World-record envelopes: The speed-distance trade-off in racing events.

The concept of a mathematical envelope, which is widely used in economics, can be applied to the relationship between world-record racing speeds and event distances. This paper derives and estimates world-record envelopes for running, freestyle swimming, and speed skating and shows how these envelopes are related to the underlying family of individual performance curves. It also compares world-record envelopes for men and women and shows that the world-record envelope in men's running has shifted upward over time but has not changed shape in 120 years. Finally, this paper shows that the speed-

MotionDreamer: Generating Continuous Intermediate Motions for Complex Motion Interpolation.

Interpolating complex motions is challenging due to their nonlinear, non-rigid nature and ambiguities. Recent diffusion-based methods mitigate this challenge as a conditional generation task, optionally with linear motion control. However, they cannot handle these complex motions because their reconstruction training objective biases models toward per-frame appearance fidelity, which can lead to unnatural movement. To address this, we propose MotionDreamer, a novel framework that instills effective motion priors for all intermediate frames to video generators by regularizing diffusion training

The intrinsic value of self-organized sport and physical activity: a narrative review.

In many populations, much of people's physical activity takes place outside clubs and organized competition, in self-organized forms that participants run themselves, from walking and strength training to skateboarding, parkour, and climbing. Policy and research tend to treat these forms as a residual category and to value them, when at all, for the same instrumental outcomes used to justify organized sport. This narrative review takes a different starting point and asks what is distinctively valuable about physical activity being self-organized. Its central argument is that the worth of these

Kalman-Based Joint Analysis of IMU and Plantar-Pressure Data During Speed-Skating Slideboard Training.

Efficient monitoring of lower-limb coordination is important for understanding movement characteristics during off-ice speed-skating training. This study aimed to develop an analytical framework to characterize the kinematic-kinetic coupling of the lower limbs during slideboard skating tasks using wearable sensors. Eight national-level junior speed skaters performed standardized simulated skating movements on a slideboard while wearing sixteen six-axis inertial measurement units (IMUs) and Pedar-X in-shoe plantar-pressure insoles. Joint-angle trajectories and plantar-pressure signals were temp

Metabolomic Signatures of Recovery: A Secondary Analysis of Public Longitudinal LC-MS Datasets Shows Polyphenol-Rich Interventions Attenuate Purine Degradation and Oxidative Stress Following Exhaustive Exercise.

Background: Post-exercise recovery involves coordinated metabolic restoration and redox rebalancing. Although dietary polyphenols have been proposed to facilitate recovery, the metabolic mechanisms underlying their effects-particularly during the recovery phase-remain insufficiently characterized. This study aimed to investigate how polyphenol supplementation modulates post-exercise metabolic recovery using an integrative metabolomics approach. Methods: We conducted a secondary analysis of publicly available longitudinal human LC-MS metabolomics datasets from exercise intervention studies with

Randomized controlled trial of whole body vibration training on lower limb muscle strength in sub elite short track speed skaters.

This randomized controlled trial aimed to examine the effects of whole-body vibration training (WBVT) at different frequencies on lower-limb muscular strength in sub-elite short-track speed skaters. This study employed a randomized controlled trial methodology. Subsequent to the screening process, a total of 75 male sub-elite short track speed skaters were selected from the Shenyang Sport University. Participants were randomly allocated to one of three groups (n = 25 per group): 30 Hz WBVT, 50 Hz WBVT, or a non-vibration control group. The intervention was administered twice weekly for four we

Focused Attention Meditation as a Pre-Exercise Strategy for Reducing Anxiety in Speed Skaters.

Anxiety is a common psychological challenge among athletes, particularly in response to intense training sessions. This randomized crossover study investigated the immediate effects of a single session of focused attention meditation on anxiety, autonomic responses, and performance during high-intensity intermittent training (HIIT) in twenty-six university-level speed skaters. Participants completed three pre-exercise interventions (focused attention meditation, controlled breathing, and random thinking) on separate occasions in a randomized order. Following each intervention, participants per

Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs) and site-specific bone mineral density in female adolescent artistic athletes.

Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs) negatively impacts bone mineral density (BMD), menstruation, growth, and maturation. The prevalence of REDs indicators in artistic adolescent athletes is unknown. The primary objective of this study was to examine the prevalence and factors associated with REDs in female adolescent artistic athletes. The secondary objective was to assess BMD and associated factors. Twenty artistic swimmers, 20 recreational/competitive dancers, 20 vocational dancers, and 14 figure skaters, 9-19 years old (mean 15.3 ± 2.6), participated in this cross-sectional study. Pa

Mind-Muscle-Environment Interactions: Psychophysiological Determinants of Optimal Pacing in Olympic Winter Endurance Sports.

Pacing is a critical determinant of performance in Olympic endurance winter sports such as cross-country skiing, biathlon, and speed skating. Although the physiological ("Движок") and psychological ("operator") determinants of pacing have frequently been examined in isolation, growing evidence highlights the need for an integrated psychophysiological perspective. This structured narrative review first outlines the defining characteristics of Olympic winter sports and, within this context, synthesizes current knowledge on the psychophysiological mechanisms governing pacing to inform optimal pre

AI-assisted and Big-Unit teaching enhance speed-skating performance through psychological mechanisms in adolescents: evidence from a three-arm intervention study.

BACKGROUND: Innovative instructional approaches are increasingly advocated in physical education to enhance both motor skill development and psychological adaptation. However, few studies have directly compared micro-level (AI-assisted) and macro-level (Big-Unit) teaching models, or examined the psychological mechanisms underlying performance improvements in adolescent winter-sport environments. METHODS: A three-arm, quasi-experimental longitudinal study was conducted with 129 first-year middle school students (AI-assisted: n = 42; Big-Unit: n = 43; Conventional: n = 44). Participants complet

Assessing High-Intensity Acceleration Efforts Using Local Positioning System-Introducing the Concept of the Relative Acceleration Threshold to Ice Hockey.

Current methods for assessing acceleration efforts (accefforts) in ice hockey do not account for the influence of initial skating speed on maximal voluntary acceleration capacity, which may lead to a biased evaluation of acceffort intensity. In this study, we introduce the conceptual approach of the relative acceleration threshold (relthreshold) to ice hockey and outline its potential benefits for the assessment of accefforts. Locomotion data derived from observations of 17 players across 10 official games were used to model the initial-skating-speed-dependent maximal voluntary acceleration ca
