Electro-Ribbon Actuator-Driven, Responsive Skating Robot Inspired by Water Striders.

The biomimetic water strider robot is inspired by the biological water strider and is expected to be applied in fields such as environmental monitoring and reconnaissance. However, currently biomimetic water strider robots are mainly dominated by water pressure. This often leads to severe surface interference, high power consumption, and delayed response. Here, we introduce a lightweight (1.37 g) water surface skating biomimetic water strider robot driven by an electro-ribbon actuator, which uses surface tension as the dominant force. This robot eliminates the need for a transmission system an

On the Ice and Off Balance: Craniofacial Injuries and Preventive Strategies at the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.

The Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games highlighted the persistent risk of craniofacial injuries across multiple high-velocity winter sports. This editorial reviews the most clinically relevant injury events, including a severe periorbital skate-blade trauma resulting in zygomatic fracture during short-track speed skating, as well as concussive and cervical injury patterns observed in sliding and alpine disciplines. Despite advances in protective equipment, significant vulnerabilities remain, particularly in facial protection and impact mitigation. Current standards in several sports appe

Arthroscopically Confirmed Complete Healing of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Avulsion Fracture Following Four-Corner Pullout Repair Using Ultrahigh-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene Tapes: A Case Report.

We report a case of tibial insertion avulsion fracture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). A 10-year-old boy who fell from a skateboard was diagnosed with a tibial insertion avulsion fracture of the ACL and was treated arthroscopically. The avulsed fragment was provisionally fixed with guide pins inserted into its four corners, and the lateral view was checked to avoid penetration of the growth plate. Two ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene tapes were passed through the ACL just above its tibial insertion, pulled through the four-corner bone tunnels in an X-shaped configuration, and t

Swenson, AG, Smith, CD, Cavallero, NJ, Romero, GA, Pritchard, N, Bullock, GS, Miles, CM, Mihalik, JP, Urban, JE, and Stitzel, JD. Physical performance and head impact exposure in boys' youth ice hockey. J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000-000, 2026-Evidence suggests that physical performance influences head acceleration event (HAE) exposure in collision sports, especially in youth populations undergoing physical and neuromuscular development. Concern surrounding negative effects of HAE exposure highlights a need to better understand individual-level factors that may increase propensity for HAEs. Th

The Impact of Helmet Use on Head Injury Characteristics and Medical Management Following Helmet-Relevant Activity-Associated Traumatic Brain Injury: A 2014-2021 National Trauma Data Bank Retrospective Cohort Analysis.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major global health burden, with sports and recreational activities accounting for approximately 10% of all TBI cases in the United States. Helmets are widely used to mitigate head injury risk, yet prior studies have reported conflicting associations between helmet use and specific head injury patterns, medical management, and outcomes across different helmet-relevant activities. The objective of this study is to examine the associations between helmet use and head injury characteristics, injury severity, and emergency department (ED) disposition among patient

Isolated Posterior Malleolus Fracture with Early Symptom Resolution: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) is a benign but locally aggressive neoplasm that predominantly affects the epiphyses of long bones. Pelvic involvement is uncommon, and acetabular GCTB presents particular diagnostic and therapeutic challenges because of the complex pelvic anatomy, proximity to neurovascular structures, and critical weight-bearing function of the hip. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 50-year-old female who presented with progressive left hip pain, restricted movements, and inability to bear weight following a trivial fall. Radiographs and cross-sectional imagi

Cerebral differences between roller and speed skaters: preliminary evidence for roller-to-ice talent transfer.

