BACKGROUND: Falls are the leading cause of injuries in older adults. Environmental objects (such as furniture, walls, and handrails) may act as hazards or facilitators to balance maintenance and safe landing. There is lack of objective evidence on how older adults interact with objects during falls. We addressed this gap by characterizing body part contacts with objects other than the floor during real-life falls in long-term care.
METHODS: We analyzed videos of 1759 falls experienced by 584 residents to characterize the prevalence of contacts with objects before, during, and after fall initi

AIM: Falls in infants are a common cause of injury. Compared to older children, infants under age one are likely to have distinctive causation and injury patterns, as they are pre-mobile or have limited independent mobility and falls are more directly the responsibility of the care giver. There is little known about the mechanistic factors, predictors of injury and injury patterns in this age group.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of infants under age one who presented after a fall to a paediatric trauma centre in Sydney, Australia. Circumstances and mechanisms of the fall, injur

BACKGROUND: Widely varying crash circumstances have been reported for bicycling injuries, likely because of differing bicycling populations and environments. We used data from the Bicyclists' Injuries and the Cycling Environment Study in Vancouver and Toronto, Canada, to describe the crash circumstances of people injured while cycling for utilitarian and leisure purposes. We examined the association of crash circumstances with route type.
METHODS: Adult cyclists injured and treated in a hospital emergency department described their crash circumstances. These were classified into major categor

OBJECTIVE: We sought to explain the recent increase in the death rate from falls among Americans aged 65 years and older.
METHODS: Using the CDC WONDER online database, a longitudinal analysis of subgroups of fall mortality based on the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) was conducted in older adults and in younger people. We used linear regression to examine the statistical significance of trends in mortality rates during 1999-2007.
RESULTS: The overall mortality rate from falls increased by 55% among older Americans (≥65 years of age) during 1999-2007, from 29

OBJECTIVES: Short-distance household falls are a common occurrence in young children, but are also a common false history given by caretakers to conceal abusive trauma. The purpose of this study was to determine the severity of injuries that result from accidental short-distance household falls in children, and to investigate the association of fall environment and biomechanical measures with injury outcomes.
METHODS: Children aged 0-4 years who presented to the Emergency Department with a history of a short furniture fall were included in the study. Detailed case-based biomechanical assessme

PURPOSE: As a highly heterogeneous group, seniors live in complex environments influenced by multiple physical and social structures that affect their safety. Until now, the major approach to falls research has been person centered. However, in industrial settings, the individuals involved in an accident are seen as the inheritors of system defects. The objective of the present study was to investigate safety deficiencies that contributed to falls in community-dwelling seniors using a systems approach.
DESIGN AND METHODS: The investigations were conducted using the Seniors Falls Investigation

This study wanted to search for potential risk factors associated with falls from windows and balconies in order to eventually improve prevention. All children under the age of 16 years suffering from head injuries/multiple trauma due to falls from windows or balconies treated over the last 7 years at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the University Children's Hospital Zürich were analysed retrospectively (group A). Fifty patients out of all children suffering from head injuries/multiple trauma due to other types of accidents in the same period were selected at random as controls (group B). Out

New technologies designed to help prevent adverse events related to the mobility of geriatric patients (ie, patient falls, bed-rail entrapment, patient handling, and wandering) are described. Technology offers the potential to eliminate or mitigate preventable adverse events that interfere with treatment, delay rehabilitation, potentiate impairment, and compromise patient safety. Unchecked, these adverse events can have a negative impact on patient health, functional status, and quality of life. It is not surprising that the elderly constitute the population at highest risk for adverse events,

A major factor governing independence for the elderly and persons with disabilities is the ability to stand from a chair. Factors such as pain, reduced joint range of motion, stiffness, and muscle weakness frequently limit the ability to stand. Sit-to-stand position is even further reduced in patients whose hands and shoulders are afflicted with rheumatoid arthritis. When achieving a sit-to-stand position in the elderly and persons with disabilities, there is considerable risk of the individual falling and sustaining bone fracture. The purposes of this scientific report are to achieve the foll

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The risk of falls is very high among stroke patients, and falling is a major complication in stroke rehabilitation. This study aimed to investigate the incidence, characteristics, and consequences of falls in an inpatient stroke rehabilitation setting.
METHODS: One hundred sixty-one patients consecutively admitted to a geriatric stroke rehabilitation unit were studied. Falls that occurred during their rehabilitation stay were prospectively registered and analyzed.
RESULTS: Sixty-two of the patients (39%) suffered falls. The total number of falls was 153, which corresp

A total of 181 patients with 254 injured nerves in the upper limbs were prospectively studied. The ages of the patients ranged from 6 weeks to 70 years, with a mean of 25.9 years and a male to female ratio of 4:1. The site of injury for 123 nerves in 83 patients was the wrist. A torn wound was the commonest type of injury, causing nerve damage in 127 patients. The ulnar nerve (114) was more frequently involved than other nerves. There were 92 median, 34 radial and 14 cervicobrachial nerves. The nerve injury was missed at the initial emergency operation in 31 patients (17 per cent). Glass of va
