Fine-resolution profile-scale data to depict the impact of tillage treatment and machine traffic on agricultural soil structure and hydrologic properties.

This data article provides high spatial resolution (1 cm) datasets and related figures of the penetrometer resistance (PR) and soil bulk density (BD) data of nine agricultural 50 × 160 cm soil profiles exposed to three tillage treatments and including a wheel track. Soil treatments are moldboard plowing (MP), deep loosening (DL), and minimum tillage (MT). It also provides bulk density data, soil moisture content at various suctions and the parameters of van Genuchten's model for 27 soil cores, and saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) of 49 soil cores. Both sample sets were sampled to cover th

Bicycle Data-Driven Application Framework: A Dutch Case Study on Machine Learning-Based Bicycle Delay Estimation at Signalized Intersections Using Nationwide Sparse GPS Data.

Data-driven approaches are helpful for quantitative justification and performance evaluation. The Netherlands has made notable strides in establishing a national protocol for bicycle traffic counting and collecting GPS cycling data through initiatives such as the Talking Bikes program. This article addresses the need for a generic framework to harness cycling data and extract relevant insights. Specifically, it focuses on the application of estimating average bicycle delays at signalized intersections, as this is an essential variable in assessing the performance of the transportation system.

Case report: Traumatic hemorrhagic cervical myelopathy in a dog.

A 1.5-year-old female entire French bulldog was referred for neurological evaluation, further diagnostic tests, and treatment 24 h after a road traffic accident. Initial emergency treatment, diagnostic tests, and stabilization had been performed by the referring veterinarian. Neurological examination revealed severe spastic non-ambulatory tetraparesis and was consistent with a C1-5 myelopathy. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study revealed an irregular to elongated ovoid intramedullary lesion centered over the body of C2. The lesion showed marked signal heterogeneity with a central T2W and

The Impacts of Car-Free Days and Events on the Environment and Human Health.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this paper, we seek to elucidate the impact of car-free days and events on human health. Car-free days and events are often designed to alleviate the impact of transportation-related air pollution, noise, physical inactivity, traffic congestion, or other detrimental externalities of private motor vehicle travel. We reviewed existing peer-reviewed and gray literature to understand the variety of potential public health impacts that have been measured as a result of car-free days or events and associated changes in environmental exposures and lifestyles. RECENT FINDINGS: T

Significance of tractor-trailer impacts to the rear of light vehicles.

OBJECTIVE: This study determined the type of striking vehicle or object associated with serious injury to at least 1 occupant in the vehicle struck in the rear. METHOD: The 1990-2015 NASS-CDS was analyzed for light vehicles involved in rear crashes. The type of vehicle struck in the rear resulting in serious injury to at least 1 occupant was determined. Rear impacts were identified with GAD1 = B without rollover (rollover ≤ 0). Vehicles with serious to maximum injury were identified as VAIS 3 to 6 (VAIS 3+). The type of striking vehicle or object was determined for the rear impacts causing se

Crash characteristics and injury risk of adult car occupants in near-side impacts.

OBJECTIVE: In the US, 27% of car occupant fatalities occur in side-impacts. Near-side impacts cause more serious injuries than far-side impacts. Car occupant safety overall has improved, but rear-seat occupant protection lags behind front-seat protection. The current study had two aims: first, to describe crash characteristics and injury outcomes for near-side rear-seated restrained occupants before and after side-impact regulations (FMVSS-214) were mandated; and secondly, to estimate injury risks in near-side impact depending on seating position, delta-v, and other predictors. METHODS: The N

Analysis of driver-injury severity: a comparison between speeding and non-speeding driving crash accounting for temporal and unobserved effects.

This paper aims to investigate the differences between temporal stability of factors influencing driver-injury severities in crashes involving speeding and non-speeding driving using a six-year (2012-2017) crash data in Thailand. With two possible driver injury severity outcomes (no/minor and severe/fatal), random parameter binary logit models, that allow for heterogeneity in means and variances, were estimated to fully account for unobserved heterogeneities (i.e., allow crash-level factors to vary across crashes and to influence random parameter distribution). While most factors were unstable

Predicting the Degree of Distracted Driving Based on fNIRS Functional Connectivity: A Pilot Study.

Distracted driving is one of the main causes of traffic accidents. By predicting the attentional state of drivers, it is possible to prevent distractions and promote safe driving. In this study, we developed a model that could predict the degree of distracted driving based on brain activity. Changes in oxyhemoglobin concentrations were measured in drivers while driving a real car using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). A regression model was constructed for each participant using functional connectivity as an explanatory variable and brake reaction time to random beeps while drivi

Source apportionment of ambient PM10 collected at three sites in an urban-industrial area with multi-time resolution factor analyses.

Chemical speciation data for PM10, collected for annual trend analyses of health-relevant species, at three receptor sites in a highly industrialized area (IJmond) in the Netherlands were used in a multi-time resolution receptor model (ME-2) to identify the PM10 sources in this area. Despite the available data not being optimized for receptor modelling, five-factor solutions were obtained for all sites based on independent PMF analysis on PM10 data from the three sites (IJM, WAZ and BEV). Four factors were common to all three sites: nitrate-sulphate (average percentage contributions to PM10: I

Estimation of Water Depth on Road Surfaces Using Accelerometric Signals.

The paper presents an experimental study conducted to evaluate the feasibility of using accelerometers as an indirect means to estimate water depths on road surfaces. It makes use of the vibration of the vehicle's wheel arch due to water droplets projected by a tire rolling on a wet road surface. A trailer equipped with a wheel and towed by a van was used. The test setups to spread water on the road surface and before the test wheel, measure the water depth and visualize the water spray are described. The test program, conducted on a test track closed to the traffic, includes three surfaces an

Evaluation and Improvement of the Current CRCP Pavement Design Method.

Continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) is a representative type of concrete pavement constructed with continuous steel bars without intermediate transverse expansions. With reference to pavement conditions, CRCP is an exceptional type of concrete pavement according to the Highway Pavement Condition Index (HPCI) and International Roughness Index (IRI). The two main design methods for CRCP are AASHTO 86/93 and the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG). Because of limitations of the AASHTO 86/93 design method, the MEPDG method is more reliable. While incorporating the inte

SARM1 Depletion Slows Axon Degeneration in a CNS Model of Neurotropic Viral Infection.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a neurotropic flavivirus recently linked to congenital ZIKV syndrome in children and encephalitis and Guillain-Barré syndrome in adults. Neurotropic viruses often use axons to traffic to neuronal or glial cell somas where they either remain latent or replicate and proceed to infect new cells. Consequently, it has been suggested that axon degeneration could represent an evolutionarily conserved mechanism to limit viral spread. Whilst it is not known if ZIKV transits in axons, we previously reported that ZIKV infection of glial cells in a murine spinal cord-derived cell cult

Simultaneous bilateral floating knee: A case report.

BACKGROUND: The phrase "floating knee is a flail knee joint," referring to ipsilateral femoral and tibial fractures, was first used by Blake and McBryde in 1975. This condition is often caused by a high-energy trauma with often extensive injury to the soft tissues, and is accompanied by life-threatening systemic complications, including head, chest or abdominal injuries and a high incidence of fat embolism. Floating knee is a severe and uncommon injury pattern. CASE SUMMARY: A 27-year-old man sustained multiple injuries when the electric motorcycle he was riding was hit by a van. His injuries
