Fusion of the Pharyngeal Wall to the Soft Palate Around the Laryngeal Inlet Isolates the Airway in Odontocete Cetaceans.

In odontocete cetaceans (toothed whales, dolphins, and porpoises), a palatopharyngeal sphincter permanently anchors the laryngeal inlet in the nasopharynx and isolates the airway from the gut tube. Using an MRI data set of a pacific white-sided dolphin (Aethalodelphis obliquidens), together with dissections of the dolphin and two neonatal harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), we show that the sphincter is formed by fusion of part of the superior constrictor of the pharyngeal wall to the soft palate. The part of the superior constrictor that participates in forming the sphincter is brought clo

Correlation of the Size of Adenoids With Impedance Audiometry Findings.

Introduction Adenoid tissue is part of the first line of immunity of the upper aero-digestive tract. It is located in the postero-superior wall of the nasopharynx behind the choana. Adenoid hypertrophy, a common childhood disorder, significantly contributes to the pathogenesis of otitis media with effusion (OME), which is the leading cause of hearing impairment in young children. This condition can result in delayed speech, poor academic performance, and language development issues. Assessing the size of the adenoids and their correlation with OME is crucial, as undiagnosed cases can lead to c

Characteristics of local extension based on tumor distribution in nasopharyngeal carcinoma and proposed clinical target volume delineation.

OBJECTIVES: To summarize the characteristics of local extension of eccentric and central nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to improve clinical target volume (CTV) delineation. METHODS: MRI of 870 newly diagnosed NPC patients were reviewed. According to tumor distribution features, the NPCs were divided into eccentric and central lesions. RESULTS: All local invasions presented as continuous invasion from gross lesions and structures adjacent to the nasopharynx were more likely to be invaded. There were 240 (27.6%) and 630 (72.4%) cases with central and ecc

A Midsagittal-View Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study of the Growth and Involution of the Adenoid Mass and Related Changes in Selected Velopharyngeal Structures.

PURPOSE: The adenoids, or pharyngeal tonsils, consist of a pad of lymphoid tissue, located on the posterior pharyngeal wall of the nasopharynx. During childhood, the adenoid pad serves as a contact site for the soft palate to assist with velopharyngeal closure during oral speech. During adenoidal involution, most children are able to maintain appropriate velopharyngeal closure necessary for normal speech resonance. The purpose of this study is to determine age-related trends of normal adenoid growth and involution from infancy through adulthood. METHOD/DESCRIPTION: Lateral view magnetic reson

3D numerical simulation of hot airflow in the human nasal cavity and trachea.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The primary function of the human respiratory system is gas and moisture exchange, and conditioning inhaled air to prevent damage to the lungs and alveoli. In a fire incident, exposed soft tissues contract and the respiratory system may be severely damaged, possibly leading to respiratory failure and even respiratory arrest. The purpose of this study is to numerically simulate hot airflow in the human upper airway and trachea to investigate heat and moisture transfer and induced thermal injuries. METHODS: For analysis, the airflow is assumed to be laminar and steady,

Extraoral anatomy in CBCT – a literature review. Part 1: Nasoethmoidal region.

Cone beam computed tomography has become a widely used imaging technique for dental indications. Depending on the selected size of the field of view, anatomical structures outside the dentomaxillary complex become visible. As a consequence, the clinician must be able to interpret also those anatomical regions. In this article, the anatomy of the nasoethmoidal region is presented based on a literature review. The nose is characterized by the nasal septum and the superior, middle, and inferior conchae. The turbinates may be pneumatized (concha bullosa), mainly the middle concha. The ethmoid bone

Substrate recognition and catalysis by LytB, a pneumococcal peptidoglycan hydrolase involved in virulence.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a major cause of life-threatening diseases worldwide. Here we provide an in-depth functional characterization of LytB, the peptidoglycan hydrolase responsible for physical separation of daughter cells. Identified herein as an N-acetylglucosaminidase, LytB is involved also in colonization and invasion of the nasopharynx, biofilm formation and evasion of host immunity as previously demonstrated. We have shown that LytB cleaves the GlcNAc-β-(1,4)-MurNAc glycosidic bond of peptidoglycan building units. The hydrolysis occurs at sites with fully acetylated GlcNAc moieties

Oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal sampling for the detection of adolescent Streptococcus pneumoniae carriers.

