Injuries to international petroleum drilling workers, 1988 to 1990.

Nonfatal work-related injury (NFI) rates are 49% higher among oil and gas field workers than among workers in all US industries combined, and these injuries are more severe (the rate of lost workdays in the oil and gas field services industry is 2.8 times that of all US industries combined). We analyzed the 1988 to 1990 incident reports submitted by drilling companies to the International Association of Drilling Contractors, an industry-wide international trade association representing 95% of the world's oil and gas drilling companies. We determined geographic and occupation-specific incidence

Smoking and injuries: an overview.

BACKGROUND: Although the disease consequences of cigarette smoking are well documented, smoking may also be associated with increased risk of injury. Our purpose is to provide an overview of this potential association. METHODS: We conducted a literature review. RESULTS: Cigarettes are the leading cause of death from fire and the second leading cause of fire-related injury. Studies estimate that compared with nonsmokers, smokers appear 1.5 times more likely to have a motor vehicle crash, 1.4-2.5 times more likely to be injured at work, and 2.0 times more likely to suffer other unintentional i

Epidemiological analysis of serious occupational accidents in southern Finland.

The aims of this article were, on the one hand, to indicate the risk groups exposed to serious occupational accidents and, on the other hand, to examine what makes serious occupational accidents 'serious'. We compared the data on 99 serious occupational accidents gathered by ourselves to the information from official statistics. The results showed that the risk of a serious accident was highest for a man working in the manufacturing industry, at a construction site, or in transporting, and who was in his first year of service. Typical serious occupational accidents were falls from heights, acc

Characteristics, hospital charges, and effects of road transportation injuries in Vermont.

We studied 470 crash- and noncrash-related road transportation injuries to vehicle occupants, bicyclists, and pedestrians seen at a trauma center in Vermont. Among primary care patients, crash and noncrash groups had similar AIS and average disability at one year. Hospitalized patients had longer disability, but a majority of overall disability days and ongoing disability was found among nonhospitalized patients. Seventy-four percent of hospital bills were paid by insurance, 16% by government, 3% by self, with 7% unpaid. Limiting the sample only to hospitalized patients, or including referred

Ergonomics aspects of tree-planting using 'multipot' technology.

The highlights of a descriptive study on the ergonomics and occupational health and safety aspects of tree-planting in Québec are presented. The study was planned to consider the most representative geographical sites, planting technologies, and planting organizations. Semi-directed interviews were made with a mixed group of 48 male and female tree-planters and physiological measurements were made on four male planters. Tools and other equipment were also examined. An analysis of the work identified the main elements of the planting cycle, and the high cardiac rate in the working planters was

The injured motor cycle messenger.

Injured motor cycle messengers make up a small but significant proportion of the young injured attending Central London accident and emergency (A&E) departments. The study confirms that the pattern of their injuries is similar to other injured urban motor cyclists, and discusses the background of the injured, in terms of experience and training, highlighting the frequency of injury and possible predisposing factors. A total of 116 injured motor cycle messengers attending two Central London A&E departments over a 10-month period were studied. Thirteen per cent sustained sufficiently serious inj

[Accidents affecting potato harvesters].

During industrialization in agriculture, many farming machines have been introduced. It is well-known that farming is a dangerous workplace and that farm machinery cause many serious accidents every year. Four cases of accidents with potato harvesters are discussed. In three of four cases the farmers were injured while cleaning the machine without stopping it, which probably was the main cause of the accidents. Farmers are in general not careful enough when using farm machinery. Every year, farmers in Denmark are severely invalided in accidents with potato harvesters. A strategy to lower the a

The epidemiology of injury in a rural state: 5,322 cases over 6 years.

Presently, descriptions of rural trauma are complications of national sample statistics and local data from states projected to rural areas. This study reviews all hospital discharges (36,866) for children (aged 0 to 18 years) from January 1985 through December 1990 in an entirely rural state. Fourteen percent of admissions (5,322) were due to traumatic injury and 63% of these occurred in boys. Injury rates were age dependent with children 15 to 18 years experiencing an incidence of 110/10,000; 10 to 14 years 55/10,000; 5 to 9 years 39/10,000; 1 to 4 years 35/10,000; and < 1 year 39.5/10,000.

Neck injuries among belted and unbelted occupants of the front seat of cars.

