"A new normal": A qualitative study of emotional and psychosocial concerns in early-onset colorectal cancer survivors.
Аннотация
BACKGROUND
The incidence of early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC) has increased over the past three decades. Diagnoses coincide with formative emotional and social life stages, creating challenges for patients overlooked by survivorship guidelines. This study explored the emotional and psychosocial impacts of EOCRC.
METHODS
We conducted interviews with 63 patients with EOCRC at seven academic medical centers. Interviews focused on emotional and psychosocial needs and were analyzed using thematic analysis.
RESULTS
Five themes were identified: (1) emotional and psychosocial distress; (2) dealing with uncertainty; (3) coming to terms with a "new normal"; (4) managing distress; and (5) role of medical providers. Patients described disruptions to life events and access to EOCRC-specific mental health and informational resources was an unmet need.
CONCLUSION
EOCRC profoundly impacts emotional and psychosocial well-being. Individuals experienced difficulties adjusting to a "new normal" affecting identity formation, family planning, and career progression. Access to tailored support services was lacking.
