Advanced Automatic Crash Notification Algorithm for Children.

BACKGROUND: Advanced automatic crash notification (AACN) can improve triage decision-making by using vehicle telemetry to alert first responders of a motor vehicle crash and estimate an occupant's likelihood of injury. The objective was to develop an AACN algorithm to predict the risk that a pediatric occupant is seriously injured and requires treatment at a Level I or II trauma center. METHODS: Based on 3 injury facets (severity; time sensitivity; predictability), a list of Target Injuries associated with a child's need for Level I/II trauma center treatment was determined. Multivariable log

Occupational Traffic Accidents among Teachers in Spain.

Occupational traffic accidents are a leading cause of injuries or deaths among workers. Teachers in Spain are especially concerned about the problem of commuting due to their particular labor conditions. Multiple work-related factors are associated with the risk and severity of occupational traffic-related motor vehicle crashes. The objective of this research is to analyze the influence of the variables associated with the severity of occupational traffic accidents among teachers in Spain. A logistic regression model was used for the current study. The odds ratio (OR) and confidence interval (

Validating the danger of vehicular protective devices and bowel injury.

INTRODUCTION: Protective devices such as seat belts and airbags have improved the safety of motor vehicle occupants, but limited data suggest they may be associated with increased blunt bowel (small bowel or colon) injuries (BI). Unfortunately, this risk is unquantified. METHODS: We analyzed the National Trauma Data Bank (2017-2019) using ICD-10 codes to identify adult motor vehicle occupants with BI who underwent surgical repair. We used logistic regression modeling to compare the risk of undergoing surgical repair for BI after using a protective device. RESULTS: Of 2,848,592 injured patien

The human impact of commercial delivery cycling injuries: a pilot retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Commercial delivery cyclists represent a uniquely vulnerable and poorly understood road user. The primary aim of this study was to pilot whether cycling injuries could be categorised as either commercial or non-commercial using documentation entered into routine hospital medical records, in order to determine the feasibility of conducting a large cohort study of commercial cycling injuries in the future. A secondary aim was to determine which key demographic, incident and injury characteristics were associated with commercial versus non-commercial cycling injuries in emergency. ME

In situ 3D bioprinting with bioconcrete bioink.

In-situ bioprinting is attractive for directly depositing the therapy bioink at the defective organs to repair them, especially for occupations such as soldiers, athletes, and drivers who can be injured in emergency. However, traditional bioink displays obvious limitations in its complex operation environments. Here, we design a bioconcrete bioink with electrosprayed cell-laden microgels as the aggregate and gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) precursor solution as the cement. Promising printability is guaranteed with a wide temperature range benefiting from robust rheological properties of photocros

ICF-Based Job Performance Predictors for South Korean Industrial Accident Workers: Population-Based 3-Year Longitudinal Analysis.

Since workers who have experienced industrial accidents may have a physical impairment, their workload is very likely to be less than before the industrial accident. This epidemiological study identified ICF-based predictive factors affecting the work performance of South Korean workers who were economically active after undergoing medical treatment (rehabilitation) related to injuries caused by industrial accidents by using the Panel Study of Worker's Compensation Insurance (2018-2020) as a reference. We analyzed 1383 subjects who were engaged in economic activities. The explanatory variables

Experiences, impacts and service needs of injured and ill workers in the WSIB process: evidence from Thunder Bay and District (Ontario, Canada).

INTRODUCTION: Individuals experience negative physical, social and psychological ramifications when they are hurt or become ill at work. Ontario's Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) is intended to mitigate these effects, yet the WSIB process can be difficult. Supports for injured workers can be fragmented and scarce, especially in underserved areas. We describe the experiences and mental health needs of injured and ill Northwestern Ontario workers in the WSIB process, in order to promote system improvements. METHODS: Community-recruited injured and ill workers (n = 40) from Thunder B

Impact of comorbidities on survival following major injury across different types of road users.

BACKGROUND: While comorbidities and types of road users are known to influence survival in people hospitalised with injury, few studies have examined the association between comorbidities and survival in people injured in road traffic crashes. Further, few studies have examined outcomes across different types of road users with different types of pre-existing comorbidities. This study aims to examine differences in survival within 30 days of admission among different road user types with and without different pre-existing comorbidities. METHOD: Retrospective cohort study using data for all ma

They built this city-construction workers injured in Delhi, India: cross-sectional analysis of First Information Reports of the Delhi Police 2016-2018.

BACKGROUND: Construction workers are 3-4 times more likely than other workers to die from accidents at work-however, in the developing world, the risks associated with construction work may be 6 times greater. India does not publish occupational injury statistics, and so little is known about construction workers injured. We aimed to use Indian police records to describe the epidemiology of construction site injuries in Delhi and to thus generate knowledge that may help to control the burden of injuries to construction workers in India and in other developing countries. METHODS: This was a cr

A Retrospective Cohort Study on the Clinical Characteristics of Patients with Surgical Blunt Bowel and/or Mesenteric Injuries among Motorcyclists and Car Occupants.

(1) Background: Surgical blunt bowel and/or mesenteric injuries (BBMIs) are rare but challenging for trauma surgeons. Surgical BBMI is associated with specific injury mechanisms, such as direct compression by the handlebar in motorcycle accidents or rapid acceleration and deceleration of the impact forces associated with seatbelt injuries in motor vehicle collisions. However, the discussions on the implications of BBMI and the mechanisms of road traffic accidents remain scarce. This retrospective study assessed the clinical and injury characteristics of surgically proven BBMI among motorcyclis
