Аннотация

BACKGROUND

The skin-brain axis has emerged as a novel conceptual framework describing bidirectional neuroimmune, neuroendocrine, and microbial communication between the skin and the central nervous system. Shared inflammatory pathways, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis dysregulation, neurotransmitter signaling, neurotrophins, and microbiome-related mechanisms may contribute to the overlap between dermatologic and psychiatric disorders.

OBJECTIVE

To review the biological and clinical implications of the skin-brain axis in dermatologic and psychiatric disorders.

METHODS

This perspective review summarizes current evidence regarding the biological foundations and clinical implications of the skin-brain axis. The article integrates findings related to inflammatory skin disorders, psychiatric symptoms, immune signaling, microbial composition, and therapeutic approaches relevant to psychodermatology.

RESULTS

Evidence from psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, acne vulgaris, chronic urticaria, and prurigo nodularis demonstrates substantial overlap between inflammatory skin diseases and symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, and suicidality. Emerging data further support the role of cutaneous immune signaling and microbial composition in modulating emotional and cognitive processes. The review also highlights therapeutic convergence between dermatology and psychiatry, including biologic therapies, psychopharmacology, cognitive behavioral therapy, and neuroimmune-targeted interventions.

CONCLUSIONS

Understanding the skin-brain axis may improve recognition of the bidirectional relationship between dermatologic and psychiatric disorders and support more comprehensive, integrated approaches to patients with complex inflammatory and neuropsychiatric conditions.
