Brachial plexus injuries after personal watercraft accidents have been rarely reported. We present a 38-year-old female who was riding a personal watercraft when she was struck by an ocean wave and ejected backwards. The motor exam demonstrated bilateral upper extremity weakness. Brachial plexus MRI revealed left C4-C5 and C5-C6 nerve root sleeve tears, with possible similar contralateral injuries. The patient was observed for two days without clinical improvement and was sent home with an appointment to the peripheral nerve clinic and evaluation with a physiatrist. She completed six weeks of

INTRODUCTION: A personal watercraft is widely used for recreation on coastlines, rivers, and lakes. This study aimed to identify the spectrum of neurosurgical injuries related to personal watercraft accidents in Puerto Rico.
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed utilizing the University of Puerto Rico neurosurgery database to identify patients who had been consulted to the neurosurgery service from 2005 to 2023 due to a personal watercraft-related neurosurgical injury. For each identified patient, basic demographics, injuries received, Glasgow coma scale score at arrival, American Spin

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol and drug (illicit or prescription) intoxication impairs motor skills, coordination, decision making abilities, hazard perception, and is known to increase the risk of death in coastal environments. Prior coastal safety research has focused largely on the impact of alcohol on drowning, with less research on the influence of drugs and leaving a significant number of other non-drowning fatalities largely excluded, despite being preventable with mitigation of injuries or medical factors.
METHOD: This retrospective cross-sectional study explored the impact of alcohol and drug

Personal watercrafts (otherwise known as Jet Skis or wave runners) possess powerful propelling engines that enable them to reach high velocities. In overcrowded sea shores, especially due to a diversity of human errors (inexperience, underage operator, alcohol-related errors and lack of training), these vessels might cause severe damage to the operator himself, to swimmers in the whereabouts but to the environment as well. We present three fatal victims that were struck and overrun by personal watercrafts used for recreational purposes. One of them had a deep skull trauma resulting from being

INTRODUCTION: Drowning is a leading cause of unintentional death. Rivers are a common location for drowning. Unlike other location-specific prevention efforts (home swimming pools and beaches), little is known about prevention targeting river drowning deaths.
METHODS: A systematic literature review was undertaken using English language papers published between 1980 and 2014, exploring gaps in the literature, with a focus on epidemiology, risk factors and prevention strategies for river drowning.
RESULTS: Twenty-nine papers were deemed relevant to the study design including 21 (72.4%) on epid

PURPOSE: Watercraft-associated trauma (WAT) in children has received little attention so far, despite the potentially severe and debilitating resulting injuries. The aim of this study was to evaluate all cases of major watercraft-associated trauma admitted to the Children's of Alabama during the past 10 years, identify patterns in mechanism and injury, and propose future prevention strategies.
METHODS: We reviewed our (prospective) database for children admitted through our trauma center after major WAT. Charts were abstracted for mechanism, epidemiologic data, injury type and injury severity

INTRODUCTION: The use of motorised watercrafts has been increasing steadily over the past few years, and consequently, also injuries secondary to the use of these watercrafts [1].
METHOD: This is a case presentation and review of literature. We present a case of isolated extraperitoneal rectal perforation secondary to hydrostatic pressure sustained. Both PubMed and Web of Science were searched using the following keywords: rectal perforations; intra-peritoneal; extra-peritoneal; motorised watercraft; and Jet Ski.
RESULTS: We found two similar rectal injuries caused by motorised watercrafts,

OBJECTIVE: This retrospective study analyzed records of boating or other watercraft-related events in Alaska from 1999-2004, where at least one drowning occurred, to identify factors associated with survivors of these same events.
DATA: Records of recreational boating events involving at least one fatality were obtained through the U.S. Coast Guard. Group rescue responses and rescue assistance responses by others outside the parties were categorized and analyzed. We conducted t tests and odds ratios to analyze inter-group differences.
RESULTS: There were 32 immersion events involving 36 fata

BACKGROUND: Over the past decade, visitors to Alaska have spent increasing amounts of time engaged in water-based recreational activities aboard vessels of various sizes. Serious vessel-related injuries to travelers in Alaska involve not only medical care from unfamiliar health care providers and facilities but also entail the loss of vacation time and the need for injured travelers to return to their homes under less than optimal traveling conditions.
METHODS: This study employed a retrospective, case-comparison analysis to identify differences in factors associated with recreational injurie

BACKGROUND: No one has ever reported or investigated the number of people who have been admitted to hospital for a water related incident. The purpose of this paper is to examine, the hospital activity resulting from such incidents including to length of stay, gender, age and cause.
METHODS: The data was extracted from the Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) for episodes with a mention of ICD 10 (V90-94, W15-16, W65-74, X38, X92, Y21) for the years 1997/8 to 2003/4. Population based rates and relative risk were calculated using the most recent Census data for England (2001).
RESULTS: The 6,793

The aim of this study was to investigate the causes and prevention of the 333 boating deaths that occurred in Australia over the period 1992-1998. It involved: assessment of the Coroner's findings; review of witness statements, police reports, autopsy findings, search and rescue reports, weather maps and reports; analysis of forensic and scientific data; assessment of photographic evidence; review of other related information. The data were coded according to a recently developed national data standard. It was found that nearly half of the vessels involved had an insufficient number of persona

A trend of increasing number and severity of injuries associated with use of personal watercraft (PWC) has been noted as the use and popularity of PWC also rises. The rate of injuries secondary to PWC use is greater than that from other water sports. Multiple etiologies of injury have been reported, including closed head trauma, spinal injuries, facial fractures, chest trauma, abdominal injuries, and drowning. These injuries may occur from collision with other objects, falls from the PWC, and encounters with the hydrostatic jet stream. The most significant contributing factors to injury seem t

OBJECTIVE: To describe environmental and personal risk factors associated with watercraft-related drownings. This information may be useful in developing boating safety programs, regulations, and enforcement priorities.
METHODS: A companion article in this issue (Unintentional Drownings Among New York State Residents, page 448) summarizes an investigation of 883 non-bathtub drownings among New York State residents for the years 1988 to 1994 using medical examiner, coroner, police, and hospital records in addition to death certificate data. This report details the environmental and personal ri

Personal flotation devices (PFD) are promoted and in many states are required for safe boating practices and to prevent drowning. Primary use of PFDs is associated with water sports (water skiing, tubing, etc.), boating and other water activities. Their purpose is to preserve life and prevent drowning. However, their effectiveness to prevent drowning and near-drowning has not been well established. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effectiveness of PFDs to prevent drowning and near-drowning of individuals involved in personal watercraft (PWC) crashes. Methods include the 4

Jet skiing is a rapidly growing sport. The craft incorporate safety features and the manufacturers issue detailed safety instructions. Racing is conducted with adequate attention to clothing, safety and insurance. However, casual use is widespread and is sometimes irresponsible. Serious injuries to riders are uncommon: dental and knee injuries are described. A case of renal contusion and a head injury were caused by other riders and two potentially fatal injuries illustrate the risk for other water users. The number of injuries associated with the use of personal watercraft is likely to increa
