Hand-arm vibration was measured on the handlebars of terrain vehicles (N = 36) and a postal inquiry was made among N = 2705 reindeer herders (snowmobile drivers). Since many subjects had also used other vibrating tools the snowmobile group proper (N = 334) was established. In the whole group 19% of the subjects reported having experienced white finger attacks and 48% numbness of the hands. The frequency-weighted acceleration of snowmobile vibration was 3.5 m/s2, and risk evaluation using the ISO 5349 standard predicted the prevalence of white finger well in the snowmobile group proper. The vib

All-terrain vehicles (ATV) are designed for off-the-road occupational or recreational use. As their popularity has been increasing steadily, information has been accumulating on the morbidity and mortality associated with their use. The attributes of the ATV that make it attractive for recreation and sport are the reasons for much of its danger. Thus, horsepower, speed and ability to travel on rough and uncertain terrain are causal factors for accidents. The poor judgment and risk-taking of many of the young and immature drivers contribute to the great danger. 61 admissions due to ATV accident

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission initiated a formal regulatory proceeding in 1985 to evaluate the hazards associated with all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and to consider a range of regulatory alternatives. In December 1987, the government and ATV industry filed preliminary consent decrees in U.S. District Court that contained provisions intended to satisfy the Commission's concerns about ATVs. Final consent decrees were approved by the Court in April 1988. This study examines the effectiveness of the consent decrees and concomitant publicity in reducing ATV-related injuries by evaluatin

The aim of this study was to ascertain the use of four-wheeled all-terrain vehicles in Finland and estimate the safety in driving a four-wheeler. According to the importers there are about 3,000 four-wheelers in use in Finland. A questionnaire was sent to the owners of four-wheelers (n = 185), in which questions were asked about their use, protection used when driving, accidents that had occurred and suggestions for developing four-wheelers. One hundred three answers (response rate 56%) were received. The respondents reported minor injuries (15%) and dangerous situations: the four-wheeler had

This article examines the effectiveness of helmets in reducing all-terrain vehicle (ATV) related deaths and head injuries, conditional on the occurrence of injury producing accidents. A logit regression model is used to analyze cross-section data on ATV-related fatal and nonfatal injuries, and to determine the factors that are associated with deaths and head injuries. The results suggest that, given an accident resulting in injury or death, helmet use reduces the risk of death by about 42%, and could reduce the likelihood that a given nonfatal injury involves the head by about 64%. Other facto

Twelve cases of spinal cord injury (SCI) resulting from recreational off-road vehicle (ORV) accidents seen during a three-year period at a spinal cord injury center were analyzed using structured interviews and record reviews. Seven accidents involved three-wheel all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), one involved a four-wheel ATV, and four involved two-wheel trailbikes. The analysis of accident victim characteristics showed that all age groups are at risk, and that most victims were young adult men vehicle drivers with experience and wearing helmets. Spinal injury levels were cervical, three; thoracic,

There is increasing concern over the unregulated use of recreational off-road motor vehicles. A review of 207 patients admitted to a tertiary care hospital over a 5-year period, as well as deaths due to use of recreational vehicles, elicited the following information. Recreational accidents predominantly involved men in their mid-twenties. Children younger than 16 years were more frequently involved in all-terrain vehicle (ATV) or dirt-bike accidents and constituted more than one-third of the total. There was a ninefold increase in ATV accidents over the study period, so that by 1985 ATVs were

From January 1983 through December 1984, twenty deaths and at least 534 injuries in Alaska were associated with three-wheeled, all-terrain vehicles. Age at death ranged from 12 to 53 years; 15 deaths (75%) were in the 15- to 34-year age group. Of the 20 fatalities, 12 (60%) might have been prevented had the riders been wearing a helmet. Alcohol use was detected or highly suspected as the major contributing cause of the fatal crash for 12 of 15 drivers and three of five female passengers. Potential risk factors for injuries associated with all-terrain vehicles include alcohol use, failure to us
