BACKGROUND: Eating disorders are highly prevalent in aesthetic sports, where body weight and physical appearance are central to performance. In figure skating, aesthetic pressure from the competition uniform, along with psychological factors such as perfectionism, anxiety, and self-esteem, may increase the risk of eating disorder. This study examined the relationships between these variables and eating disorder risk among competitive figure skaters, and tested whether self-esteem, aesthetic pressure, and anxiety were indirectly associated with eating disorder risk through perfectionism.

Long-term specialized training can lead to increased inter-limb asymmetry in speed skaters. While excessive inter-limb asymmetry may impair athletic performance, its impact on different skating phases and the corresponding thresholds remain unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between lower limb strength asymmetry and split skating times, and to identify corresponding asymmetry thresholds using a data-driven Classification and Regression Tree (CART) analysis. Thirty-nine adolescent male speed skaters (age: 16.85 ± 0.81 years, height: 177.45 ± 4.26 cm, body m

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of an inline skating intervention on physical (fundamental movement skills [FMSs] and cardiovascular fitness [CF]) and cognitive (executive functions [EFs]) outcomes in children with ADHD. A pilot randomized trial, with an intervention lasting 12 weeks was conducted. During an initial 12-week phase, 13 children with ADHD (Group A) received the intervention (two sessions per week for 80 minutes per session), whereas another 13 children with ADHD (Group B) did not (true control, no intervention). During a second 12-week phase, Group B received th

OBJECTIVE: Figure skating is a sport with a high risk of eating disorders (EDs), disordered eating (DE), and low energy availability (LEA). There is currently a limited understanding of athlete experiences and factors affecting body image and nutritional choices. We assessed the prevalence of ED/DE and awareness of LEA pathology [Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs) and female athlete triad (Triad)]. We also assessed experiences and qualitative factors affecting food choices and feelings about body weight and/or shape.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
SETTING: One-time survey.

INTRODUCTION: Dual-task (DT) performance is a key component of game speed in ice hockey, where athletes must maintain high skating velocities while processing perceptual and cognitive information. Although DT training (DTT) and virtual reality training (VRT) are increasingly used in high-performance settings, little is known about their acute effects on DT speed performance and individual variability in responsiveness. Therefore, this study examined (1) the acute effects of DTT and VRT warm-up on DT tapping speed with two different cognitive conditions and (2) related performance outcome measu

This study analyzed oculomotor behavior (fixations and saccades) in 19 competitive inline speed skaters (5 males, 14 females; aged 10-26 years) from the Aragonese Skating Federation (Spain), comparing high-performance (N1) and intermediate (N2) groups. Participants completed optometric assessments and eye-tracking during 200 m time trials on a banked oval track using a Pupil Labs Neon device, with recordings taken before (PRE) and after (POST) intensive training. Results showed visual behavior remained stable overall, but curved segments (C1, C2) required significantly more fixations and sacca

This study proposes and verifies a method to estimate the ground reaction force (GRF) direction from supporting-leg posture during speed skating. We hypothesized that GRF direction can be accurately estimated from supporting-leg posture. Two estimation methods were developed under the assumption that the reaction force acts perpendicular to the shoe sole. One method used the coordinates of the front and rear blade ends and the ankle joint center (Est1). In contrast, the other used the coordinates of the front and rear blade ends and the knee joint center (Est2). The magnitude of each GRF compo

Inertial measurement units (IMUs) present promising avenues for performance diagnostics in skateboarding, yet systematic validation of their accuracy and applicability remains limited. This study validates the commercially available Spinnax Freak IMU system in the context of skateboarding, with a focus on selected trick detection and classification, distance measurement, maximal horizontal speed, maximal vertical height of the skateboard and airtime during a jump trick. A total of 23 skateboarders (4 females, 19 males; 27.4 ± 10.9 years) participated in this study. Validation methods included

Performance during motor activities, such as wheelchair riding, cycling, rowing, and speed skating, depends critically on the average mechanical power output (AMPO) produced by the muscles. To maximize short-duration performance, limb movements should allow muscles to deliver maximal AMPO. However, it is unclear which movement maximizes AMPO of human muscle. In this study, we employed a Hill-type muscle-tendon-complex (MTC) model to predict the maximally attainable AMPO of human m. quadriceps femoris for various imposed periodic knee joint movements. Based on these predictions, we selected one

BACKGROUND: Youth ice hockey is a popular sport worldwide. Because of its high physical demand and full contact nature of the game, injuries are common. Adolescent athletes, specifically those nearing the peak height velocity (PHV), represent a vulnerable subset of patients with particular susceptibility to musculoskeletal injuries. Despite the concerns for athlete health, the overall incidence of injuries continues to rise.
PURPOSE: To review current literature on common orthopedic injuries in youth ice hockey athletes with particular emphasis on mechanisms and pathology related to those dur
