Microplastics and PMT plastic-associated chemicals as co-contaminants in ice shaving waste from an urban ice rink.

Ice hockey, curling, and skating are popular recreational activities across Canada's nearly 8000 ice rinks, yet potential contamination of rink ice shaving waste remains understudied. This study investigated the presence of emerging contaminants, including microplastics and persistent, mobile, and toxic (PMT) plastic-associated chemicals as co-contaminants in ice shaving from the Mattamy Athletic Centre (formerly Maple Leaf Gardens) located in the City of Toronto. Microplastics were detected at high concentrations ranging from 59 to 2063 particles per 100 mL of melted ice shaving, with particl

A Novel Approach to Assessing Ice Skating Sprint Performance Using Wearable Sensors.

PURPOSE: This study implemented established signal processing techniques to introduce novel ice skating performance metrics using Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) in forward ice sprint tests. We hypothesized that the proposed metrics would differentiate skaters of different caliber and skating type and provide additional biomechanical information beyond traditional metrics. METHODS: Nineteen ice skaters, including high- and low-caliber hockey and figure skaters, performed maximal speed sprints, while six IMUs recorded their ice skating. Primary performance metrics included stride length, vel

Passive wheels on legged robots: a survey.

In recent years, highly dynamic robots have seen a significant rise in both consumer and research applications. Much of the focus on legged robots stems from their ability to adapt to a world built for humans, but energy inefficiency and battery capacity remain significant challenges to widespread adoption. Wheel-legged hybrid locomotion is an increasingly popular solution, as robots combine the energy efficiency and speed of wheels with the versatility and adaptability of legs. Most of the literature focuses on the actuated or active-wheel variant because it is simpler to control. However, re

Projections of the probability of the "Elfsteden" ice skating tour under future climate scenarios using lake models.

The Elfstedentocht is a culturally significant long distance ice skating tour held in Friesland, the Netherlands. The frequency of the tour has been declining over the last century due to increasingly mild winters. This study investigates the probability of an "Elfsteden" ice skating tour under different future IPCC climate scenarios: SSP1-2.6 (low emissions), SSP2-4.5 (intermediate emissions) and SSP5-8.5 (high emissions). Two different ice growth models are employed to produce projections of ice thickness for the future. The ice growth models are driven by sub-daily meteorological forcing fr

Validity and Reliability of a Radar Tracking Device in Ice Hockey Testing.

This study investigated the reliability and validity of a radar tracking device (RTD) for assessing linear sprinting (sprint) and change-of-direction (CoD) performance in ice hockey. Twenty competitive male youth ice hockey players (age: 16.35 ± 0.67 years; body mass: 72.37 ± 10.06 kg; height: 177.48 ± 5.40 cm) performed three 30-m sprints and three 10-0-5-m CoD tests on ice. Sprint and CoD performance variables, including split times, position-based times, and maximal velocity, were assessed simultaneously using the RTD and a linear encoder (LE). Correlations between systems ranged from small

Cardiorespiratory Aerobic Fitness and Repeated Sprint Ability in Elite Ice Hockey Players.

Ice hockey represents a sport with predominantly anaerobic efforts best reflected by repeated sprint ability (RSA) testing (5 × 5 s with 10 s recovery). A controversy persists about the usefulness of VO2max laboratory testing for the assessment of ice hockey players. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between laboratory-measured VO2max and RSA simulated on a supine ergometer and tested on ice. Elite male hockey players (n = 64) were tested in the laboratory (VO2max and RSA). RSA testing was performed by a modified Wingate test (5 × 5 s sprints with 10 s recovery). In 28

Contribution of Equipment to Performance: Investigating Skate Metrics and Their Relationship to Race Times in Competitive Long Track Speed Skaters.

The relationship between athletes and equipment in the sport of speed skating is critical. A speed skater's equipment, namely their skates, is an integral part of a dynamic system that facilitates the translation of human motion to on-ice racing. Although it is common practice to customize the setup of long track speed skates, empirical evidence supporting best practices is relatively undocumented. The exploratory nature of this investigation was intended to address two purposes: (i) profiling skate metrics in a competitive cohort of long track speed skaters and (ii) exploring the association

Biomechanical comparison between toe and edge jumps in figure skating: focusing on toe-loop and loop in female skaters.

In figure skating, Toe jumps have been reported to achieve greater jump height than Edge jumps. However, the biomechanical differences inherent in their associated take-off mechanisms have not yet been clarified. Therefore, the aim was to clarify the biomechanical distinctions between the triple Toe-loop (TL) and the triple Loop (LP), which share the same take-off leg. Ten female skaters performed both jumps, while three-dimensional kinematic data were collected using a marker-based optical motion-capture system. Parameters related to vertical and rotational velocities were analysed across the

Mechanical determinants of axis drift and rotational speed in figure skating jumps.

Rotational jumps are a key technical element in figure skating. Jumps with a higher number of rotations require both a stable rotational axis and higher rotational speed. However, the determinants of these requirements remain unclear. This study aims to identify the primary determinants of the reorientation of the rotational axis and rotational speed. These variables were formulated based on rigid body mechanics to identify their determinants. The formulae were then applied to on-ice jump data to identify the primary determinants among them. We report that the primary determinant of the motion

Biomechanical Variables Associated with the First 20 m of the Start Phase in Speed Skaters.

This exploratory study examined segmental biomechanical variables associated with 20 m start performance in 24 juvenile inline speed skaters (14-16 years). Athletes performed three maximal 20 m starts; the best time was recorded with photoelectric timing gates, and the corresponding trial was analyzed from two-dimensional video using Tracker. Segmental kinematics and indirect inertial estimates were derived using De Leva-adjusted anthropometric parameters. Candidate predictors were selected with LASSO, and the complete preprocessing and selection pipeline was evaluated using nested leave-one-o

Awareness of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport Among Russian Coaches Working with Athletes of Various Levels in Athletics and Short-Track Speed Skating.

Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) can adversely affect athletes' health and performance. Coaches in individual sports may help recognize warning signs and facilitate referrals, yet their awareness remains understudied, especially among high-performance professionals. A cross-sectional survey using a translated, pilot-tested, and expert-reviewed adaptation of the Lodge et al. questionnaire was conducted among 101 Russian athletics (n = 75) and short-track speed skating (n = 26) coaches. The primary outcome was self-reported prior awareness of RED-S. Among coaches reporting awareness,

Synthesis of flat, skateboard colloidal particles with triaxial asymmetry using the film deformation method.

We produce prolate ellipsoidal polymeric colloids with triaxial asymmetry, resembling the shape of a skateboard. The particles are characterized by unequal polar and equatorial semiaxes and are produced by a simple modification to the film squeezing method, which conventionally yields only biaxially symmetric spheroids. These particles contribute to the growing library of shape anisometric polymer colloids and given their unequal principal axes, they could serve as interesting building blocks for designing colloidal systems such as crystals, gels and active suspensions.
