The effect of (+)-lysergic acid diethylamide and other drugs on the carotid sinus reflex.

In cats, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) selectively blocked the reflex blood pressure rise following carotid chemoreceptor stimulation. It also reduced or abolished the chemoreceptor component of the pressor response to occlusion of the common carotid arteries. It did not inhibit the respiratory reflexes arising from the carotid chemoreceptors, unless spontaneous respiration was interfered with as a whole. The site of action was central, probably below the intercollicular level, regardless of whether the drug was administered by the intravenous route or into the lateral ventricle of the brai

Serological studies of yaws in Thailand.

The serological aspects of anti-yaws campaigns are discussed. Serological reactions in untreated yaws are considered according to each type of lesion and by age-groups; the serological pattern in types I and II show much similarity in that the majority of cases fall in the high titre levels while with types IV and V there appears to be a more even distribution of cases at all titre levels. A uniform serological response is seen in the early lesions for all age-groups and this is also true of hyperkeratosis cases. There are more type IV cases among the younger age-groups showing high titres, wh

BIOCHEMICAL STUDIES ON SHOCK : III. THE ROLE OF THE LIVER AND THE HEPATIC CIRCULATION IN THE METABOLIC CHANGES DURING HEMORRHAGIC SHOCK IN THE RAT AND THE CAT.

1. In a series of rats subjected to hemorrhage and shock a high negative correlation was found between the portal and peripheral venous oxygen saturations and the arterial blood pressure on the one hand, and the blood amino nitrogen levels on the other, and a high positive correlation between the portal and the peripheral oxygen saturations and between each of these and the blood pressure. 2. In five cats subjected to hemorrhage and shock the rise in plasma amino nitrogen and the fall in peripheral and portal venous oxygen saturations were confirmed. Further it was shown that the hepatic vein

STUDIES ON EXPERIMENTAL HYPERTENSION : IX. THE EFFECT ON BLOOD PRESSURE OF CONSTRICTION OF THE ABDOMINAL AORTA ABOVE AND BELOW THE SITE OF ORIGIN OF BOTH MAIN RENAL ARTERIES.

Constriction of the aorta just above the origin of both main renal arteries invariably resulted in elevation of the carotid systolic and carotid mean pressure. The hypertension was not immediate, but developed in about the same time as after constriction of the main renal arteries (3). Constriction of the aorta just below the origin of both main renal arteries had no significant effect on the carotid systolic or carotid mean pressure. Since these results were first reported (1), Rytand (88, 89) has shown by an indirect method, namely, the demonstration of the development of cardiac hypertrophy

ON THE MECHANISM OF MILK SECRETION : THE INFLUENCE OF INSULIN AND PHLORIDZIN.

The four types of experiments on milk secretion herein described really fall into one general class so far as the physiological effects produced are concerned. Starvation lowers the blood sugar and raises the osmotic pressure of the blood. The experiment using parathyroid hormone with or without starvation may have its effects interpreted as simply due to starvation since 1000 units of this hormone produced no visible effects on the blood calcium or milk constituents different from those of starvation. Since insulin produces a marked and rapid drop in blood sugar it too may be looked upon as a

STUDIES UPON THE PHYSIOLOGICAL ACTION OF HEMATOPORPHYRIN.

THE RESULTS OF THESE OBSERVATIONS MAY BE BRIEFLY SUMMARIZED AS FOLLOWS: Feeding of hematoporphyrin to white mice over long periods of time produced no apparent changes in these animals and had no effect upon their sensitivity to light. Albino and slightly pigmented mice and rats injected with hematoporphyrin were protected from the rays of the sun by staining them a blue-black color with Verhoeff's hematoxylin. The dioxyphenylalanine (Dopa) reaction revealed no changes in the cutaneous pigment of animals injected with hematoporphyrin and exposed to sunlight, kept in the dark or diffused daylig

THE REACTION OF COW'S MILK TO BLOOD SERUM PRECIPITIN.

It seems well established that during normal lactation there passes a slight but well defined quantity of blood protein into the udder. When a specific serum precipitin is applied to diluted milk the reaction occurs at a relatively uniform level of dilution. This line may well be considered the normal level of blood protein elimination. In the main the serum protein level is the same when mastitis streptococci are present as when they are absent, provided they are not too numerous. On the other hand it has been shown that when streptococci are present in large numbers the milk while apparently

THE EFFECT OF SODIUM CHLORIDE ON THE CHEMICAL CHANGES IN THE BLOOD OF THE DOG AFTER PYLORIC AND INTESTINAL OBSTRUCTION.

Experiments to determine the effect of furnishing an ample supply of sodium chloride on the toxemia of pyloric and intestinal obstruction are reported. A fall in chlorides is the first and seemingly most significant change to take place in the blood after pyloric and intestinal obstruction. The chloride is apparently utilized by the body as a protective measure against the primary toxic substance. Two dogs with pyloric obstruction were given 50 cc. of 10 per cent NaCl subcutaneously daily. One lived 3 days, the other 4. The blood showed little change, except a marked terminal rise in chlorides

THE BIOLOGICAL AND THE SEROLOGICAL REACTIONS OF INFLUENZA BACILLI PRODUCING MENINGITIS.

1. An attempt has been made to standardize the cultural and the serological work on influenza bacilli. As technique and knowledge improve cultural and serological characteristics may be shown to be different from those reported here. The results are constant enough for comparison as they were obtained under as nearly similar conditions as possible. 2. Of thirteen meningitic strains of Bacillus influenzae isolated by different workers during a period of 7 years, eleven are alike culturally and fall into two groups by absorption of agglutinin tests; seven are in Group 1, three in Group 2, with o

CLINICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL OBSERVATIONS UPON CHEYNE-STOKES RESPIRATION.

IN ADDITION TO THE RESULTS BROUGHT OUT IN THE SEPARATE SECTIONS I WISH TO DIRECT ESPECIAL ATTENTION TO THE FOLLOWING CONCLUSIONS: (1) In ten cases of Cheyne-Stokes respiration observed clinically, the alternate periods of respiratory activity and apnoea were associated with Traube-Hering waves of blood pressure. These cases may be separated into two groups characterized by the relation of the respiratory changes to the changes of blood pressure. In one group the period of respiratory activity was associated with a rise of blood pressure, the period of apnoea with a fall; in the other group, th

THE RESUSCITATION OF THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM OF MAMMALS.

The cerebral circulation was interrupted for periods of three to eighty-one minutes by ligation of the innominate and left subclavian arteries proximal to the origin of the vertebral, in ninety-three cats. Eleven dogs were used in the earlier experiments. The eye reflexes disappear very quickly and a period of high blood pressure follows the occlusion immediately; vagus inhibition causes cardiac slowing and a fall in blood pressure, followed by a second rise after the vagus center succumbs to anaemia. Respiration stops temporarily (twenty to sixty seconds) after the beginning of occlusion, and
