[Potentially hazardous exposure to blood among hospital personnel. A retrospective study of systematically registered exposure during the period 1990-1994].

The purpose of this study was to investigate the self-reported incidence of needlesticks and other exposures to patients' blood or body fluids among employees at Glostrup County Hospital, Copenhagen. Furthermore the nature of and circumstances under which these exposures occurred were explored. Four hundred and thirty-two reports of exposure were received from 389 health care workers during a period of four years (1990-1994). Ninety-three percent of the exposures were percutaneous, 7% mucocutaneous. The incidence rates of exposure per full-time employee per year were as follows: Midwives: 0.11

Epidemiology of hazardous materials responses by Massachusetts district HAZMAT teams.

Hazardous materials releases can cause substantial morbidity and mortality, but very few studies have systemically investigated them. We analyzed responses by Massachusetts' six district hazardous materials (HAZMAT) teams from the time of their inception through February 1994. Spills, leaks, and other escapes of materials caused or contributed to 67 of 85 (79%) incidents. Transportation-related accidents accounted for 13 of 83 (16%), whereas the remainder of the releases occurred at fixed facilities. The chemicals most frequently involved were various hydrocarbons and corrosive materials. Most

Agricultural health and safety in Australia.

Farm injury is a major problem for agriculture in Australia. Agriculture is subject to rates of work-related deaths that are among the highest in Australia, while on-farm injuries result in between 20 and 60 presentations to rural hospital emergency departments per 100 farms per annum. Pervention of farm injury has been constrained by: (i) lack of relevant information regarding injury causation; (ii) lack of appropriate education and training in occupational health and safety; (iii) limited applicability of previous occupational health and safety legislation; and (iv) lack of the necessary man

The role of managed care in work-related injuries.

Many opportunities exist today for orthopedic surgeons in the treatment and management of work-related injuries. Physicians wishing to enter or participate in this market must realize that the role of the physician in the treatment of the injured worker has expanded from one of being solely the care giver to being a patient manager, a problem solver, and a communicator. A number of years ago, many orthopedic surgeons missed out on managed care contracting for health maintenance organizations because they thought they could survive without it. They soon learned the challenges of sitting on the

An epidemiological study of roadway fatalities related to farm vehicles: United States, 1988 to 1993.

Compared with the estimated injury fatality rate for workers in all occupations (nine in 100,000 in 1988) the farm fatality rate (48 in 100,000) was among the highest in the nation; in 1993, these rates were eight and 35 in 100,000, respectively. On-road farm-vehicle fatalities have been identified as a significant problem, yet these events apparently have not been investigated in a comprehensive manner. The purpose of this study was to investigate the circumstances surrounding all on-road, non-truck, farm-vehicle crash fatalities in the United States form 1988 through 1993. The National Highw

Cement-related burns.

Burns caused by prolonged contact of wet cement with skin are common in this country. Recent literature has highlighted other ways in which the use and manufacture of cement can lead to burn injuries, notably through explosion and contact with hot powder during manufacturing. These injuries are uncommon in this country and potentially very serious. Case studies are presented of two men injured in such a way in the same incident at a cement-manufacturing plant.

Work patterns and occupational hazard exposures of North Carolina adolescents in 4-H clubs.

OBJECTIVES: This study documents sex differences in work patterns, injuries, and hazard exposures among adolescents in homes, farms, and other work sites. METHODS: 14 to 17 year old 4-H club members were asked to complete self administered questionnaires regarding their lifetime experience of work, hazard exposure, and injuries. RESULTS: Of 323 respondents, more than two thirds had ever worked paid jobs. Fifty seven per cent were injured during non-farm work and hazards were part of the non-farm work environment for 54% of the respondents. Males were more likely to work in hazardous conditio

Play it safe in long-term care facilities.

Instead of caring for patients, nurses and other healthcare workers at long term facilities are increasingly becoming patients themselves. Over the past decade, the injury rate among nursing home workers jumped by 55%, with more than 200,000 of these workers injured annually. This article discusses the types of injuries suffered and how they can be prevented.

[Injuries to the cervical spine in automobile accidents].

