A Research Note on the Demographic Potential of Polygyny: Evaluating an Age-Related Summary Indicator.

This research note discusses one underexplored aspect of the study of polygyny, namely, the extent to which the practice remains viable from a purely demographic standpoint. Using data from the United Nations World Population Prospects 2022 covering 48 countries in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), I evaluate a simple indicator-gamma-for capturing the "demographic potential" of polygyny, that is, the fraction of men who can have two wives with no other man pushed out of the marriage market. I estimate how this indicator has evolved between 1950 and 2021 across regions of SSA and show how the measure c

Age-related redistribution of zinc and copper within human skin.

BACKGROUND: The skin's natural functions rely on essential metals such as zinc and copper, which contribute to cell growth, differentiation, and apoptosis. With ageing, low-grade inflammation (inflammaging) develops, and zinc deficiency in skin becomes more common. Data on the distribution of these metals in human skin are limited and there is no information on how the distribution changes with age. OBJECTIVES: Establishing the spatial distribution of zinc and copper in human skin is a first step towards addressing their functions in specific cell layers and skin structures. METHODS: Laser a

Modeling the effect of substrate topography on cellular and nuclear deformations.

As they navigate complex extracellular environments, cells and their nuclei undergo extensive deformation. Recent experiments have demonstrated that vascular endothelial cells cultured on microgroove substrates, which mimic the anisotropic topography of the basement membrane, exhibit complex nuclear deformations, leading to partial or even complete nuclear penetration into the microgrooves. Interestingly, the experiments suggest that nuclear entry into the microgrooves is driven mainly by cellular adhesion and spreading rather than by cytoskeleton-mediated pulling and/or pushing forces. In the

Divergent effects of high-frequency rTMS on cognitive performance in sleep-deprived nurses: An EEG brain network study.

BACKGROUND: Sleep deprivation (SD) is a common occupational hazard, particularly for shift workers like nurses, leading to significant impairments in cognitive functions such as sustained attention and working memory. High-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a promising neuromodulation technique for cognitive enhancement, but its effects in sleep-deprived individuals and the underlying neural mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of high-frequency rTMS over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in modulating sus

Wellbeing vs competency? Debunking the false dichotomy in medical education.

Numerous studies have shown that medical learners experience poorer wellbeing than their counterparts in the general population. Over the last decade, medical learner wellbeing has become front-of-mind for educators and administrators, which has helped drive systematic improvements in learning and working environments. However, as awareness has grown on the importance of learner wellbeing, a parallel narrative has emerged that questions whether these initiatives are impacting the development of medical competency. In this article, the authors argue that the false dichotomy of wellbeing vs comp

Histopathologic growth patterns as prognostic factor for survival in patients with colorectal liver metastases.

BACKGROUND: Histopathologic growth patterns (HGPs) of colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) have emerged as potential prognostic biomarkers, though their clinical significance remains under investigation. The objective is to evaluate the prognostic value of HGPs on recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) in patients undergoing liver resection for CRLM. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of the OSLO-COMET randomized controlled trial, where 280 patients underwent laparoscopic or open parenchyma-sparing liver resection for CRLM between February 2012 and Februar

Modulating implicit food-related tendencies via repetitive TMS of the intraparietal sulcus. A proof-of-concept study for a novel therapeutic target in eating disorders.

AIM: Implicit approach-avoidance biases toward food play a key role in eating behaviors and may contribute to the development and maintenance of eating disorders. Yet, the neural mechanisms underlying these automatic responses remain poorly understood. The intraparietal sulcus (IPS) has been implicated in sensorimotor integration and goal-directed action, suggesting a role in regulating food-related behavioural biases. OBJECTIVE: This proof-of-concept study aimed to investigate the causal role of the IPS in modulating implicit food-related approach-avoidance bias through low-frequency repetit

"I Remained Half a Person": The Phenomenology of Twin Loss Among Combat Soldiers in the Iron Swords War.

This study examines the phenomenological experience of 20 twin-combatants who lost their twin brother or sister in the "Iron Swords" War (October 2023 onwards) under conditions of ongoing trauma. Through the prism of "Disenfranchised Grief" and Reflexive Thematic Analysis, the research analyzes the tension between the somatic-identity experience and the warrior ethos and moral covenant. Three central themes were identified: "The Body as the Arena of Trauma," which includes somatic synchronization; "The Collapse of the We," dealing with the loss of dyadic identity; and a distinct axis of "The B

Respiratory and Cardiac Phase Coupling With Voluntary Actions Across Motor Tasks.

Bodily rhythms such as breathing and heartbeat influence perception and motor processes. Recent studies have indicated that breathing phases, particularly exhalation, synchronize with voluntary actions, potentially reflecting a general influence on motor intention. However, this effect might depend on the specific effector and movement direction. This study aimed to investigate (i) respiratory synchronization across different voluntary motor tasks, (ii) the interaction between stimulus-locked and action-locked respiratory coupling, and (iii) cardiac synchronization with voluntary actions. A to

Beyond sieving: A review on active ion recognition via interfacial nanoarchitecture for selective lithium recovery.

