Identifying mental health outcomes and evidence-based psychological interventions for supporting pediatric gunshot wound patients: A systematic review and proposed conceptual model.

BACKGROUND: Accidental and assault gunshot wounds (GSWs) are the second leading cause of injury in the United States for youth ages 1- to 17-years-old, resulting in significant negative effects on pediatric patients' mental health functioning. Despite the critical implications of GSWs, there has yet to be a systematic review synthesizing trends in mental health outcomes for pediatric patients; a gap the present review fills. Additionally, this review identifies evidence-based psychological interventions shown to be effective in the treatment of subclinical symptoms of psychological disorders i

Naturalistic driving study on the impact of an aftermarket blind spot monitoring system on the driver's behaviour of heavy goods vehicles and buses on reducing conflicts with pedestrians and cyclists.

The risk being severely or fatally injured in crashes with heavy goods vehicle and buses is much higher compared to other vehicles. Especially vulnerable road users such as pedestrian and cyclists are at high risk. In the European Union 4600 pedestrian and more than 2000 cyclists were killed in 2019. 18% of the fatalities were counted in crashes with heavy goods vehicles or buses. Blind spot situations and driver inattention or distraction are causing and contributing crash factors. Driver assistance systems are intended to support drivers and might have a positive effect on the crash avoidanc

Spinal injury rates and specific causation in motor vehicle collisions.

Motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) are a leading cause of acute spinal injuries. Chronic spinal pathologies are common in the population. Thus, determining the incidence of different types of spinal injuries due to MVCs and understanding biomechanical mechanism of these injuries is important for distinguishing acute injuries from chronic degenerative disease. This paper describes methods for determining causation of spinal pathologies from MVCs based on rates of injury and analysis of the biomechanics require to produce these injuries. Rates of spinal injuries in MVCs were determined using two di

Injury patterns within clusters of seriously injured occupants comparing real-world crashes in the United States and the European Union.

OBJECTIVE: Crashworthiness assessments in the United States (U.S.) and the European Union (EU) include a large number of safety regulations and consumer testing programs. However, safety standards and testing procedures differ between the two regions. Not much research has been done in relation to this topic, because it has always been assumed that the accident environments in the U.S. and EU are not comparable. The objective of this study is to compare how vehicle occupants are severely injured in motor vehicle collisions in the U.S. and the EU by applying unsupervised learning to accident da

A skewed logistic model of two-unit bicycle-vehicle hit-and-run crashes.

OBJECTIVE: Hit-and-run behavior in crashes is a severe offense worldwide because the identification and emergency rescue of any injured road user is delayed. A motorist's run from the crash scene is especially serious for a cyclist who would be more prone to be physically injured in a bicycle-vehicle (BV) crash. The objective of this paper is to explore potential risk factors that contribute to the hit-and-run (HR) behavior of a driver after a two-unit BV collision. METHODS: The data used in this study are extracted from traffic crash records in the city of Durham, North Carolina in 2007-2014

Temporal stability of the factors related to the severity of drivers' injuries in rear-end collisions.

Most of the previous studies that investigated the factors increasing the severity of rear-end collisions were based on analyzing collision reports from multiple years and combining them into a single dataset for analysis. Analyzing pooled data from multiple years carries the risk of introducing aggregation bias in the analysis. Those aggregated models might be structurally unstable, and the significance of the risk factors identified using those aggregated models might change over time due to the ongoing changes in vehicle technologies, law-enforcement technologies, and drivers' attitudes. Th

Prevalence and pattern of lower extremity injuries due to road traffic crashes in Fako Division, Cameroon.

INTRODUCTION: Low and middle income countries are disproportionately affected with road traffic injuries and the lower extremity is one of the most affected anatomical body parts. There exist very limited data on the pattern of lower extremity injuries in the Cameroon especially in the South West Region. We therefore, hypothesized that lower limb injuries are common in road traffic crashes and motorized two wheelers are the commonest cause. METHODS: This was a hospital based prospective, cross sectional study. It involved four hospitals (Limbe and Buea Regional Hospitals, Baptist hospital Mut

Association between pre- and intraorbital soft tissue volumes and the risk of orbital blowout fractures using CT-based volumetric measurements.

Orbital blowout fractures result from trauma which breaks the bony orbital wall while sparing the rim. Previous research into fracture mechanism has focused on bony anatomy. This study evaluates the role of preorbital and intraorbital soft tissue volume in fracture risk. A retrospective case-control study was conducted on 51 cases of adults with unilateral orbital blowout fracture, matched to 51 controls who had experienced orbital trauma by comparable mechanisms without sustaining a fracture. Axial Computed Tomography (CT) images with orbital fine cuts were assessed on a 3D post-processing wo
