Plasma levels of calcium, magnesium, phosphate, and protein were measured on the first day of life (cord blood) and at the age of 1 week, in infants fed on breast milk or on one of three cow's milk preparations. The plasma calcium fell in all patients over the first 24 hours. Breast-fed infants, in all but three instances, showed a rise of calcium in the following 5 to 7 days. There was no mean change in calcium concentration for the other feeds over this period, and about a third of these infants showed a fall: in 9% to below 7·5 mg/100 ml. In 8 out of 32 juvenile patients suffering from chronic polyarthritis and in one patient with dermatomyositis, raised transaminase levels were found; the salicylate level was above 35 mg/100 ml in all except one. Reduction in the salicylate level led to a prompt fall in the serum transaminases. Despite a rise in alkaline phosphatase in three cases there was no other evidence of liver dysfunction in the children. Only one of the adults showed a rise in transaminase levels, and she had mild cirrhosis.

In 11 patients with bronchial asthma, lung volumes, FEV1·0, PaO2, and lung diffusing capacity (single breath CO method) were measured in status asthmaticus and after recovery. Ventilatory capacity improved following therapy. The improvement was associated with a rise in vital capacity and a fall in residual volume, but the total lung capacity might either decrease, increase or remain unchanged. Four rapid glucose injections of 5 g each were administered to normal young adult subjects before, during, and after an infusion of glucose. After the first glucose pulse, insulin responses measured immunologically reached a peak between 3 and 5 min and rapidly returned to base line. Zinc is an essential trace element. Previous methods of measuring zinc in clinical material have been difficult and reported findings must be treated with caution. Using atomic absorption spectroscopy it has been established that plasma zinc is one of the most uniform biochemical characteristics of normal adult blood. Sex and age differences in adult life are insignificant. Increased metabolic activity, on the other hand, induces a marked, immediate fall in plasma zinc level. The case histories of two patients with penicillin-induced haemolytic anaemia are presented. Studies of the circadian rhythm in plasma 11-O.H.C.S. levels showed that a subgroup of affective psychotics had higher plasma 11-OHCS values as compared with schizophrenic and other psychotic subgroups, and a somewhat less regular rhythm. One patient with depression who was studied over 48-hour periods showed a reduction in plasma 11-OHCS levels with clinical recovery. An accentuated fall and rise in plasma 11-OHCS values in the night and early morning samples, respectively, was observed in the schizophrenic subgroup.

Measurements of the topographical distribution of pulmonary blood flow and ventilation have been made in 26 subjects with chronic irreversible obstructive lung disease using a radioactive xenon scanning technique. There is a significant fall in the serum folic acid level during pregnancy, reaching its lowest level at term. This is most pronounced in twin pregnancies. A similar but less spectacular fall occurs in the vitamin B(12) concentration. In megaloblastic anaemia both folic acid and vitamin B(12) levels are lower than in other pregnant women.
