Аннотация

INTRODUCTION

Parental monitoring processes, including parents' efforts to gather information about adolescents' activities, peers, and whereabouts, along with adolescents' disclosure of this information, are critical mechanisms through which parents socialize youth. Yet, existing work primarily examines parental monitoring in Western contexts. We know less about how parental monitoring unfolds in India, limiting our understanding of how familial, cultural, and societal factors shape parents' regulation of their youth's activities, peers, and whereabouts. Finally, extant research has largely focused on youth-centered outcomes of parental monitoring, such as adolescent behaviors and adjustment, with comparatively scant attention paid to how monitoring is associated with the quality of youth's relationships with their mothers and fathers.

METHODS

Youth in New Delhi, India (N = 266) reported on parental monitoring at two time points: 2011 (age 12) and 2012 (age 13). We explored variations in parental monitoring by gender and key demographic variables, and whether parental monitoring was associated with youth-parent relationship quality with mothers and fathers.

RESULTS &

CONCLUSIONS

Parental monitoring remained stable over time, and girls reported higher levels than boys at both ages. Parental monitoring was positively correlated with relationship quality with mothers and fathers, and youth gender was not associated with these relations. Relationship quality with parents declined, on average, with age. By focusing on Indian adolescents, our study fills a key gap in understanding how parental monitoring interacts with parent-youth relationship quality within a culture that values familial closeness and respect for parental authority.
