All-terrain vehicle related urethral injuries: An evaluation of the National Trauma Database.

BACKGROUND: U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that from 2018 to 2020 there were 94,700 off-highway vehicle accidents with 92% of those injuries related to all-terrain vehicles (ATV). An estimated 300 deaths were in children less than age 16. There has not been any previous evaluation of urethral injuries resulting from ATV accidents. We sought to define the volume and demographics of ATV-related urethral injuries. METHODS: Data was obtained from the National Trauma Database (NTDB) Trauma Quality Program over a 7-year period (2016-2022). ICD-10 codes were used to identify patien

Pediatric Off-Road Vehicle Injuries: Side-by-Sides Worse for the Upper Extremity.

OBJECTIVES: Side-by-side (SXS) and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are different off-road vehicles (ORVs) but often categorized together in the literature. We hypothesized pediatric upper extremity (UE) fracture patterns and injury severity scores (ISS) differ between ORV types. METHODS: The authors' home-state trauma repository identified 157 pediatric patients aged 0 to 17 years with UE fractures after ORV accidents during 2011-2021. ORV injuries, fracture type, and procedures were identified using International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision and 10th Revision coding followed by manua

Pediatric Upper Extremity Trauma Secondary to All-terrain Vehicle Use.

All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) have become popular with respect to recreational activities. Multiple orthopaedic and pediatric organizations currently recommend limiting use of ATVs to older age groups of children with supervision. These recommendations have not generally been adhered to, resulting in a disproportionate number of pediatric orthopaedic trauma, specifically of the upper extremities. A retrospective review of patients 18-years-old and younger who presented to a single, Level I Trauma Center with ATV-related upper extremity trauma between 1996 and 2006 was undertaken to determine the

Parents' Risk Acceptance and Attitudes Toward the Use of Quad Bikes by Children and Young People in Sweden.

HIGHLIGHTS: Parents did not see themselves as role models for children regarding use of quad bikes. Parents seemed to misjudge their children's maturity and capabilities. Risk acceptance was a common issue, due to risk normalization. There is a need for an age limit for drivers of adult-size quad bikes. ABSTRACT: When seeking to explain the many accidents involving children on quad bikes, it is critical to understand the norms and risk perceptions of their parents, because parents are responsible for their children's safety. This study explored attitudes and behavior among parents of rural ch

Important Advances in Pediatric Injury Prevention.

In children, injuries are the leading cause of death, a major source of disability, and the number one cause of death for children after the first year of life. The principles of injury prevention include surveillance, coalitions, communication, interventions, and evaluation. This article discusses a number of common pediatric injuries and their prevention strategies. This review article addresses key components of injury prevention and specifically addresses the following injuries: motor vehicle crashes (with a section on teen driver crashes, sleep-related injury, and death), poisoning, all-t

The impact of helmet use on neurosurgical care and outcomes after pediatric all-terrain vehicle and dirt bike crashes: a 10-year single-center experience.

OBJECTIVE: All-terrain vehicle (ATV) and dirt bike crashes frequently result in traumatic brain injury. The authors performed a retrospective study to evaluate the role of helmets in the neurosurgical outcomes of pediatric patients involved in ATV and dirt bike crashes who were treated at their institution during the last decade. METHODS: The authors analyzed data on all pediatric patients involved in ATV or dirt bike crashes who were evaluated at a single regional level I pediatric trauma center between 2010 and 2019. Patients were excluded if the crash occurred in a competition (n = 70) or

Pediatric road traffic injuries in Qatar: Evidence for a developmental stage approach to road safety.

Road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death in Qatar but their epidemiology in children has not been fully described. This paper will describe the epidemiology of pediatric road traffic injuries (pRTIs) in Qatar, in order to understand the relationships among risk factors, mechanisms of injury, use of safety equipment, and according to child developmental stages. The primary sample for this study was drawn from all pRTIs (0-18 years) from January 2010 to December 2012-motor vehicle occupants, passengers and drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, and all-terrain vehicle (ATV) d

Recreational off-highway vehicle crashes resulting in victims being treated at a regional trauma center: mechanisms and contributing factors.

BACKGROUND: Recreational off-highway vehicles (ROVs) have become increasingly popular in recent years; however, crash epidemiology is not well described. ROVs travel at least 30 mph, and unlike all-terrain vehicles, have a rollover protective structure (ROPS) and seat belts or a harness system for occupants. This study's objective was to evaluate the demographics, mechanisms, injuries, and associated risk factors of ROV crashes. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed for patients of all ages with ROV-related injuries presenting to a Level 1 trauma center from 2004 to 2017. Cases

Analysis of factors affecting injury severity for riders or occupants of all-terrain vehicles and golf carts involved in police-reported crashes.

In recent years, the popularity of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) in the United States (US) has increased, and the number of ATV driver and passenger deaths have also increased substantially in the last few decades. Riders or occupants of ATVs as well as golf carts are particularly vulnerable to injury, not only due to the lack of protection and safety equipment offered by their vehicles, but also the propensity for ejection in the event of a crash. Given the vulnerability of these road users, it's critical to understand factors which may affect injury severity to plan effective countermeasures a

All-terrain vehicle serious injuries and death in children and youth: A national survey of Canadian paediatricians.

BACKGROUND: All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) are a leading cause of serious injury in children and youth. Certain Canadian regions have implemented legislation to promote safety, including age restrictions, mandatory training and helmet use. Jurisdictions with more stringent ATV safety legislation have been shown to have reduced injury rates in the short term. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the burden of ATV-related serious injury and death in Canada and to identify Canadian physicians' knowledge of ATV-related legislation, safety and health promotion practices. METHODS: A one-time survey was distribute

The Impact of a Statewide Coalition to Decrease Pediatric All-Terrain Vehicle Injuries.

Children lack the cognitive judgment and motor skills to safely operate all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) in all situations. The Trauma Team clinicians at Nemours Children's Health System/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children (N/AIDHC) were concerned about the severity of injuries sustained by children when they were either the driver or a passenger on an ATV. Although this subset of children within the trauma registry did not account for a high volume of trauma patients, these children sustained a higher proportion of severe injuries. In 2012, the Trauma Team at N/AIDHC partnered with Nemours Heal

All-Terrain Vehicle Injury in Children and Youth: Examining Current Knowledge and Future Needs.

BACKGROUND: All-terrain vehicle (ATV)-related injuries remain a large public health problem in the United States and disproportionately affect American youth. Although children account for only 14-18% of ATV riders, they comprise 37-57% of those injured in ATV-related accidents. Since the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission began collecting data in 1982, 23% of ATV-related deaths have occurred in children. OBJECTIVE: With this review, we outline the major risk factors for injuries among young ATV riders in the United States and suggest research-based interventions to successfully modify s
