Single-molecule fluorescence spectroscopy of fast protein dynamics.

Single-molecule experiments have become an integral part of modern structural biology. Unlike other methods, single-molecule Förster resonance energy transfer (smFRET) spectroscopy opens direct access to distance-based temporal trajectories of protein motions. Recent innovations in analysing smFRET experiments with correlation and photon-trajectory based methods have pushed the time resolution of dynamics to much faster than milliseconds. Here, we review these methods, together with their most recent applications and their impact on our understanding of the function of proteins. Important curr

Development of a multi-channel diffusive sampling system for the analysis of Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds in the vapor phase using TD-GC/MS.

BACKGROUND: The tendency of SVOCs to partition between the vapor and particulate phases influences the reaction kinetics of these pollutants, pushing for the development of selective sampling systems. Traditional methods like filters and adsorbents have limited accuracy in describing the distribution of SVOCs due to sampling artifacts, such as analyte stripping during active air sampling. This distinction is crucial for designing pollutant abatement systems in industrial settings and developing collective and individual protection devices against airborne chemical agents. RESULTS: This study

The Global Impact of Specialized Aesthetic Fellowship Training: An International Multi-Center Evaluation of the ISAPS Aesthetic Surgery Fellowship.

BACKGROUND: Structured aesthetic surgery training during residency is often inadequate, creating a global training gap. The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) established a fellowship program to address this, but its educational impact has not been systematically evaluated. This study provides the first multicenter, international analysis of the ISAPS fellowship's effect on procedural exposure, surgeon confidence, and career trajectory. METHODS: An online survey was distributed to all surgeons who had completed an ISAPS fellowship. The questionnaire captured demographi

Midwives' Perspectives on a Program Supporting Spontaneous Pushing During the Second Stage of Labor: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal pushing during the second stage of labor plays a critical role to labor progression, with professional guidelines recommend supporting a natural, "spontaneous" approach to pushing. Midwives are key to facilitating this practice; however, there is limited of evidence regarding their perceptions of spontaneous pushing. This study was designed to explore midwives' perceptions of a program that supported a woman's spontaneous pushing during labor. METHOD: This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach using individual semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed usi

Pushing the experimental resolution boundary in chromatin fibre organisation using multiscale simulations.

The multiscale organisation of chromatin arises from the interplay of intermolecular interactions, physical constraints, and the physicochemical properties of the nuclear environment. These processes span a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. At the scale of a few angstroms, atomic interactions between histone residues, DNA, metabolites, and solvent molecules occur on picosecond to nanosecond timescales. At the nanometre scale, nucleosomes and their arrays undergo conformational changes, sliding, and breathing motions on microsecond to millisecond timescales. At the micrometre scale, ch

Does love in the ivory tower fix the leaky pipeline? How academia's homogamous relationships shape careers.

The persistent "leaky pipeline", i.e., women remaining underrepresented in advanced academic roles, often links to the adverse impact of parenthood on women's careers compared to men's. This study delves into how the struggle to balance academic success and family life might be pushing female scientists out of academia, and how the less-studied concept of homogamy-here, the forming of heterosexual relationships between individuals with the same profession-influences academic careers. Drawing on data from the 2021 "Academic career, partnership, and family" survey by swissuniversities, this rese

Intraoperative Indocyanine Green Fluorescence Enables Primary Tumor Localization and Treatment De-Escalation in SCCUP: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Unknown primary cancer in the head and neck presents a difficult surgical treatment dilemma. Patients with squamous cell carcinoma of unknown primary (SCCUP) typically present with an enlarging neck mass found on biopsy but with no indication of primary site on diagnostic exams such as flexible laryngoscopy, CT, MRI, and/or PET/CT. Failure to identify primary sites eliminates surgical treatment as an option, pushing patients toward definitive chemoradiation with associated side effects. METHODS: Indocyanine green (ICG) has been used to identify primary carcinoma in known oropharyn

Relationship Between Histopathological Growth Patterns and Indocyanine Green Fluorescence in Colorectal Liver Metastases.

BACKGROUND/AIM: In colorectal liver metastases (CRLM), peritumoral indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence has traditionally been attributed to cholestasis caused by compression of the surrounding liver parenchyma; however, the mechanisms underlying ICG retention remain incompletely understood. Histopathological growth patterns (HGPs) represent distinct modes of tumor-liver interaction and may therefore influence ICG fluorescence characteristics. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between ICG fluorescence patterns and HGPs in CRLM. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective study inc

[Simulated consciousness, pseudo-empathy and the illusion of attachment: what can psychiatry do with artificial intelligence?].

Over the past decade, the burden of mental disorders has grown while services remain capacity-constrained, pushing generative artificial intelligence toward psychiatric practice. This narrative review outlines how large language and multimodal models work and where they fail (hallucinations, goal drift, model drift), then appraises the evidence across diagnosis, therapy, and ethical-social implications. We review decision support based on digital phenotyping, clinical text, speech analysis, and wearable sensors, and summarize short-term findings and limitations of protocol-based and generative

Impact of out-of-pocket health expenditure on poverty in India.

