Eight-year follow-up of oral health-related quality of life in anodontia patients after dental implant rehabilitation.
Аннотация
OBJECTIVES
This study aimed to investigate the impact of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and to assess aesthetic satisfaction in individuals with anodontia across different stages of rehabilitation with implant-supported fixed prostheses or overdentures.
METHODS
This longitudinal study involved seven patients with ectodermal dysplasia and complete anodontia, treated at Nhan Tam Dental Clinic, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, from 2016 to 2025. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire that covered demographics, medical history, oral rehabilitation techniques, and OHRQoL assessed via the Vietnamese version of the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14VN). Aesthetic satisfaction was measured using a visual analog scale (VAS).
RESULTS
Seven individuals (n = 7) with complete anodontia, predominantly male (57.1 %), diagnosed at a mean age of 25.9 ± 7.3 years, were followed for an average of 4.6 ± 3.0 years (range: 1.6-8.9) after implant placement. OHRQoL improved markedly, with OHIP-14VN scores decreasing from 40.1 ± 10.4 pre-treatment to 22.3 ± 8.3 after provisional prostheses, 10.3 ± 5.1 after definitive rehabilitation, and 5.5 ± 7.8 at the 8-year follow-up. Aesthetic satisfaction increased from 3.6 ± 1.8 at baseline to 6.7 ± 1.5 post-provisional treatment, 9.3 ± 1.0 after definitive rehabilitation, and stabilized at 9.5 ± 0.7 at the 8-year follow-up.
CONCLUSIONS
Implant-supported prosthetic rehabilitation resulted in sustained improvements in oral health-related quality of life and aesthetic satisfaction in individuals with anodontia both during treatment and up to 8 years of long-term follow-up.
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Implant-supported prosthetic rehabilitation demonstrated long-lasting improvements in oral health-related quality of life and patient-reported aesthetic outcomes among individuals with anodontia. These findings highlight the clinical relevance of timely and continuous prosthetic intervention in optimizing functional capacity and psychosocial adaptation.
