BACKGROUND: The Indian population exhibits distinct anthropometric characteristics compared to western populations, necessitating the establishment of region-specific normative values for uterine and ovarian dimensions.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to derive normative reference ranges for ovarian volume, follicle number, uterine size, and endometrial thickness among Indian women of reproductive age and its correlation with anthropometric and hormonal parameters.

METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional, community-based study was conducted among 1648 Indian women aged 18-40 years from diverse geographic regions. Participants were selected using multistage sampling. Pregnant or lactating women and women with known gynecological disorders were excluded. Clinical, biochemical, hormonal and radiological assessments were obtained using standardized protocols.

RESULTS: The mean uterine length measured via transabdominal ultrasound was 7.09 ± 1.64 cm, and transvaginal ultrasound showed a length of 7.11 ± 1.83 cm. Ovarian volumes were 7.06 ± 3.44 cc (left) and 7.26 ± 3.29 cc (right) using transabdominal scans, while transvaginal scans showed 7.12 ± 3.38 cc (left) and 7.45 ± 3.28 cc (right). The mean follicle count was 6.05 ± 3.18 (left ovary) and 5.89 ± 3.03 (right ovary) via transabdominal ultrasound. Ovarian volume was negatively correlated with age, while positively correlated with body weight, height, hirsutism score, insulin resistance, and testosterone. Endometrial thickness correlated positively with age and waist circumference but negatively with body weight, BMI, skin fold and triceps thickness.

CONCLUSION: This study provides comprehensive normative ultrasound ranges for dimensions of uterus and ovaries in Indian women of reproductive age and its correlation with anthropometric and hormonal parameters. These normative values will aid in better diagnosis and management of reproductive health disorders in the Indian population.