This article, part of a recently completed research project on safety belts, presents results on neck injuries. A total of 3927 injured front-seat occupants (drivers and passengers) involved in two-car crashes were studied. Among them, 725 sustained neck sprains (ICD-9 code 847.0); some of them may have sustained other injuries as well. The more serious injuries to the cervical spine were more prevalent among the unbelted occupants. Neck sprains were relatively more numerous among belted occupants compared with unbelted ones, with a relative risk estimate of 1.68. Similar results hold also for

Alcohol and drug use among motor vehicle collision victims admitted to a regional trauma unit: demographic, injury, and crash characteristics.

This study examined the incidence of alcohol and drugs in a sample of seriously injured motor vehicle collision victims, and differences related to pre-crash use of alcohol and/or other drugs on demographic variables, injury severity measures, and crash variables. The sample selected were all motor vehicle collision admissions to the Regional Trauma Unit at the Sunnybrook Health Science Centre in Toronto, Ontario, over a 37-month period (N = 854). Prospective demographic and injury-related information were collected from hospital charts, and crash data were collected from motor vehicle collisi

The dangers of dairy farming: the injury experience of 600 workers followed for two years.

In order to better understand the work-related injuries sustained on central New York dairy farms, we undertook a two-year population-based study of 600 farmers and farm workers on 201 dairy farms. During the observation period, 1984-1986, 151 persons had 200 injuries, giving an injury rate of 16.6%/year (166 injuries/1,000 workers/year). Men were injured more often than women (p less than or equal to 0.01). Injured workers were older (p less than or equal to 0.01), worked more hours (p less than or equal to 0.001), and had heavier workloads than noninjured workers (p less than or equal to 0.0

Two cases of accidental transmission of hepatitis C to medical staff.

Two medical doctors (a 38-year-old male and a 25-year-old female) were admitted to our department with jaundice. They had injured themselves with, respectively, a scalpel and a needle contaminated with anti-hepatitis C virus antibody-positive blood, at 2 and 1.5 months, respectively, prior to admission. They were both suffering from clinically typical acute hepatitis. The polymerase chain reaction showed that hepatitis C RNA and anti-hepatitis C virus antibody were transiently positive in the male doctor, while serum transaminase levels were transiently abnormal. In the female doctor, hepatiti

Occupational injuries among minors doing farm work in Washington State: 1986 to 1989.

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence that many children are injured while engaged in agricultural work. However, little specific information on farm work-related injuries among minors is available, probably because employment or workers' compensation data for children are hard to obtain. METHODS: Workers' compensation data were used to evaluate occupational injuries among children in Washington State from 1986 through 1989. The frequency and severity of injuries among minors doing farm work were compared with the distributions of injuries among minors working in food service and all other oc

Workers' disability and return to work.

A severe injury on the job often results in a medical recovery period requiring either a temporary or long-term absence from work. Rehabilitation interventions emphasizing return to work may facilitate recovery and prevent workers from becoming unemployed. A review of the current literature suggests a direct relationship between workers' demographic and disability-related characteristics, early referral to rehabilitation and successful return to work. This article describes findings from a research study designed to investigate factors associated with the return to work of injured workers. Dat

Percutaneous injuries during surgical procedures.

OBJECTIVE: To study the numbers and circumstances of percutaneous injuries (eg, needle sticks, cuts) that occur during surgical procedures. Surgical personnel risk infection with blood-borne pathogens from percutaneous injuries; some injuries might also place patients at risk by exposing them to a health care worker's blood. DESIGN: Observers present at 1382 surgical procedures recorded information about the procedure, the personnel present, and percutaneous injuries that occurred. SETTING: Four US teaching hospitals during 1990. PARTICIPANTS: Operating room personnel in five surgical speci

Penetration eye injuries in the workplace. The National Eye Trauma System Registry.

Occupational eye injuries are common and preventable. Between 1985 and 1991, there were 635 work-related penetrating eye injuries among the 2939 cases (22%) reported to the National Eye Trauma System Registry by 48 collaborating centers in 28 states and Washington, DC. The median age of the injured workers was 30 years; 75% were younger than 40 years; and 97% were male. The commonest causes of injuries were projectiles (457 cases), sharp objects (166 cases), blunt objects (60 cases), and blasts (22 cases); these terms are not mutually exclusive. Specific objects causing injuries included nails

Injuries to the elderly in the traffic environment.

Two hundred ninety-seven persons, all aged 60 or over (180 women, 117 men), injured in the traffic environment, and treated at the Regional Hospital in Umeå, over a one-year period, were analysed. Injuries were grouped into three main categories: falls (52%), vehicle-associated events (44%), and "other" injury events (4%). In women, falls were a more common cause of injury than vehicle events, whilst in men there was a tendency for a converse relationship. Two-thirds of the falls involved slipping on ice and snow. Ice- and snow- related injuries (all categories) accounted for 37% of the total
