Data-driven framework for adverse manual wheelchair event risk classification and prevention.

Manual wheelchairs are frequently associated with adverse incidents such as component failures, falls, and injuries. Despite existing research, there is a lack of systematic frameworks to identify high-risk scenarios and root causes across different wheelchair models. This study integrates Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) with natural language processing (NLP) to generate a risk classification framework and propose guidelines to reduce risks. We analysed 752 adverse incidents reported by NHS WestMARC from 2020 to 2025. Events were categorised by five manual wheelchair models: standard,

Designing for the Intersection of Aging and Disability: Application of the TechSAge Technology Intervention Model.

As people live longer with disabilities acquired early in life, the additive effects of aging create unique challenges at the intersection of aging and disability. Technology interventions can minimize barriers and create facilitators to support performance of activities integral to health and quality of life. The absence of a theoretical framework to guide such interventions, in either gerontology or rehabilitation, created gaps in the knowledge base required to meet the needs of these individuals. We proposed the TechSAge Technology Intervention Model (TechSAge-TIM) to support activity engag

Medical management of musculoskeletal pain in professional wheelchair basketball players: an evidence-based guide.

Wheelchair basketball (WB) has evolved from a recreational activity to an internationally recognized sport. It is useful in enhancing psychophysical well-being in athletes with disabilities. However, WB professional players' medical management, especially regarding musculoskeletal pain (MSP), poses unique challenges and the related scientific literature still seems fragmentary. An extensive review of the PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase databases was performed to identify the available evidence regarding the medical management of WB players MSP. It emerges that WB players often face musculoskeleta

Inclusive crowd evacuation modeling under heterogeneous mobility constraints.

Emergency evacuations in built environments pose significant challenges for individuals with disabilities, yet traditional simulation models often fail to account for heterogeneous mobility needs. While considerable advances have been made in pedestrian dynamic modeling, a critical gap persists in the realistic incorporation of disability-specific movement limitations and environmental barriers. This paper presents an inclusive evacuation simulation framework based on an extended social force model, explicitly integrating wheelchair users and visually impaired individuals. The model modifies a

Interactions during falls with environmental objects: evidence from real-life falls in long-term care captured on video.

BACKGROUND: Falls are the leading cause of injuries in older adults. Environmental objects (such as furniture, walls, and handrails) may act as hazards or facilitators to balance maintenance and safe landing. There is lack of objective evidence on how older adults interact with objects during falls. We addressed this gap by characterizing body part contacts with objects other than the floor during real-life falls in long-term care. METHODS: We analyzed videos of 1759 falls experienced by 584 residents to characterize the prevalence of contacts with objects before, during, and after fall initi

Description of the Molecular and Phenotypic Spectrum of Lesch-Nyhan Disease in Eight Chinese Patients.

Background: Lesch-Nyhan disease (LND) is a rare disorder involving pathogenic variants in the HPRT1 gene encoding the enzyme hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (HGPRT) that result in hyperuricemia, intellectual disability, dystonic movement disorder, and compulsive self-mutilation. The purpose of the present study was to characterize the genetic basis of LND and describe its phenotypic heterogeneity by identifying the variation in the HPRT1 gene in a cohort of Chinese LND patients. Results: The median age at diagnosis was 31 mo (interquartile range (IQR): 7-76 mo), and the initial

Geriatric Care in the Community Setting: Assessment and Management of Fall Risk and Impaired Mobility.

Falls are the leading cause of injury among patients 65 years and older in the United States. Many falls are preventable, and clinicians can help patients reduce the risk of falls. This involves screening for fall risk, assessing for modifiable risk factors, and implementing evidence-based interventions for prevention. Screening for fall risk is required as part of the Welcome to Medicare visit and Annual Wellness Visits. Screening involves asking patients if they have had 2 or more falls in the past 12 months, if they are presenting because of an acute fall, and if they have difficulty with w

Deaths associated with wheelchairs.

As lethal events associated with wheelchair use are poorly reported in the literature, a search was undertaken of the Forensic Science South Australia (FSSA), Australia, autopsy database over a 20-year period for all cases where individuals who were wheelchair bound were found dead either in or beside their chairs. There were 16 cases, ranging in age from 30 to 92 years (M = 58.6 years) and with a male-to-female ratio of 9:7. There were six accidents that involved burns, asphyxia, a fall and impact with a vehicle; three suicides that involved drowning and asphyxia; a single homicide involving

Perspectives of wheelchair users with spinal cord injury on fall circumstances and fall prevention: A mixed methods approach using photovoice.

INTRODUCTION: Wheelchair users with spinal cord injury are at a high risk of falls. However, the perspectives of wheelchair users with spinal cord injury on their fall circumstances and their preferences for fall prevention strategies/interventions remain understudied. Therefore, we aimed to: a) describe the circumstances of falls experienced by wheelchair users with spinal cord injury over a six-month period, b) explore their perspectives of why falls occurred in certain situations, and c) explore their perspectives on recommended content/structure of fall prevention strategies/interventions.

Manner of Death Certification After Significant Emotional Stress: An Inter-Rater Variability Study and Review of the Literature.

Not commonly seen, the risk of sudden death after significant emotional stress has been reported since antiquity and incorporated into folk wisdom, reflected by phrases such as "scared to death" and "broken heart." A typical "victim" suffers from significant and often life-threatening natural diseases, making determination of the manner of death complicated, and at times controversial. The present study is designed to assess inter-rater variability and nonuniformity and controversy seen in manner of death certification in certain cases of death with significant stress involved in the circumsta