Despite the improvement of protective properties in vehicles acceleration injuries to the cervical spine have not lost their significance. The increase of minor injuries and a high rate of seat belt usage is, beside other reasons, responsible for the increase of mild cervical spine injuries. From a data pool of 15,000 vehicle-vehicle collisions the portion of cervical spine injuries was selected for further investigation. Acceleration injuries to the cervical spine occur especially during rear end collisions. It can be shown that women, front seat occupants and occupants of lighter vehicles ha

Interview protocols and ergonomics checklist for analysing overexertion back accidents among nursing personnel.

No documented strategy, including preventive strategies, for systematic investigation of overexertion back accidents among nursing personnel has yet been published. One aim of the present study was to develop standardized instruments for the systematic investigation of back accidents among nursing personnel in order to develop preventive strategies. Another aim was to produce a screening tool that could easily be used for identifying potential overexertion back accident hazards. Two structured interview protocols were developed, one for the injured person and one for the supervisor. An ergonom

Personality self-representations of patients with hand injury, and its relationship with work injury.

This study compared the personality self-representations of 288 hand injured patients with those of 959 young people (15-25 years old) randomly selected from the general population (noted GP), and with those of 336 unemployed people of all ages in professional training (U) in Lorraine (north-eastern France). The relationship between patients' personality self-representations and injury was also investigated. Personality self-representations included 14 questions: in your own opinion are you sociable?, at ease with others?, serious?, careful?, dynamic?, optimistic?, worried?, irritable?, clumsy

[Peripheral vascular injuries in polytrauma].

Between 1972 und 1993 a total of 68 patients were treated at the Department of Surgery of the University Clinic of Mannheim for peripheral vascular injury resulting from multiple trauma. The average age of these patients was 31.3 years, and most of them were male (88.2%; n = 60). The injured vessels were localized evenly in all the extremities: 31 patients (45.5%) presented with arterial damage of the upper extremity, and 37 (54.5%) showed lesions along the femoro-popliteal arteries. The most frequent location of injured vessels in the multiply traumatized patient was the popliteal artery (n =

[Accidental pricking by a needle in a third-level hospital: associated factors].

The needlestick injuries are the most frequent accidents among hospital staff. The aim of this study is to identify some factors associated with accidents caused by needlestick injuries at hospitals, so as to measure the risk that they present. A case-control study has been made, the subject of which is the nurses working at "Reina Sofía" Hospital in Córdoba and within the period June 30, 1990 and June 30, 1991. A more significant factor in relation to needlestick injuries was the recapping of the needle after being used. The risk of injury being 3.95, 7.68 an 17.85 times higher between those

Epidemiologic characteristics of drivers, vehicles, pedestrians and road environments involved in road traffic injuries in rural Thailand.

This report presents descriptive epidemiology of vehicle-related crashes that caused severe injuries in a defined geographical area in northern Thailand, conducted to determine the nature of injuries and factors that contributed to the crashes. In each incident, the driver and other victims were identified and interviewed by a trained public health worker using a standard investigation form. During 1991, 286 single-vehicle crashes (66.4%), 117 crashes with other vehicles (27.1%), and 28 crashes involving pedestrians (6.5%) occurred in the area. These crashes injured 581 persons (551 vehicle oc

Fatal injuries to restrained passenger car occupants in Canada: crash modes and kinematics of injury.

Passenger car collisions with other vehicles and with fixed objects were studied from a representative sample of fatal and injury-producing collisions collected according to a prescribed sampling plan. This paper describes our analysis of accidents involving restrained passenger car occupants who are fatally injured in collisions. Lateral collisions were found to be predominant, and both lateral and frontal collisions were associated with marked intrusion into the occupant compartment, causing direct, severe injuries to the head and chest of these occupants. Multiple severe injuries to more th

The localizing value of asymmetry in pupillary size in severe head injury: relation to lesion type and location.

Reliable Assessment of the probability that a head injury patient harbors a surgical intracranial lesion is critical to both triage and treatment. The authors analyzed data from 608 patients with severe head injuries (Glasgow Coma Scale score, < or = 8) in the Traumatic Coma Data Bank to assess the reliability of pupillary asymmetry in predicting the presence and location of an intracranial mass lesion. Of 210 patients with pupillary asymmetry of > or = 1 mm, 63 (30%) had intracranial mass lesions, 52 (25%) of which were extra-axial in location, 38 (73%) of these located ipsilateral to the lar