To address the impending lithium supply crisis, membrane-based extraction from salt-lake brines has emerged as a pivotal area of research in the field of critical metals. Traditional polymeric membranes demonstrate limited Li+/Mg2+ selectivity and suffer from rapid degradation in highly saline, alkaline brines where the Mg/Li mass ratio exceeds 40. This review provides a systematic analysis of how precision membrane surface engineering strategies have advanced separation capabilities of lithium over the past decade. Specifically, (i) the angstrom-scale narrowing of interlayer nanochannels in l

Bacterial Outer Membrane Vesicles in Potentiating Cancer Vaccines: Progress and Prospects.

Cancer immunotherapy is increasingly moving toward personalized, precision-based strategies, with cancer vaccines emerging as a promising approach to reshape treatment. However, despite their potential, current tumor vaccines often yield limited clinical responses and subpar immunogenicity, underscoring the urgent need for innovative delivery systems to enhance immune activation. Bacterial outer membrane vesicles (OMVs), which possess natural immunomodulatory properties and impressive engineering flexibility, have attracted attention as versatile platforms for vaccine development and bioengine

Measuring competing motivations: Motivational conflict evokes rapid shifts in asymmetrical frontal alpha power and LPP amplitudes.

Motivational conflict occurs when an individual faces a situation involving competing drives to approach or avoid. Past work using ERPs and resting frontal alpha asymmetry has demonstrated that avoidance motivation and approach-avoid conflict evoke greater relative right frontal cortical activity. However, although they show similar findings, these separate literatures have not been connected. The current study attempted to fill this gap by measuring lateral differences in time domain ERPs and evoked time-frequency alpha (8-12 Hz) power during motivated movements. Participants (N = 71) complet

A Qualitative Analysis of Multi-level Influences on Chronic Pain among Spanish-speaking Older Latino Adults in a Community Clinic in the United States.

Spanish-speaking older Latino adults living with chronic musculoskeletal pain in the United States (US) experience worse pain outcomes than English-speaking and non-Latino older adults. This is partly because most pain interventions have been designed and tested primarily among English-speaking individuals. To address this, existing interventions for chronic musculoskeletal pain should be tailored to reflect the multilayered factors that impact and are impacted by chronic pain identified by Spanish-speaking older Latino adults. As such, we conducted three focus groups and five individual inter

Top of the license practice or out of our scope? A qualitative analysis of social workers' role in cultivating prognostic awareness on hospital palliative care teams.

OBJECTIVE: Prognostic awareness, defined as patients’ understanding of their illness trajectory and likely prognosis, is an essential component of informed decision-making, values-based care planning, and high-quality palliative care. Although discussing prognosis is traditionally viewed as a physician-led task, palliative social workers (PSWs) are often involved in interventions that require prognostic understanding. Little is known, however, about the role social workers play in cultivating prognostic awareness, the professional boundaries surrounding prognostic discussions, and how PSWs’ en

Interpretable Machine Learning Identifies Key Inflammatory and Morphological Drivers of Intracranial Aneurysm Rupture Risk.

Traditional statistical approaches identify group-level associations between biomarkers and rupture status in intracranial aneurysms (IAs) but often miss nonlinear interactions at the patient level. Methods: The authors retrospectively analyzed 35 saccular IAs in 35 patients (57.1% ruptured) from a single center (2021-2023). Demographics, detailed morphology (e.g., neck width, aspect ratio, VERTI, irregular shape), and multi-site inflammatory/immune markers (CRP; complement C3/C4; IgA/IgG/IgM) were included. After preprocessing (min-max scaling; one-hot encoding), five algorithms (DT, AdaBoost

Three-year-old children understand the false beliefs of their partner in collaborative decision making.

Classic false-belief tasks may be confusing because children converse with someone who knows that a situation has changed about a third person who does not know this. Two studies used a collaborative false-belief task in which US- and UK-based 3-year-olds (N = 84, 48 girls, data collection: 2023) and a partner had to jointly decide in which box a toy was hidden. Children informed their partner and provided reasons about the location of the toy more when their partner had a false belief than when they had a true belief. We discuss the hypothesis that collaborative decision making pushes childre

Evaluating routing stability and coordination in swarm-based multi-agent task-oriented dialogue systems.

Conversational systems are becoming a primary interface for services and enterprise automation, and rapid market growth is pushing deployments into safety- and cost-sensitive settings. Reliability remains a bottleneck when interactions span multiple domains: an orchestrator must choose the next specialist, maintain shared dialogue state, and recover from mistakes before they cascade across handoffs. Despite rising interest in swarm-like multi-agent designs, orchestration is rarely evaluated with coordination-centric metrics, making it hard to compare routing policies beyond surface fluency. We

Behavioral contagion leads the brain functional network towards a more balanced state.

Behavioral contagion is defined as the tendency of individuals to conform with others' behavior after observing them. Despite the important role that behavioral contagion plays in societies, its brain mechanism is still not fully understood. In this study, we hypothesized that the brain functional network rearranges its regional associations in a way to achieve a more stable state after behavioral contagion. Therefore, the stability of the brain network before and after observing others' choices (preferences) was assessed using structural balance theory (SBT) on the fMRI data. For this purpose
