Systemic and regional haemodynamic profile of captopril in conscious rabbits with bilateral cellophane perinephritis hypertension.

The radioactive microsphere technique was used to study the systemic and regional haemodynamic effects of the converting enzyme inhibitor captopril (0.1, 0.3 and 1.0 mg/kg) 10 min after intravenous administration in conscious rabbits with bilateral cellophane perinephritis hypertension, an experimental model of hypertension associated with normal plasma renin levels. Captopril lowered arterial blood pressure as a result of a dose-dependent decrease in total peripheral resistance. The fall in blood pressure was accompanied by an increase in cardiac output after the second and third dose of capt

Mechanism of action of vasoconstrictor responses to atriopeptin II in conscious SHR.

Previous studies have demonstrated that infusion of synthetic atriopeptin II (AP II) lowered arterial pressure, reduced regional blood flow, and increased total peripheral and regional vascular resistances in conscious spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). This study was designed to examine the mechanism(s) involved in regional vasoconstrictor responses to AP II. In these experiments, hemodynamic actions of AP II were examined in control, 6-hydroxydopamine-treated (chemically sympathectomized), and renal-denervated groups of instrumented conscious SHR. Infusion of AP II (1 microgram X kg-1 X

Cerebrovascular responses to haemorrhagic hypotension in anaesthetized cats. Effects of alpha-adrenoceptor antagonists.

Haemorrhagic hypotension induces the phenomenon of cerebrovascular autoregulation and, concomitantly, involves an activation of the sympathetic nervous system. As brain vessels in cats have an atypical adrenoceptor distribution we studied the effects of an alpha-adrenoceptor antagonist on the autoregulatory response to haemorrhage. Cortical blood flow was studied by the H2 technique in chloralose-anaesthetized cats subjected to a period of graded haemorrhage over 3 h. Three groups of cats were studied: control, i.e. those receiving saline (n = 10); yohimbine-treated (200 micrograms . kg-1 . h-

Cosleeping in urban families with young children in the United States.

The prevalence and correlates of sleeping in the parental bed among healthy children between 6 months and 4 years of age are described. One hundred fifty children were enrolled in an interview study on the basis of "well-child" care appointments in representative pediatric facilities. The sample created was similar in demographic characteristics to census data for the Cleveland area. In this cross section of families in a large US city, cosleeping was a routine and recent practice in 35% of white and 70% of black families. Cosleeping in both racial groups was associated with approaches to slee

Leukotriene D4 and the cerebral vasculature in vivo and in vitro.

The effects of leukotriene D4 (LTD4), a component of the slow reacting substance of anaphylaxis (SRS-A), and the putative SRS-A antagonist FPL 55712 were studied on cerebral arteries in vivo and in vitro. Intracarotid injection of LTD4 (1-15 nmols/kg) into the cerebral vasculature of the anaesthetised rat constricted internal and external carotid, facio-lingual and stapedial arteries for up to 40 minutes. LTD4 at 3 nmol/kg caused a slight fall in heart rate, and at 6 and 12 nmol/kg, an increase in diastolic (but not systolic) blood pressure was observed. In some experiments, constriction was f

Transcapillary refill in hemorrhage and shock.

Moderate or major hemorrhage leads to diminished cardiac output and to increased total peripheral resistance. These cannot be corrected fully until blood volume is restored, which, in the absence of therapy, requires the movement of fluid and of protein from the interstitium into the capillaries. This movement appears mediated entirely by changes in the Starling forces, dominated in the first phase by a fall in capillary hydrostatic pressure, which promotes a rapid shift of protein-free fluid from the interstitium into the capillaries. The second phase, temporally overlapping the initial phase

Pediatric Lisfranc injury: "bunk bed" fracture.

A common pediatric fracture is often overlooked due to the subtle deformity of the proximal first metatarsal. The injury is produced during a fall from a height, resulting in a flexion force that wedges the oblique first cuneiform-first metatarsal epiphysis into the first metatarsal-second metatarsal interspace. The injury is more severe than indicated by the bone injury, in that ligaments are involved in subluxation. Anatomic features of the first metatarsal-first cuneiform area present a suitable site for the described injury to occur. The pathogenesis of adult Lisfranc tarsometatarsal dislo

Blood banking in the small hospital.

This represents an attempt to briefly outline the type of blood bank and transfusion service we at Montrose Memorial Hospital have developed and utilized to supply our blood needs. Basically it is a system based on a fairly large list of known, pretested, and available donors who can be contacted quickly to supply blood upon demand. Only bare minimum stock supplies are maintained. The major problem is waste of blood, but Montrose experience continues to fall below the average for rural areas. Although the starting and maintaining of this walking blood bank was and is a complicated involved, an

Cardiovascular and behavioral effects of intracisternal 6-hydroxydopamine in the rabbit.

Acute effects of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA, 400--900 microgram kg-1 intracisternally, i.c.i.) consisted of bradycardia and hypertension, maximal 2--3 h after injection and preceded after some doses by a phase of hypotension. This pattern was obtained in completely conscious rabbits and after propanidid and sodium pentobarbitone anesthesia. After 600 microgram kg-1 i.c.i. 6-OHDA the peak rise in blood pressure (25 +/- 3.8 mm Hg) was due to a rise in peripheral resistance involving particularly renal and intestinal beds. Suprapontine mechanisms contributed to both hypertension and bradycardia. G

Effect of indomethacin on pulmonary vasomotor response in patients with mitral stenosis.

In 10 patients with mitral stenosis, ingestion of 125 mg indomethacin over a 24-h period had no effect on the elevated pressure in pulmonary artery. It did, however, in all patients, slightly potentiate a fall in pulmonary pressure induced by breathing of 100% oxygen. The results do not suggest that a prostaglandin mechanism is involved in chronic pulmonary vasoconstriction or that this mechanism is responsible for acute vasodilatation of the pulmonary bed induced by oxygen inhalation.

Unstable angina pectoris.

Unstable angina is a syndrome which comprises a spectrum of symptomatic manifestations of coronary artery disease which lies between stable angina pectoris and acute myocardial infarction. Patients fall into three groups: angina of recent onset (4 weeks), angina of changing pattern, and angina occurring at rest (longer than 15 minutes). The syndrome may presage acute myocardial infarction or sudden death, or may itself be the manifestation of a myocardial infarction. The pathophysiology may involve primary cardiac events or extracardiac precipitating factors, and does not appear to be the cons

[Coxarthrosis due to contusion].

Can a contusion cause coxarthrosis in the absence of both fracture and dislocation? Yes. To demonstrate this the authors report 6 cases that fulfil the following conditions: (1) Simple but violent contusion affecting the greater trochanter or the knee (dashboard accident) or a forced movement, such as in doing the splits; (2) immediate or slightly delayed pain, generally of short duration (a few weeks); (3) absence of coxarthrogenic malformations and absence of pre-existing signs of a pathological hip condition; (4) progressive coxarthrosis on the side of the contusion; (5) chronological relat