OBJECTIVES: Talent transfer (TT) from roller skating to speed skating is a recognized pathway for developing elite athletes. This study aimed to identify the sport-specific cerebral characteristics in these athletes by comparing their brain structure and function, thereby providing preliminary neuroimaging evidence relevant to "roller-to-ice" TT. METHODS: We acquired structural and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data from 10 national-level speed skaters and 14 roller skaters. Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) was used to assess whole-brain gray matter volume (GMV), and

Maternal metabolomic signatures for risk of preterm and early term birth in African American women.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Compared to healthy controls, adult patients with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) are anemic, and therefore have higher cardiac output and Cerebral Blood Flow (CBF) to maintain brain oxygenation. They also demonstrate comparatively more cognitive deficits due to either overt strokes or silent cerebral ischemia. However, there are few correlative studies between CBF and cognitive deficits, specifically processing speed in SCD. Such studies are important to develop biomarkers of central brain processing and ischemia for diagnosis, prognosis, and evaluating the effectiveness of

A strengthening yet less extreme Atlantic-European jet during winter.

It is known that beta-lactam antibiotics can conjugate to lysine and histidine residues on proteins via the carbonyl group of the opened beta-lactam ring. However, it is not known which proteins these drugs target and there is little work addressing whether conjugation is preferential for some proteins over others or if conjugation has functional consequences for the protein. We have previously shown that the beta-lactam antibiotic benzylpenicillin (BP) conjugates to IFN-gamma and reduces its activity. This interaction demonstrates selectivity, as BP does not bind to IL-4. Here, we extend our

On-Ice and Off-Ice Linear Sprint Performance Across Competitive Levels in Ice Hockey Players: Insights from Continuous Velocity Profiling.

Linear speed is a key performance determinant in ice hockey, yet no studies have compared continuous on-ice and off-ice velocity profiles across multiple competitive levels. This study examined continuous velocity curves and discrete sprint variables during 20 m on-ice (skating) and off-ice (running) sprints across three competitive levels. Sixty male ice hockey players (A-Team n = 20, U20A n = 20, U20B n = 20) completed maximal 20 m sprints in both conditions using a motorized resistance device. Bayesian analyses were used to evaluate continuous velocity profiles and discrete variables. Poste

Riding the shockwave: Escalating spine injuries from electric micromobility devices in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Electric micromobility vehicle (electric scooter, bicycle, hoverboard, skateboard) usage has risen significantly since the mid-2010s, and is associated with rising orthopaedic trauma. Having a narrow base, upright posture, and allowing rapid changes in velocity, these vehicles cause disproportionately more head and spinal injuries than traditional bicycles. Understanding longitudinal trends in emergency department presentations of electric micromobility vehicle related spine injuries provides clinicians with tools to anticipate cases and develop spine-injury prevention strategies a

Towards credible digital twins for basic and preclinical research.

Atomoxetine (Strattera(R)) is a selective norepinephrine (noradrenaline) reuptake inhibitor that is not classified as a stimulant, and is indicated for use in patients with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Atomoxetine is effective and generally well tolerated. It is significantly more effective than placebo and standard current therapy and does not differ significantly from or is noninferior to immediate-release methylphenidate; however, it is significantly less effective than the extended-release methylphenidate formulation OROS(R) methylphenidate (hereafter referred to as osm

Structural basis for Mg²⁺-glycine synergy in the tandem glycine riboswitch revealed by cryo-EM.

Part I of this article discussed the potential functional importance of genetic mutations and alleles of the human cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) gene. The impact of CYP2D6 polymorphisms on the clearance of and response to a series of cardiovascular drugs was addressed. Since CYP2D6 plays a major role in the metabolism of a large number of other drugs, Part II of the article highlights the impact of CYP2D6 polymorphisms on the response to other groups of clinically used drugs. Although clinical studies have observed a gene-dose effect for some tricyclic antidepressants, it is difficult to establ

Talent Identification: Time to Move Forward on Estimation of Potentials? Proposed Explanations and Promising Methods.

The scientific literature on talent identification is extensive, with significant advancements made over the past 30 years. However, as with any field, the translation of research into practice and its impact on the field have been slower than anticipated. Indeed, recent findings highlight a pervasive relative age effect, the effects of maturation being often overlooked, disparate populations between young and senior performers, and a necessity to embrace a holistic approach. However, simple elements can be implemented to avoid some of these known biases. This review synthesizes recent advance
