrap confidence intervals, and internal-consistency diagnostics.

RESULTS: Both samples strongly endorsed the resource-conservation value of sorting, and the between-sample contrast for this item did not meet the Holm-adjusted criterion. Thirteen item-level contrasts met the Holm-adjusted criterion in the full-sample analysis. Records from the Hong Kong study area showed higher self-reported sorting-and-station knowledge, perceived regulatory constraint, publicity and education exposure, conditional willingness when bin labels were clear, and perceived facility labeling and proximity. Records from the Chuzhou study area showed stronger economic-gain motivation, whereas those from Hong Kong reported a greater household storage-space burden. Among the four original project item sets, only the environmental knowledge, publicity and education (EP) items showed high internal consistency.

DISCUSSION: High endorsement of resource conservation in both samples occurred alongside context-specific normative, informational, motivational, and perceived-opportunity profiles. These findings illustrate how context-sensitive psychological assessment can generate study-area-specific candidate intervention hypotheses for subsequent behavioral testing in larger comparative studies.
