ATV deaths among older adults in West Virginia: evidence suggesting that "60 is the new 40!".

OBJECTIVES: Describe the epidemiology of all-terrain vehicle (ATV) deaths among persons > or =65 years of age in West Virginia from 1999-2007. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a review of death certificates identifying ATV fatalities from ICD-10 diagnostic codes V86.0, V86.1, V86.3, V86.5, V86.6, and V86.9. RESULTS: ATV deaths increased 155% from 11% during 1985-1998 to 28% during 1999-2007. Injuries to the upper and lower trunk (62%) were the most common injuries, followed by head and neck injuries (28%). Fatality rates increased substantially from 0.37 deaths per 100,000 in 1990 to 2.14

Cost effectiveness of wearing head protection on all-terrain vehicles.

The use of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) has increased in the United States and elsewhere over the last three decades, along with an increased frequency of incidents resulting in serious injuries, among which have been head injuries. ATVs are designed for motorized off-highway work and recreation, can weigh up to 600 lbs (272 kg), and may reach speeds as high as 75 mph (120 km/h). ATV crashes, including collisions and overturns, were responsible for 8104 fatalities from 1982 to 2006. One third of those killed were youth under 16 years of age. Helmets may reduce risk of death by 42% and nonfatal

All-terrain vehicle accidents at a level II trauma center in Indiana: an 8-year retrospective review.

This study profiles the all-terrain vehicle (ATV) accident victims who were admitted at a level II trauma center. We retrospectively reviewed the trauma registry data for 111 patients who were admitted to the Parkview Hospital Level II Trauma Center following ATV crashes between January 1996 and June 2003. Forty-four percent of the patients were < or =16 years of age, and the average age overall was 22.49 years. Most of the 111 victims were men, and only 18.9% of those injured were wearing helmets. Although they only make up 14% of the driver population, children <16 years of age account for a

Risk and preventive factors for fatalities in All-terrain Vehicle Accidents in New Zealand.

All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) have been used in agriculture for a few decades now. Yet despite their invaluable contribution to the productivity of the agricultural industry they are associated with a large number of accidents, many of which result in a severe or fatal outcome. The main objective of this study was to identify the risk factors for ATV-related fatal injuries in order to support the design of effective interventions. Using data held by the Department of Labour, the current study analysed 355 cases of serious harm accidents associated with ATVs including 45 fatalities. The findings

All-terrain vehicle trauma in the elderly: an analysis of a national database.

The elderly are a growing proportion of all-terrain (ATV) drivers. The purpose of this study was to determine if the outcomes of geriatric ATV trauma victims are different from those of their younger counterparts and if age is an independent predictor of mortality. ATV trauma cases in the United States reported to the National Trauma Data Bank between 1989 and 2003 comprised the study population. A logistic regression model was constructed with mortality as the outcome and age as the primary covariate of interest. A total of 6308 ATV-related traumas were reported to the National Trauma Data Ba

Neuromusculoskeletal disorders in the neck and upper extremities among drivers of all-terrain vehicles--a case series.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether professional drivers of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) with neck pain have a different array of neuromusculoskeletal disorders in the neck and upper extremities than a referent group with neck pain from the general population. It is hypothesized that exposure to shock-type vibration and unfavorable working postures in ATVs have the capacity to cause peripheral nervous lesions. METHODS: This study was based on a case series analyzed according to a case-case comparison design. The study population consisted of 60 male subjects, inclu

Whole-body vibration exposure and non-neutral neck postures during occupational use of all-terrain vehicles.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to characterize whole-body vibration (WBV) exposure from various all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) like snowgroomers, snowmobiles and forwarders, and to investigate how frequently the drivers' cervical spine is positioned in a non-neutral rotational position during operation. METHODS: Field measurements of WBV were measured according to the international standard ISO 2631-1 in 19 ATVs. Simultaneous recordings of frequency and duration of rotational neck movements exceeding 15 degrees were achieved through an observational method, PEOflex. RESULTS: The sum

All-terrain vehicle and bicycle crashes in children: epidemiology and comparison of injury severity.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Despite statements by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) against the use of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) by children under the age of 16 years, nearly half of ATV-related injuries and over 35% of all ATV-related deaths continue to occur in this age group. Because ATV and bicycle crashes have been associated with serious injury in children, the authors compared the demographics, mechanism of injury, injury severity, and outcome of children with ATV- and bicycle-related injuries. Further, the authors sought to identify

Risk factors for all-terrain vehicle injuries: a national case-control study.

A case-control study design was used to determine and quantify all-terrain vehicle (ATV) risk factors. The analysis was based on the results of two national probability surveys conducted in 1997: a survey of injured ATV drivers treated in hospital emergency departments and a survey of the general population of ATV users. Cases were drawn from the injury survey; controls (ATV drivers who had not been injured) were drawn from the user survey. Risk factors were quantified by means of a binary logistic regression analysis. After adjustment for covariates, injury risks were systematically related t

Adolescent all-terrain vehicle deaths in West Virginia, 1990-1998.

West Virginia had the third highest number of ATV-related deaths and the highest death rate among all states from 1990-98. Adolescents were identified as a particularly high-risk ATV user group. Fatality data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission indicated that one-quarter (25 of 101) of the state's ATV-related deaths occurred among children 16 and younger. Only one victim was wearing a helmet at the time of their fatal crash and nearly 70% of the victims were males. The average years of potential life lost was 64.2. WV's adolescent death rate of 0.67 per 100,000 was 5 times higher

The characteristics and use patterns of all-terrain vehicle drivers in the United States.

The consent decrees between the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and the major distributors of all-terrain vehicles (ATV), which were designed to address ATV-related injuries and deaths, expired in April, 1998. While national estimates of nonfatal and fatal injuries involving ATVs declined after the consent decrees went into effect 10 years ago, the injury estimates have stabilized in recent years. To gain a better understanding of current ATV use patterns, the CPSC sponsored a national probability survey of ATV drivers in the fall of 1997. The survey was designed to collect information a

The continuing problem of all-terrain vehicle injuries in children.

BACKGROUND: After the introduction of the all-terrain vehicle (ATV) in the United States in 1971, deaths and injuries in both adults and children rose dramatically. In 1988, the Consumer's Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and all manufacturers of ATVs signed legally binding "Consent Decrees," designed to decrease the number of ATV-related deaths and injuries, especially in children. METHODS: This report reviews retrospectively the mechanism of injury as well as the injuries in 51 children caused by ATV crashes during a 5-year period after the signing of the decrees. RESULTS: Data included ag
