Fusion of the Pharyngeal Wall to the Soft Palate Around the Laryngeal Inlet Isolates the Airway in Odontocete Cetaceans.

In odontocete cetaceans (toothed whales, dolphins, and porpoises), a palatopharyngeal sphincter permanently anchors the laryngeal inlet in the nasopharynx and isolates the airway from the gut tube. Using an MRI data set of a pacific white-sided dolphin (Aethalodelphis obliquidens), together with dissections of the dolphin and two neonatal harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), we show that the sphincter is formed by fusion of part of the superior constrictor of the pharyngeal wall to the soft palate. The part of the superior constrictor that participates in forming the sphincter is brought clo

Unveiling the uncommon: Cholesterol granuloma in the nasopharynx of a young patient.

BACKGROUND: Cholesterol granulomas are benign cystic lesions primarily found in the petrous apex of the temporal bone, often presenting diagnostic challenges due to their similarity to other lesions. Known for containing cholesterol-rich fluid, these granulomas can cause chronic inflammation and a range of symptoms, from mild headaches to severe neurological issues. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 14-year-old Iranian female with recurrent flu-like symptoms, nasal congestion, dysarthria, and obstructive sleep apnea. Examination revealed a cystic mass in the nasopharynx, and imaging co

Skull Base Rhabdomyosarcoma Mimicking Osteomyelitis in a Pediatric Patient.

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a rare malignant tumor, affecting 4.58 per 1 million children, with approximately 35% occurring in the head and neck. Skull base RMS commonly presents at advanced stages and delays diagnosis due to its overlapping features with other skull base pathology, and difficulty accessing the lesion for biopsy. This case illustrates these challenges in skull base RMS mimicking osteomyelitis of the petrous apex. Case: A 6-year-old immunocompetent female, with a history of two acute otitis media episodes, presented with a 3-week history of sixth cranial nerve palsy and sudden-on

Glomus Tumor in the Neck Region Misdignosed Initially as Metastatic Lymphadenopathy.

Glomus tumor is a rare benign neoplasm derived from glomus cells of arteriovenous anastomoses, typically occurring in the distal extremities. Its occurrence in the head and neck region is exceedingly rare and shows overlapped clinical features with other cervical diseases, such as metastatic malignant tumors in the neck, cervical schwannomas, and chronic lymphadenitis. Herein, we report a 37-year-old male with a painless cervical mass. Initial imaging assessments with contrast-enhanced CT and PET-CT raised suspicion of metastatic nasopharyngeal cancer. However, after undergoing 2 biopsies of t

Extranasopharyngeal Angiofibroma in the Tongue: A Case Report With Literature Review.

Angiofibroma is a rare, benign vascular tumor traditionally associated with the nasopharynx of adolescent males. In contrast, extranasopharyngeal angiofibromas (ENAs) exhibit a wider demographic distribution and may arise in diverse anatomical sites. We report a case involving a 45 year-old woman presenting with a 4 month history of a mass located on the lateral border of the anterior tongue. Complete excision under local anesthesia was performed. Histopathological analysis demonstrated a proliferation of irregular vascular channels lined by benign endothelial cells, set within a fibrovascular

Enhanced detection of skull-base bone invasion in nasopharyngeal carcinoma: the supplementary diagnostic value of 18fluorine-sodium fluoride (18F-NaF) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) combined with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) originates in the nasopharyngeal mucosa, the lateral wall of the nasopharynx. A significant challenge in NPC management is skull-base bone invasion (SBBI), which affects prognosis and treatment planning. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the primary diagnostic tool for SBBI in NPC patients; however, the detection of SBBI can be challenging due to skull-base complexity and overlapping MRI signals. 18fluorine-sodium fluoride (18F-NaF) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) is an emerging imaging technique that has shown promise in d

Correlation of the Size of Adenoids With Impedance Audiometry Findings.

Introduction Adenoid tissue is part of the first line of immunity of the upper aero-digestive tract. It is located in the postero-superior wall of the nasopharynx behind the choana. Adenoid hypertrophy, a common childhood disorder, significantly contributes to the pathogenesis of otitis media with effusion (OME), which is the leading cause of hearing impairment in young children. This condition can result in delayed speech, poor academic performance, and language development issues. Assessing the size of the adenoids and their correlation with OME is crucial, as undiagnosed cases can lead to c

Adenoid Ameloblastoma Shares Clinical, Histologic, and Molecular Features With Dentinogenic Ghost Cell Tumor: The Histologic Spectrum of WNT Pathway-Altered Benign Odontogenic Tumors.

An epithelial odontogenic tumor called adenoid ameloblastoma (AA) has recently been included in the new WHO classification. However, AA has considerable overlapping features with a preexisting entity, dentinogenic ghost cell tumor (DGCT). This study compared the clinical, histologic, and molecular characteristics of AA and DGCT. Eight cases of odontogenic tumors initially diagnosed as AA or DGCT were included in this study. Quantitative histologic analysis, β-catenin immunohistochemistry, and molecular profiling using next generation sequencing were performed. Additionally, accumulated clinica

A Midsagittal-View Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study of the Growth and Involution of the Adenoid Mass and Related Changes in Selected Velopharyngeal Structures.

PURPOSE: The adenoids, or pharyngeal tonsils, consist of a pad of lymphoid tissue, located on the posterior pharyngeal wall of the nasopharynx. During childhood, the adenoid pad serves as a contact site for the soft palate to assist with velopharyngeal closure during oral speech. During adenoidal involution, most children are able to maintain appropriate velopharyngeal closure necessary for normal speech resonance. The purpose of this study is to determine age-related trends of normal adenoid growth and involution from infancy through adulthood. METHOD/DESCRIPTION: Lateral view magnetic reson

3D numerical simulation of hot airflow in the human nasal cavity and trachea.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The primary function of the human respiratory system is gas and moisture exchange, and conditioning inhaled air to prevent damage to the lungs and alveoli. In a fire incident, exposed soft tissues contract and the respiratory system may be severely damaged, possibly leading to respiratory failure and even respiratory arrest. The purpose of this study is to numerically simulate hot airflow in the human upper airway and trachea to investigate heat and moisture transfer and induced thermal injuries. METHODS: For analysis, the airflow is assumed to be laminar and steady,

Cribriform adenocarcinoma of minor salivary glands presented as a nasopharyngeal tumor: A case report highlighting the significance of cytology.

Cribriform adenocarcinoma of minor salivary gland (CAMSG) is a rare malignancy presenting cytologic features resembling papillary thyroid carcinoma, localized in the oral cavity and oropharynx. Although cervical lymph node (LN) metastasis is a frequent manifestation of CMSG, there are few publications evaluating its cytology. The aim of this report was to present a CAMSG in an unusual location in the light of cytologic features, thereby enriching the spectrum of fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) differential diagnosis. We report a case of a 76-year-old woman presenting an enlarged submandib
