Determinants of Sleep and Morning Alertness in Elite Short-Track Speed Skaters During the Preseason.

PURPOSE: Sleep in elite athletes could be compromised by stressors such as high training volumes and mediated by factors related to individual characteristics and training schedule. However, longitudinal real-world data capturing the factors influencing sleep in elite athletes remain scarce. We aimed to determine what predicts sleep quantity, sleep quality, and morning cognitive readiness in elite speed skaters of the Canadian short-track World Cup team. METHODS: In the beginning of the preseason period, 16 athletes (7 women) completed the Sleep Health Index, the Insomnia Severity Index quest

Quantitative analysis of angular momentum generation in the triple loop in figure skating.

Whole-body Angular momentum (AM) is a key factor for jump execution and landing stability in figure skating. However, its generation mechanism in the triple loop (T-LP) remain underexplored. The aim of this study was to address this gap by analysing the segmental contributions to angular momentum generation. Ten female skaters performed the T-LP while undergoing three-dimensional motion analysis. Although the AM increased first due to the contribution of the upper limbs during the glide phase, the AM of the lower limbs increased more significantly during the transition phase, with a particular

Effects of different types of structured physical activity courses on gross motor development in preschool children: a 12-week comparative intervention study.

BACKGROUND: Structured physical activity courses can effectively enhance preschool children's motor skill development, and the type of activity may influence intervention outcomes. However, few studies have compared different courses, leaving educators without clear guidance for selecting effective interventions. This study examined the effects of three 12-week structured physical activity courses on the gross motor development of children aged 3-6, providing empirical evidence for intervention strategies. METHODS: A three-group quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design was adopted. Forty-fi

Reviving the forgotten: breathing life into urban wastelands through skateboarding and decolonial placemaking in Nairobi, Kenya.

Skateboarding in Nairobi, Kenya, offers young people ways of asserting subjectivity, reimagining the city through movement, care, and shared presence. Based on semi-structured interviews, field observations, and sensory ethnography, this study traces how skateboarders transform overlooked sites-plazas, rooftops, and improvised parks-into spaces of community building, ecological care, and affective belonging. Grounded in decolonial thought, Indigenous teachings, and feminist ethics of care, the analysis frames skateboarding as a collective practice through which personhood is shaped, care for c

Mutual calibration estimation of dynamic states and static parameters for skateboard chassis vehicle.

The non-fixed coupling between skateboard chassis and superstructures leads to significant challenges in accurate vehicle dynamic state estimation. To address this issue, this paper proposes a mutual calibration estimation method. First, the nonlinear 7-DOF vehicle dynamic model is established as the foundation for the mutual calibration framework. Then, a novel calibrated forgetting factor recursive least squares (C-FFRLS) estimator is developed within the dynamic-static parameters mutual calibration framework, which can estimate vehicle mass and center of gravity (CoG) position while computi

A machine learning based framework for identifying consumer product injuries from social media data.

BACKGROUND: Safety is a critical aspect of consumer products. However, there are millions of product related injuries reported each year. Traditional injury surveillance efforts led by public health agencies involve product related injury data collection from hospitals and subsequent injury causation analysis. This approach often requires long processing time and leads to delays in identifying emergent consumer product-related injury patterns and preventive intervention steps such as product recalls, which causes continued product related injuries. METHODS: We propose a machine learning (ML)

Autoregulated macro-microcycle training enhances physiological reserve and adaptability in competitive speed skaters.

BACKGROUND: The personalization of training is one of the main pillars of performance science, but multidomain reserve modelling based on aerobic, neuromuscular, and autonomic systems remains under-researched. Unlike fixed-load models, the approach uses real-time heart rate variability (HRV) and performance load ratio (PLR) feedback to tune training and recovery, offering a new, evidence-based approach to maintaining the adaptive potential of speed skating. This study tested whether an autoregulated macro–microcycle using readiness signals improves physiological reserve versus volume-matched c

Timing-based strategies to minimize the impact of long-haul travel on sleep: A pilot study in elite athletes traveling for competition.

Long-haul travel poses significant challenges to sleep in elite athletes, yet evidence-based interventions tested in competitive settings remain scarce. This study investigated the effects of timing-based interventions on sleep in 10 national-level Canadian speed skaters prior to a World Cup competition in Beijing (13 time zones crossed). Athletes followed a tailored sleep schedule upon arrival and for the days preceding the competition. Total sleep time in Beijing was not different from Canada (p = 0.254) or pre-season (p = 0.999) and was lower the night before travel (p < 0.001) due to the e
