Examination of driver license renewal policies and older driver crash and injury rates by rurality.

BACKGROUND: Among adults aged 65 and older, motor-vehicle crashes are the second leading cause of injury-related death-following falls. State driver license renewal laws commonly have provisions targeting older drivers, but limited evidence exists on their effectiveness in reducing crash and injury rates and how this may vary by rurality. This study aimed to investigate the impact of state driver license renewal policies on older driver crash and injury outcomes, by rurality. METHODS: Crash data, license renewal policies, and other relevant state policies were drawn from 13 U.S. states for th

Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Restore Standards in Medical and Dental Education in Pakistan.

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Examining the role of random parameters and unobserved heterogeneity in the frequency-severity of rural freeway run-off-road and fixed-object crashes: A Bayesian hierarchical-geospatial approach.

Fixed-object collisions and run-off-road (FOC-ROR) crashes are more severe and frequent in rural freeways compared to other crash types, particularly involving light vehicles. The relationship between influential factors and crash frequency-severity is complex due to unobserved heterogeneities. This study developed a comprehensive method integrating spatial autocorrelation cluster analysis and the Bayesian Hierarchical Random Parameter (BHRP) model to quantitatively examine unobserved effects and parameter uncertainties in FOC-ROR, FOC, and ROR crashes separately. The study also emphasizes seg

Is legislation effective in reducing risks of all-terrain vehicle-related injuries? A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Over decades, governments have enacted policies and legislation mandating strategies to reduce the incidence and severity of all-terrain vehicle (ATV)-related injuries. We performed a systematic review to determine the efficacy of laws and policies in reducing these injuries. METHODS: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, 20 articles from the peer-reviewed literature were systematically selected. Associations between legislation/policy and changes or differences in injury numbers, rates or severity were queried. RESULTS: Data wer

Social and Individual Influences on ATV and UTV Operating Practices of Young Adult Agricultural Workers.

HIGHLIGHTS: Over 50% of the young adult agricultural workers surveyed reported never wearing a helmet, seatbelt, or hearing protection when operating an ATV or UTV. Young adult agricultural workers' mean ATV and UTV safety scores ranged from 1 to 4.44 on a scale of 1 to 5. Gender, supervisor influence, and risk-taking behaviors significantly influenced young agricultural workers ATV and UTV safety scores. ABSTRACT: ATV and UTV crashes are a leading cause of agricultural-related injury and death in the United States. Young adult agricultural workers (under the age of 25) contribute substantial

Clear zone or W-beam guardrail for rural highways? A Full Bayes before-after evaluation by employing the Poisson Gamma-Lindley model.

Run-off-road crashes often result in fatal and severe injuries on rural highways. Clear zones and W-beam guardrails are often installed to reduce run-off-road crashes and the extent of severe injuries. While the effectiveness of clear zone improvement and W-beams has been studied, their comparative effects in a similar empirical setting are not well known. At the same time, crashes on rural highways are often characterized by a high frequency of zero counts; however, models capable of addressing this issue-such as the Poisson-Gamma Lindley models-have not yet been tested in before-after evalua

You can't have your cake and eat it too: the paradox of the American public supporting road safety but reluctant to pay the price - evidence from a discrete choice experiment.

BACKGROUND: An estimated 44,680 people died in motor-vehicle crashes in the United States in 2024. A disproportionate share of these deaths involved young people. In 2023 alone, these crashes cost the U.S. $48 billion and $457 billion among adolescents aged 13-19 and in the entire population, respectively. The Safe System approach aims to improve roadway safety through safer drivers, roads, vehicles, speeds, and optimal post-crash care. Despite its effectiveness and federal investments, U.S. adoption lags other countries. Understanding public attitudes could enhance uptake. OBJECTIVES: To ide

Off-road vehicle use by children and adolescents: Strategies to prevent injury.

Off-road vehicles (ORVs) are motorized vehicles engineered specifically for navigating rough terrain. They are often seen in rural, remote, and agricultural settings, but are widely used in Canada, primarily for recreation, and are responsible for a disproportionate number of severe injuries and deaths in the paediatric population. ORVs are becoming heavier and faster, and injuries associated with their use by children and adolescents are similar in severity to those sustained in motor vehicle crashes. However, while the automotive industry is bound by safety legislation, strict enforcement, a

Occupational hazard to on-road air pollution within passenger transport micro-environments: evidence from traffic congested areas in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Traffic-related on-road air pollution is a major contributor to outdoor air pollution globally, particularly in developing countries most often due to outdated vehicle technology, and weaker emission control regulations. Drivers providing passenger transport services are constantly at higher risk. This study investigated the exposure to air pollutants of transport microenvironments (TME) of such vehicles most popular in heavy-traffic congested areas in the district of Colombo, Sri Lanka. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the TME of three vehicular types: three-whee

Motorized Two-Wheeled Vehicles Contribute Disproportionately to the Increase in Pandemic-Period Road Traffic Fatalities in New York State.

Background: New York State, like many other states, experienced a significant increase in road traffic deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic that is not fully understood. Our earlier work using the Safe System framework suggests a shift in the distribution of vehicle types that may have contributed to this phenomenon. Methods: To further investigate this, variables from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) were mapped onto the Safe System framework and used to examine factors associated with motorized two- and three-wheeled vehicle deaths. Two time periods were examined: pre-pandemic (1

An analysis of bus drivers' interactions with motorists.

Driving a bus in the city is a task that demands attention to changing road conditions while dealing with passengers' needs. Bus drivers often experience aggression from passengers and other road users, which sometimes escalate, eventually leading to violence. However, many road conflicts are rarely reported and, hence, difficult to study. This article analyses bus drivers' reactions to conflicts with other motorists in Santiago (Chile), where public transport accounts for 35% of the total trips. Four percent of the population of bus drivers (639) responded to a survey with questions about job

Do automation and digitalization distract drivers? A systematic review.

Driving is a multifaceted activity involving a complex interplay of cognitive, perceptual, and motor skills, demanding continuous attention on the road. In recent years, the increased integration of automation and digitalization technologies in vehicles has improved drivers' convenience and safety. However, the spare attentional capacity available during automation and the prevalence of various infotainment systems in vehicles enable drivers to perform some secondary tasks not related to driving, which may divert their attention away from the road, increasing the chances of accidents. The obje

Study on the risk assessment of Pedestrian-Vehicle conflicts in channelized Right-Turn lanes based on the Hierarchical-Grey Entropy-Cloud model.

Channelized right-turn lanes (CRTLs) in urban areas have been effective in improving the efficiency of right-turning vehicles but have also presented negative impacts on pedestrian movement. Pedestrians experience confusion regarding the allocation of road space when crossing crosswalks within these areas, leading to frequent conflicts between pedestrians and motor vehicles. In this paper, considering the characteristics of pedestrian-vehicle conflicts at channelized right-turn lanes as well as the ambiguity and uncertainty of the causes, a comprehensive assignment combined with a cloud model

Pediatric all-terrain vehicle (ATV) related head injury rates and patterns: A 10-year nationwide analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The use of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) carries significant risk of permanent injury and death, disproportionately affecting children. These injuries commonly affect the head and are especially severe among children as they are often unhelmeted and more likely than adults to experience rollover injuries. Many studies examining patients with ATV-related injuries are single-center cohort studies, with few focusing specifically on head injuries. In the present study, we aimed to characterize the annual incidence of ATV-related head injuries between 2012 and 2021, classify and compare
