Motorized Two-Wheeled Vehicles Contribute Disproportionately to the Increase in Pandemic-Period Road Traffic Fatalities in New York State.

Background: New York State, like many other states, experienced a significant increase in road traffic deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic that is not fully understood. Our earlier work using the Safe System framework suggests a shift in the distribution of vehicle types that may have contributed to this phenomenon. Methods: To further investigate this, variables from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) were mapped onto the Safe System framework and used to examine factors associated with motorized two- and three-wheeled vehicle deaths. Two time periods were examined: pre-pandemic (1

The Alarming Surge of Driving Under the Influence-Related Motor Vehicle Crashes.

INTRODUCTION: The use of alcohol and illicit substances is increasing in the United States. However, it is not clear what proportion of motor vehicle crashes (MVCs) are related to driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol or drugs. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and trends of positive drug and alcohol tests among drivers of MVCs admitted to trauma centers across the United States over the years. METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of the American College of Surgeons-Trauma Quality Improvement Program database over 4 years (2017-2020). Using International Classific

Frequency-dependent tolerance to aircraft disturbance drastically alters predicted impact on shorebirds.

Anthropogenic disturbance of wildlife is increasing globally. Generalizing impacts of disturbance to novel situations is challenging, as the tolerance of animals to human activities varies with disturbance frequency (e.g. due to habituation). Few studies have quantified frequency-dependent tolerance, let alone determined how it affects predictions of disturbance impacts when these are extrapolated over large areas. In a comparative study across a gradient of air traffic intensities, we show that birds nearly always fled (80%) if aircraft were rare, while birds rarely responded (7%) if traffic

Influence of conventional driving habits on takeover performance in joystick-controlled autonomous vehicles: A low-speed field experiment.

Takeover is a critical factor in the safety of autonomous driving. Takeover refers to the action of a human driver assuming control of an autonomous vehicle from its automated driving system. This can occur when the vehicle encounters a situation it cannot handle, when the system requests the driver to take control, or when the driver chooses to intervene for safety or other reasons. This study explored how traditional steering-wheel driving habits affect takeover performance in joystick-controlled autonomous vehicles. We conducted an experiment using a joystick-controlled Dongfeng Sharing-VAN

Same-Sex Relationships and Criminal Behavior: A Total Population Study in The Netherlands.

Sexual minority groups experience elevated risk across a range of adverse outcomes. Previous studies from the USA showed that these risks include contact with the criminal justice system for sexual minority females but not for males. This study examined whether this relationship between sexual minority status and criminal behavior was also found in a more secular country like the Netherlands with more progressive attitudes toward sexual minorities. Furthermore, the study aimed to examine whether this relationship applied to various types of crime and could be explained by unmeasured familial f

Research on finite element simulation and full-scale-vehicle crash test of B750HL bridge barrier.

How to raise the bridge barrier with a concrete base height of only 51 cm to SS level of protection is not yet studied. In order to effectively retrofit an existing concrete barrier design to meet new crash testing criteria, the structural dimensions and concrete strength of the existing bridge barrier were investigated, and finite element simulation analysis was carried out, and simulation suggested the existing barrier was insufficient. Based on the structural dimension design principles of bridge barriers, the existing structure of bridge barrier was designed after adding lightweight and hi

Brain signatures of catastrophic events: Emotion, salience, and cognitive control.

Anticipatory brain activity makes it possible to predict the occurrence of expected situations. However, events such as traffic accidents are statistically unpredictable and can generate catastrophic consequences. This study investigates the brain activity and effective connectivity associated with anticipating and processing such unexpected, unavoidable accidents. We asked 161 participants to ride a motorcycle simulator while recording their electroencephalographic activity. Of these, 90 participants experienced at least one accident while driving. We conducted both within-subjects and betwee

Testing nonlinearity of heavy-tailed time series.

A test statistic for nonlinearity of a given heavy-tailed time series process is constructed, based on the sub-sample stability of Gini-based sample autocorrelations. The finite-sample performance of the proposed test is evaluated in a Monte Carlo study and compared to a similar test based on the sub-sample stability of a heavy-tailed analogue of the conventional sample autocorrelation function. In terms of size and power properties, the quality of our test outperforms a nonlinearity test for heavy-tailed time series processes proposed by [S.I. Resnick and E. Van den Berg, A test for nonlinear

Descriptive analysis of road traffic crashes encountered by Tanzanian motorcycle taxi drivers trained in first aid.

INTRODUCTION: In Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, death from road traffic crashes (RTC) occurs at roughly double the global rate. In this study, we sought to understand the locations and types of vehicles involved in RTC in Dar es Salaam encountered by a cohort of motorcycle taxi drivers previously trained in first aid. METHODS: This was a quasi-non-randomized interventional study, cohort subtype, with three-month follow-up. Some 186 motorcycle taxi drivers were selected by convenience sampling from 16 heavily populated, central wards and trained in a basic hemorrhage control course. Participants rep

Nanomaterials for Modified Asphalt and Their Effects on Viscosity Characteristics: A Comprehensive Review.

The application of nanomaterials as modifiers in the field of asphalt is increasingly widespread, and this paper aims to systematically review research on the impact of nanomaterials on asphalt viscosity. The results find that nanomaterials tend to increase asphalt's viscosity, enhancing its resistance to high-temperature rutting and low-temperature cracking. Zero-dimension nanomaterials firmly adhere to the asphalt surface, augmenting non-bonding interactions through van der Waals forces and engaging in chemical reactions to form a spatial network structure. One-dimensional nanomaterials inte
