Would a helmet law for snowmobile riders reduce head injuries?

Swedish authorities have discussed making the use of helmets for snowmobile riders compulsory. To evaluate the possible injury-reducing potential of such a law, 245 non-fatally injured riders and 104 fatalities were analyzed. Non-minor (AIS > 1) head injuries were far less common than in motorcycling, and many fast driving young snowmobile riders seem to use helmets regardless of a law. The persons with head injuries who had not used helmets, or whose helmet use was unknown, had violated other laws, most often the Traffic Temperance Law, or the law forbidding driving on public roads. A helmet

Recreational injuries and deaths in northern Wisconsin: analysis of injuries and fatalities from snowmobiles over 3 years.

Snowmobiles represent the second most common cause of trauma related to motorized vehicles in northern Wisconsin. The epidemiology of these injuries is evaluated. Specific comparisons between snowmobiles and other vehicles are made. We conclude that snowmobiles represent a controllable etiology for injuries and death. Our data suggest some interventions to prevent injuries and improve treatment.

Alcohol and drug use among motor vehicle collision victims admitted to a regional trauma unit: demographic, injury, and crash characteristics.

This study examined the incidence of alcohol and drugs in a sample of seriously injured motor vehicle collision victims, and differences related to pre-crash use of alcohol and/or other drugs on demographic variables, injury severity measures, and crash variables. The sample selected were all motor vehicle collision admissions to the Regional Trauma Unit at the Sunnybrook Health Science Centre in Toronto, Ontario, over a 37-month period (N = 854). Prospective demographic and injury-related information were collected from hospital charts, and crash data were collected from motor vehicle collisi

[Accident causes and prevention of injuries in Enduro-motorbike sport].

365 participants of the 64. Enduro-World Championship in 1989 reported 232 injuries within a 10-years-period of motorbike driving. The knee was most frequent (21.5 pc., mainly ligament ruptures) injured, followed by fracture of the clavicle (18.5 pc.), hand (15.5 pc.) and damages of the shoulder. Fractures are very common (55.5 pc.) in motorbike sports. Injuries often were produced by collisions with other motorbikes or trees. Driving mistakes, jumps, slipping wheels and overturn were other causes for an accident. During the championship 13 accidents were registered. In a clinical examination

Snowmobile trauma: an eleven-year experience.

Records of 88 patients with snowmobile injuries from 1977 to 1987 were reviewed to identify the types of trauma. Data collected included age, sex, method and degree of injury, use of safety attire, and risk factors. There were 77 males and 11 females. Seventeen (19.3%) were children under the age of 16. Poor driving judgment involved in the hitting of obstacles led to the majority of injuries. There were 106 fractures in 71 patients. Eighteen patients (25%) had more than one fracture. Eleven patients had loss of consciousness. Eighty-eight other injuries resulted for a total of 205 injuries. T

Special report. New products that improve officer performance, safety.

The need for products that improve performance of security officers is counterbalanced these days by budgetary constraints. While this may limit major investments in security systems and personnel, less costly improvements or innovations might be worth considering. In this report, we will discuss four advances that may be valuable not only in hospital security, but in other industries as well. One of them, a smoke filter, was originally developed for the hotel industry. Another, a drug detection device, may replace the use of undercover agents or drug-sniffing' dogs in certain circumstances. T

The effectiveness of helmets in reducing all-terrain vehicle injuries and deaths.

This article examines the effectiveness of helmets in reducing all-terrain vehicle (ATV) related deaths and head injuries, conditional on the occurrence of injury producing accidents. A logit regression model is used to analyze cross-section data on ATV-related fatal and nonfatal injuries, and to determine the factors that are associated with deaths and head injuries. The results suggest that, given an accident resulting in injury or death, helmet use reduces the risk of death by about 42%, and could reduce the likelihood that a given nonfatal injury involves the head by about 64%. Other facto

[The snowmobile--only for fun? Registration of snowmobile accidents in Western Finnmark 1988-89].

Driving a snowmobile seems to be associated with a high rate of injury and serious injuries. During the winter season 1988-89, every snowmobile-related injury that had required medical care was registered prospectively in a population of 47,500. 62 persons were injured, mostly men. The majority were young people, and most injuries occurred when the snowmobiles were used for recreation, and at the weekend. 11% of the drivers appeared drunk. 26% were hospitalized. Fractures were the most frequently registered injury, and 16 persons suffered head injuries. A number of other serious injuries were

An assessment of potential injury surveillance data sources in Alaska using an emerging problem: all-terrain vehicle-associated injuries.

Using injuries associated with three-wheeled all-terrain vehicles in Alaska as an example, the existing injury data bases were assessed for usefulness, cost, simplicity, acceptability, flexibility, sensitivity, specificity, representativeness, and timeliness. In this study strengths and weaknesses of existing data for all-terrain vehicles were identified and ways to improve data collection and linkages across data systems are suggested. Based on this evaluation, linked death certificates and medical examiner data provide an excellent mechanism for monitoring vehicle-related fatalities. Informa
