Restraint use characteristics among crash-involved child passengers: identifying opportunities to enhance optimal restraint use.

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to describe child passenger restraint use in police reported crashes by key child and driver characteristics. METHODS: We used data from 2017-2019 police reported crashes in New Jersey to identify child passengers who: (1) were less than 13 years of age, (2) were in an identified seating location in the first, second, or third vehicle row, and (3) had a known restraint status at the time of the crash. We described prevalence of child restraint use by key child and driver characteristics (child: age, sex, seating position, and crash-reported injury status; driver:

Motor Vehicle Crash and Hospital Charges in Front- and Rear-Seated Restrained and Unrestrained Adult Motor Vehicle Occupants.

UNLABELLED: There are reports that historically higher mortality observed for front- compared to rear-seated adult motor vehicle (MV) occupants has narrowed. Vast improvements have been made in strengthening laws and restraint use in front-, but not rear-seated occupants suggesting there may be value in expanding the science on rear-seat safety. METHODS: A linked 2016-2017 hospital and MV crash data set, the Crash Outcomes Data Evaluation System (CODES), was used to compare characteristics of front-seated (n = 115,939) and rear-seated (n = 5729) adults aged 18 years and older involved in a MV

Cold burns as a result of cosmetic cryolipolysis: An emerging concern from the NSW Statewide Burn Injury Service.

Cold burns are an uncommon mechanism of burn injury in Australia, where environmental exposure to freezing temperatures is rare. Aetiological research shows that most likely causes are related to intentional injury or industrial accidents1 Cryolipolysis, a cosmetic technique advertised as 'fat freezing', has recently emerged as a method of fat reduction and body contouring. Whilst perceived as safe4,5, this study presents the world's first case series on cold burns sustained from cryolipolysis. A retrospective review was undertaken of the New South Wales Statewide Burn Injury Service (SBIS) Re

The Impact of Aging Drivers and Vehicles on the Injury Severity of Crash Victims.

Against a general trend of increasing driver longevity, the injuries suffered by vehicle occupants in Spanish road traffic crashes are analyzed by the level of severity of their bodily injuries (BI). Generalized linear mixed models are applied to model the proportion of non-serious, serious, and fatal victims. The dependence between vehicles involved in the same crash is captured by including random effects. The effect of driver age and vehicle age and their interaction on the proportion of injured victims is analyzed. We find a nonlinear relationship between driver age and BI severity, with y

The effect of Rear-End collisions on triaxial acceleration to occupant cervical and lumbar Spines: An analysis of IIHS data.

Rear-end impacts are the most frequent type of the more than seven million motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) occurring annually in the United States. The cervical and lumbar spine are the most commonly injured sites as a result of rear-end collisions. The direction and magnitude of accelerations and forces to the spine are considered primary indicators of injury. Yet, there is a dearth of research regarding the relation and quantification of vehicle to occupant accelerations, as well as triaxial acceleration components (and thus, forces) to occupant spines in rear-end impacts. Therefore, the cur
