Craniofacial Injuries Associated With Micromobility Vehicles: A Retrospective Analysis Using the NEISS Database (2014-2023).

This retrospective analysis examines craniofacial injuries resulting from micromobility vehicle use based on National Electronic Injury Surveillance System data from 2014 to 2023. The study analyzed injury patterns from electric scooters, hoverboards, and e-bikes across ~100 US hospital emergency departments. Among 308,068 recorded craniofacial injuries, a significant gender disparity emerged with males comprising 69.4% of cases versus 30.6% for females. Injury rates peaked in males aged 20 to 29 and females aged 0 to 9. Males experienced injuries at 2.4 times the female rate. Powered and unsp

Patterns of Injuries in Danish Motorcyclists Requiring Air Ambulance Activation: A 5-Year Review.

OBJECTIVE: Powered 2-wheeler (PTW) riders are a highly vulnerable road-user group who frequently require helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) for critical care and transport. This study aimed to describe the population of injured PTW riders attended by the Danish Air Ambulance and compare them with the wider Danish HEMS trauma population. METHODS: This was a retrospective population-based study of Danish HEMS missions from January 1, 2018, to December 31, 2023, including all primary missions involving a PTW patient. Data were collected from the Danish HEMS database on patient demograp

Sickness absence and disability pension after road traffic accidents, a nationwide register-based study comparing different road user groups with matched references.

BACKGROUND: Being injured in a road traffic accident may affect individuals' functional ability and in turn lead to sickness absence (SA) and disability pension (DP). Knowledge regarding long-term consequences in terms of SA and DP following a road traffic accident is lacking, especially comparing different groups of road users and compared to the general population. The aim was to estimate excess diagnosis-specific SA and DP among individuals of different road user groups injured in a road traffic accident compared to matched references without such injury. METHODS: A nationwide register-bas

Is distraction on the road associated with maladaptive mobile phone use? A systematic review.

Maladaptive Mobile Phone Use (MMPU) (also known as Smartphone Addiction, Nomophobia, Fear of Missing Out, or Problematic Mobile Phone Use) is a growing mental health problem. However, the health and safety consequences of MMPU remain unexplored in many real-life contexts. A potential setting where MMPU may have some negative repercussions is on the road. It is well established that road users (e.g., drivers, motorcyclists, pedestrians, and cyclists) increasingly injure themselves or others due to distractions such as phone use while on the road. Emerging research suggests that MMPU is a possib

The Impact of Seat Belt Use in Pregnancy on Injuries and Outcomes After Motor Vehicle Collisions.

BACKGROUND: Seat belt use during motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) has been shown to alter adults' intra-abdominal injury patterns, although the effect of seat belt use in pregnant women is unclear. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of seat belt use in pregnancy on injuries and outcomes after MVCs. METHODS: Patients injured by MVCs were identified from the National Trauma Data Bank (2007-2014). The exclusion criteria were transfer from an outside hospital, male or unspecified sex, missing restraint data, and nonchildbearing age. Demographics, clinical/injury data, pregnanc

The epidemiology and prehospital care of motorcycle crashes in a sub-Saharan African urban center.

OBJECTIVE: Road traffic crashes (RTCs) are common among motorcyclists in Kigali, Rwanda. The Service d'Aide Medicale Urgente (SAMU), a prehospital ambulance service, responds to many of these crashes. We aimed to describe motorcycle-related RTCs managed by SAMU. METHODS: SAMU clinical data including demographic information, injury characteristics, and management details were analyzed descriptively for all motorcycle crashes occurring between December 2012 and July 2016. RESULTS: Every patient included in this study was injured. These patients all called the ambulance for their injuries after

Comparison of type and severity of major injuries among undertriaged and correctly triaged older patients.

BACKGROUND: Despite the use of prehospital triage algorithms and other trauma scoring methods, a substantial proportion of older patients with life-threatening injuries are undertriaged, increasing the risk of preventable death and disability. STUDY OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study was to describe the injury types, injury severity, and short-term survival outcomes of undertriaged older adults injured in motor vehicle collisions, compared to a group of correctly triaged older adults. METHODS: This secondary analysis of records extracted from the National Automotive Sampling Syst

The epidemiology of urban pediatric neurological trauma: evaluation of, and implications for, injury prevention programs.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the incidence and causes of pediatric head, spinal cord, and peripheral nerve injuries in an urban setting and to assess the implications of these data for injury prevention programs. METHODS: Pediatric deaths and hospital admissions secondary to neurological trauma included in the Northern Manhattan Injury Surveillance System from 1983 to 1992 were linked to census counts to compute incidence rates. Rates before the implementation of a nonspecific injury prevention program were compared with rates after the implementation, and rates for the target population were compa

Unspecified injuries on death certificates: a source of bias in injury research.

Protective gear (for example, helmets and bulletproof vests) shields certain body regions from damaging energy. Failure to specify on death certificates the body region and nature of fatal injuries compromises the utility of mortality data for epidemiologic or prevention research. Of fatally injured California motorcyclists, 41% had no specific injuries listed on their death certificates in 1988. To examine the implications of this problem, the authors abstracted 186 coroner's or medical examiner's reports from four California counties with over 60% nonspecific injuries and one county with few

Impact of acute alcohol intoxication on the severity of injury: a cause-specific analysis of non-fatal trauma.

The impact of alcohol on the severity of injury was studied by using injured patients from an emergency room in Helsinki, Finland. Blood alcohol content was estimated either clinically or with a breath test and then was recorded using a three-grade intoxication code (Ethyl sign). The study population was comprised of 14,995 men aged 15-64 years. The Ethyl sign was positive in 19.7 per cent. Hospitalization was used as an indicator of the severity of injury. Hospitalization was almost as common among sober (9.3 per cent) as among intoxicated patients (9.6 per cent) and the odds of being hospita
