All-terrain vehicle related urethral injuries: An evaluation of the National Trauma Database.

BACKGROUND: U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that from 2018 to 2020 there were 94,700 off-highway vehicle accidents with 92% of those injuries related to all-terrain vehicles (ATV). An estimated 300 deaths were in children less than age 16. There has not been any previous evaluation of urethral injuries resulting from ATV accidents. We sought to define the volume and demographics of ATV-related urethral injuries. METHODS: Data was obtained from the National Trauma Database (NTDB) Trauma Quality Program over a 7-year period (2016-2022). ICD-10 codes were used to identify patien

Utility task vehicle crashes and injuries in Iowa.

BACKGROUND: Utility task vehicles (UTVs) are increasing in popularity and have outsold all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) in recent years. However, there are few publications related to UTV crashes and injuries. Our objective was to describe UTV crash and injury epidemiology in the state of Iowa. METHODS: A comprehensive database of off-highway vehicle events from the Iowa Department of Transportation, State Trauma Registry and Department of Natural Resources, as well as from newspaper articles was created and used to evaluate Iowa UTV crashes and injuries from 2002 to 2019. Frequencies and continge

Pediatric Off-Road Vehicle Injuries: Side-by-Sides Worse for the Upper Extremity.

OBJECTIVES: Side-by-side (SXS) and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are different off-road vehicles (ORVs) but often categorized together in the literature. We hypothesized pediatric upper extremity (UE) fracture patterns and injury severity scores (ISS) differ between ORV types. METHODS: The authors' home-state trauma repository identified 157 pediatric patients aged 0 to 17 years with UE fractures after ORV accidents during 2011-2021. ORV injuries, fracture type, and procedures were identified using International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision and 10th Revision coding followed by manua

Research on Vibration Reduction Performance of Electromagnetic Active Seat Suspension Based on Sliding Mode Control.

Vehicle seats have a significant impact on the comfort of passengers. The development of seats is a field in which scholars are widely concerned. In this study, we add an electromagnetic levitation structure and design a new active seat suspension based on the passive seat suspension. Then, simulation research is carried out based on a C-level road surface combined with integral sliding mode control and state feedback control. The results show that both state feedback control and integral sliding mode control positively affect vehicle seat vibration reduction, and integral sliding mode control

Investigating risk factors associated with pedestrian crash occurrence and injury severity in Texas.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates various risk factors associated with pedestrian crash occurrence and injury severity based on 78,497 reported pedestrian-involved crashes across Texas from 2010 through 2019. METHODS: Crashes are mapped to over 708,738 road segments, along with road design, land use, transit, hospital, rainfall, and other location features. Negative binomial models examine the association between pedestrian crash frequency and various contributing factors, and a heteroskedastic ordered probit model investigates the severity of injuries at the individual crash level. RESULTS

Socioeconomic factors associated with helmet use in pediatric ATV and dirt bike trauma.

OBJECTIVES: Recreational off-road vehicle crashes can produce severe injury and death among children, often from head trauma sustained while riding unhelmeted. Although required for competition, recreational riders commonly forego helmets. This study aimed to identify socioeconomic factors associated with unhelmeted injuries among children riding all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and dirt bikes recreationally, thus informing injury prevention efforts. METHODS: A retrospective review was completed of patients younger than 18 years who presented after recreational ATV or dirt bike crash to a single A

Risk factors associated with quadbike crashes: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Quadbikes or all-terrain vehicles are known for their propensity for crashes resulting in injury, disability, and death. The control of these needless losses resulting from quadbike crashes has become an essential contributor to sustainable development goals. Understanding the risk factors for such injuries is essential for developing preventive policies and strategies. The aim of this review was to identify the risk factors associated with quadbike crashes at multiple levels through a systematic review of a wide range of study designs. METHODS: The study incorporated a mixed-meth

A Comprehensive Report on All-Terrain Vehicles and Youth: Continuing Challenges for Injury Prevention.

All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) represent a serious and ongoing public health and safety concern for children and adolescents. Survey studies indicate that high proportions of youth ride ATVs in both rural and nonrural populations. The significant human and economic costs of pediatric ATV-related deaths and injuries result from a number of major risk factors that are highly common in pediatric ATV crashes: operating adult-size vehicles, riding with or as passengers, lack of protective equipment, and riding on public roads. Other less well-studied but potentially significant risk factors are speed,

Using a Resident-Led School Outreach Program to Improve Knowledge of All-Terrain Vehicle Safety.

BACKGROUND: During the past decade, all-terrain vehicle (ATV)-related injuries treated in US emergency departments decreased by 33%, down to approximately 100,000 injuries in 2016. In comparison, the number of children evaluated for ATV injuries in the Children's of Alabama emergency department more than doubled between 2006 and 2016, counter to the national trend. The American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines state that ATV operators should be at least 16 years old; however, children younger than 16 continue to represent almost one-third of all ATV-related injuries nationwide, and nearly all

Analysis of factors affecting injury severity for riders or occupants of all-terrain vehicles and golf carts involved in police-reported crashes.

In recent years, the popularity of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) in the United States (US) has increased, and the number of ATV driver and passenger deaths have also increased substantially in the last few decades. Riders or occupants of ATVs as well as golf carts are particularly vulnerable to injury, not only due to the lack of protection and safety equipment offered by their vehicles, but also the propensity for ejection in the event of a crash. Given the vulnerability of these road users, it's critical to understand factors which may affect injury severity to plan effective countermeasures a