Monitoring the dynamics of pneumococcal carriage makes it possible to evaluate the epidemiological characteristics of Streptococcus pneumoniae disease and the theoretical coverage offered by pneumococcal vaccines. It has been demonstrated that the nasopharyngeal (NP) sampling of respiratory secretions is superior to oropharyngeal (OP) sampling for identifying pneumococci carried by younger children, but adult data are conflicting and there are no published studies of adolescents. In order to compare the efficiency of OP and NP sampling in identifying and quantifying S. pneumoniae carriage in h

Transnasal endoscopic resection of a nasopharyngeal pleomorphic adenoma: a rare case report.

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common benign tumor of the major and minor salivary glands, but rarely found in the nasopharynx. A PA originating from the left lateral wall of the nasopharynx was found in a 52-year-old female who presented with nasal obstruction, left-side otalgia, aural fullness, tinnitus and subjective hearing loss. It was successfully removed by transnasal endoscopic surgery (TES) and navigator system assessed our location, due to the proximity of critical anatomic structures such as the left internal carotid. We believe that the TES for primary and recurrent nasophary

Fat injections for the treatment of velopharyngeal insufficiency.

The aim of this article was to describe the technical details of a fat injection procedure for the treatment of mild to moderate velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI). Before surgery, the velopharyngeal gap is assessed by means of flexible nasoendoscopy, and speech intelligibility, hypernasality, and nasal air escape are perceptually evaluated and scored by independent raters; nasal airflow during speech is objectively measured. The lipoaspirate is centrifuged at 1200g for 3 minutes to separate and remove blood, cell debris, and the oily layer. Patients are injected with 3.5 to 8 mL of fat in the

Evaluation of postoperative function in patients undergoing reconstruction following resection of superior and lateral oropharyngeal cancer: long-term outcomes of reconstruction with the Gehanno method.

Resection of the superior or lateral wall of the cancer-affected oropharynx can often lead to disturbed nasal breathing, dysphagia, and dysarthria. The authors used the Gehanno method to reconstruct these surgical defects and achieved favourable functional recovery soon after surgery. The present study was undertaken to analyze the long-term outcome and usefulness of this method. Reconstruction was carried out using the Gehanno method in 36 patients during the 10-year period between 1997 and 2007. Both short-term and long-term evaluations of the postoperative function were performed in 12 of t

Nasopharyngeal colonization and invasive disease are enhanced by the cell wall hydrolases LytB and LytC of Streptococcus pneumoniae.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus pneumoniae is a common colonizer of the human nasopharynx and one of the major pathogens causing invasive disease worldwide. Dissection of the molecular pathways responsible for colonization, invasion, and evasion of the immune system will provide new targets for antimicrobial or vaccine therapies for this common pathogen. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We have constructed mutants lacking the pneumococcal cell wall hydrolases (CWHs) LytB and LytC to investigate the role of these proteins in different phases of the pneumococcal pathogenesis. Our results show that Lyt

A three-dimensional articulatory model of the velum and nasopharyngeal wall based on MRI and CT data.

An original three-dimensional (3D) linear articulatory model of the velum and nasopharyngeal wall has been developed from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography images of a French subject sustaining a set of 46 articulations, covering his articulatory repertoire. The velum and nasopharyngeal wall are represented by generic surface triangular meshes fitted to the 3D contours extracted from MRI for each articulation. Two degrees of freedom were uncovered by principal component analysis: first, VL accounts for 83% of the velum variance, corresponding to an oblique vertical movem
