During the 14-year period from 1990-2003, West Virginia experienced 220 deaths related to All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs). Death rates in West Virginia however, were significantly higher than the national rate or those of any of the its five surrounding states. About 25% of the West Virginia deaths occurred in children less than 18 years of age. Ninety-five percent of the victims were not wearing helmets and 15% were passengers. Nearly one-third of the ATV crashes occurred on public roads, streets, and highways--surfaces on which ATVs are not designed nor recommended to be used. The cost of ATV-re

OBJECTIVE: To describe the types of injuries sustained by children who ride all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), to estimate the hospital charges associated with these injuries, and to determine adherence to existing rules and regulations governing ATV use.
METHODS: Analysis of statewide hospital admissions (1992-1996) and emergency department (ED) visits (1996) in Utah. All patients who were younger than 16 years and had an external cause of injury code for ATV use were included.
RESULTS: In 1996, 268 ED visits by children involved an ATV. Boys were twice as commonly injured as girls (male:female r

BACKGROUND: After the introduction of the all-terrain vehicle (ATV) in the United States in 1971, deaths and injuries in both adults and children rose dramatically. In 1988, the Consumer's Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and all manufacturers of ATVs signed legally binding "Consent Decrees," designed to decrease the number of ATV-related deaths and injuries, especially in children.
METHODS: This report reviews retrospectively the mechanism of injury as well as the injuries in 51 children caused by ATV crashes during a 5-year period after the signing of the decrees.
RESULTS: Data included ag

All-terrain vehicle (ATV) riding has become very popular over the past decade. Several reports have shown that ATV riding can cause injury. Poor machine design, rider inexperience, inappropriate riding, carrying passengers, alcohol consumption, and use of ATVs by children have been identified as causes of injury. Three- and four-wheel ATVs demand considerable rider skill and caution, requirements which users may not appreciate. Physicians have an important role in recording and reporting ATV-related health hazards.

From January 1983 through December 1984, twenty deaths and at least 534 injuries in Alaska were associated with three-wheeled, all-terrain vehicles. Age at death ranged from 12 to 53 years; 15 deaths (75%) were in the 15- to 34-year age group. Of the 20 fatalities, 12 (60%) might have been prevented had the riders been wearing a helmet. Alcohol use was detected or highly suspected as the major contributing cause of the fatal crash for 12 of 15 drivers and three of five female passengers. Potential risk factors for injuries associated with all-terrain vehicles include alcohol use, failure to us
