Fall injuries among patients in selected hospitals of nepal: A cross-sectional study.

Fall injury statistics are scarce in low- and middle-income countries like Nepal. This study examines fall-related injuries and associated risk factors to address critical gaps in injury epidemiology and prevention. Data was collected from 18 August to 17 September 2023 from the emergency and inpatient departments of seven hospitals in Nepal, one from each province. A structured questionnaire, based on the WHO Guidelines, was used for data collection from patients or caregivers. Among 1,175 injury patients, 38.6% sustained nonfatal fall injuries. Males comprised 58.9% of cases. Most falls (93.

Independence of the mortality of severely injured patients from types of transport and hospital level in a well-developed trauma network.

INTRODUCTION: Despite over 50 years of research, trauma remains a significant global health issue. In addition to medical advancements, establishing trauma networks appears to positively impact the survival rates of severely injured patients. The influence of the type of transport (helicopter emergency medical service [HEMS] vs. ground emergency medical service [GEMS]) on mortality depending on the destination hospital in an established trauma network is currently unclear. The objective of the study was to evaluate this line of questioning within the context of an entire trauma network. MATER

Management of Traumatic Injury to the Left Foot in a 48-Year-Old Man: A Case Report.

Approaches to foot injury care depend on a range of clinical steps that promote proper healing and function. We present a case of a 48-year-old plumber who injured his left foot when a metal object fell on it at home. Initial management involved irrigation, suturing, antibiotics, analgesia, and a plain foot X-ray, which was normal. Follow-up at the Occupational Health Unit (OHU) addressed persistent swelling, pain, and numbness. Further evaluation ruled out a fracture, but the patient required extended sick leave and restrictions on weight-bearing tasks. He received nonsteroidal anti-inflammat

A comparison of the prevalence of cannabis and alcohol use among drivers and passengers in British Columbia and Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Similar to drink driving, the prevalence of driving under the influence of cannabis (DUIC) is expected to depend on the availability and cost of cannabis which would impact cannabis use in both drivers and passengers, and factors that specifically target cannabis use in drivers such as the deterrent effect of traffic laws and driver's opinion about the risks and acceptability of DUIC. To disentangle these effects, we aimed to compare the prevalence of alcohol and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) detection 1) in drivers vs. passengers involved in motor vehicle accidents and 2) in drivers

'It's only a flesh wound' - Understanding the safety culture in equine, production animal and mixed veterinary practices.

The veterinary industry has some of the highest rates of non-fatal work-related injuries, yet safety culture remains unexplored. Utilising a survey distributed to all UK employees of a consolidated group of veterinary practices, this study aimed to describe the prevalence of work-related injuries in equine, production animal, and mixed veterinary practices, and to understand the behaviours of injured persons. There were 144 respondents. Over 90 % of clinicians experienced injury during their careers, versus a third of non-clinical staff. Injuries to equine veterinarians were predominately kick

Fatal pneumopericardium in a road traffic accident: An uncommon contributor to death in the presence of traumatic brain injury.

A pneumopericardium is a condition characterized by the presence of air or gas within the pericardial sac. Sixty percent of pneumopericardium in adults is caused by traumatic events, specifically penetrating chest trauma. Clinical monitoring is sufficient for patients with no hemodynamic instability while waiting for air absorption. In contrast, if pericardial tamponade develops, pericardiocentesis or immediate surgery to seal the channel between air and pericardium is required. However, whenever there are multiple injuries are present, the clinician's attention can divert to a more severe for

Metabolic Implications of PCOS.

BACKGROUND: In children, necrotizing pneumonia (NP) is an uncommon, severe complication of pneumonia. It is characterized by destruction of the underlying lung parenchyma resulting in multiple small, thin-walled cavities and is often accompanied by empyema and bronchopleural fistulae. REVIEW: NP in children was first reported in children in 1994, and since then there has been a gradual increase in cases, which is partially explained by greater physician awareness and use of contrast computed tomography (CT) scans, and by temporal changes in circulating respiratory pathogens and antibiotic pre

Impact of real-time weather conditions on crash injury severity in Kentucky using the correlated random parameters logit model with heterogeneity in means.

The present study investigated the impact of real-time weather (air temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, wind speed, and solar radiation) on crash injury severity. Recent crash data (January 2016 to April 2021) on Interstate-75 in the state of Kentucky were merged with real-time weather information (retrieved from Kentucky Mesonet stations) at the 1-hour level. The severity index "SI" (i.e., the ratio of percent severe crashes to percent exposure of a specific weather state during the crash period) was introduced to evaluate the impact of different real-time weather states on fatal a

Development of a community severance index for urban areas in the United States: A case study in New York City.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Traffic-related exposures, such as air pollution and noise, have a detrimental impact on human health, especially in urban areas. However, there remains a critical research and knowledge gap in understanding the impact of community severance, a measure of the physical separation imposed by road infrastructure and motorized road traffic, limiting access to goods, services, or social connections, breaking down the social fabric and potentially also adversely impacting health. We aimed to robustly quantify a community severance metric in urban settings exemplified by its char