As per the World Bank Poverty and Inequality Platform (2021), approximately 12.92% of India's population was below the poverty line in 2018, based on the international poverty line of $2.15 per day (PPP 2017). According to the National Health Authority (NHA) Estimates for 2018-19, the out-of-pocket health expenditure (OOPHE) share of total health expenditure (THE) was reported as 48.2% for the entire population, a decline from 64.2% in 2013-14. Thus, OOPHE is a major reason pushing households into poverty. Therefore, we seek to estimate the impact of OOPHE on poverty in India. We use data from

Weighing first- and second-hand information: How children and adults evaluate sources of moral and factual knowledge across two cultures.

How do children and adults decide when to think for themselves and when to rely on others? In two cross-cultural experiments (N = 424), I ask whether children and adults value independent thinking over dependence on testimony when evaluating how others justify moral and empirical beliefs. In Study 1, 4- and 6-year-old children and adults in the United States and China evaluated two reasoners who made the same moral judgments (e.g., pushing others is wrong), but one showed independence in her thinking, and the other relied on another person's testimony. Adults in both cultures preferred the ind

Long-Term Care Insurance and Catastrophic Health Spending at the End of Life Among Older Adults: Evidence From China.

End-of-life (EOL) health spending imposes catastrophic financial burdens on elderly households, pushing them into poverty without corresponding improvements in health outcomes. Leveraging the quasi-experiment of China's public long-term care insurance (LTCI) pilot program, this study employs data from the China Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey to examine the impact of LTCI on catastrophic health spending (CHS) at the end of life. The findings indicate that over the 5-year EOL period, LTCI significantly decreases the probability of CHS by approximately 36.1-52.3 percentage points and reduc

Preventive Implication of Ergonomic Hazard Exposures and Associated Factors Among Hospitals Cleaners in Ethiopia.

Cleaning industry is the place where the labor intensive, and high prevalence of ergonomic hazard exposures (EHE) were reported among hospital cleaners particularly in low-middle income countries. However, only few studies were conducted in eastern Ethiopia on preventive implication of EHE and its associated factors among hospital cleaners, which was the aim of this study. A hospital based cross section study design was conducted on 741 hospital cleaners from May to August 2023 in Ethiopia. Face-to-face interview was conducted. The study outcome, EHE was assessed by Nordic Questionaries. Data

Squirting Scripts: Navigating Validation, Avoidance, Desire, and Coercion in Sexual Encounters Between Women and Men.

Female ejaculation, commonly referred to as squirting, is the emission of fluid during sexual arousal or orgasm. Although increasingly recognized as a relatively common experience, scientific debate continues regarding the nature and origin of the expelled fluid. Furthermore, squirting remains underexplored in relation to women's own perspectives, particularly concerning the interpersonal negotiation and partners' responses. This study investigated cisgender women's experiences of responses from men as sexual partners to squirting, aiming to conceptualize the interpersonal meanings of squirtin

RAFT enables controlled radical ring-opening polymerisation of cyclic ketene acetals for degradable nanoparticles.

Following the demand for biodegradable polymers in biomedicine and cosmetics, the radical ring-opening polymerisation (RROP) of cyclic ketene acetals (CKAs) offers a robust synthesis approach to prepare a wide range of polyesters. Here we demonstrate a method to control the RROP of 2-methylene-1,3,6-trioxocane (MTC) in terms of molar mass, dispersity, end-group control and kinetics using the reversible addition and fragmentation chain transfer polymerisation (RAFT) methodology. Fine-tuning the ratio between the reactants allows for a better understanding of the interplay of RAFT and RROP. With

Exploiting prior knowledge in continuous decision-making under uncertainty: the case of tennis experts.

Leading theories of sensorimotor control propose that humans navigate uncertainty by integrating prior and sensory information in a Bayesian manner. However, empirical evidence is largely limited to static and constrained lab tasks. How humans exploit prior knowledge during continuously unfolding decision-making in naturalistic behavior remains unclear. Here, we study a task that pushes the human sensorimotor system to its limits: returning fast tennis serves. This task is particularly informative for gaining insights into the dynamics of unfolding decisions in action, owing to a distinct feat

Collaborative reasoning and problem-solving in early childhood.

A core aspect of human intelligence is the ability to reason. Recently, the social dimension of reasoning has been emphasized such that reasoning enables people to justify their beliefs/proposals to collectively solve problems, in which the goal of the participants is to reach the decision that provides most benefit to all. An important debate in the literature is whether collaborative reasoning leads to good/optimal decisions. Here, we contrast these traditional and social views on reasoning and review the evidence on whether individuals benefit from collective reasoning in a special populati

Perceptions of being grandparents of children living with type 1 diabetes in Sweden: a qualitative interview study.

AIM: This study aimed to describe the perceptions of being grandparents of a grandchild living with type 1 diabetes. INTRODUCTION: When a child develops a lifelong condition, it affects the whole family, and caring for a child with chronic illness can be stressful. This ongoing stress can impact family relationships. In addition to parents, siblings and grandparents are often among the first to learn about the child's condition and may be the initial source of support. METHODS: Individual interviews were conducted with 11 grandparents from northern Sweden who met the inclusion criteria of ha
