We measured the short-circuit current (Isc) across canine tracheal epithelium and the intracellular cAMP levels of the surface epithelial cells in the same tissues to assess the role of cAMP as a mediator of electrogenic Cl secretion. The Normalised Specific Activity (NSA), a quantity which relates the concentration of a contaminant per unit mass of vegetation to its daily rate of ground deposition, has been used as the basis for determining interception factors and retention half-lives for radioactive contaminants deposited on grain and leafy vegetables. Natural intestinal infection of Isospora in the domestic Sparrow was studied during one year on a farm in Normandy. This survey showed many species and constant multiple infections. Some species were present all year, others were found only at certain times of the year; intensity varied with species and season. The following serum constituents were measured in 19 patients operated on for Graves' disease: calcium, protein, parathyroid hormone (PTH), alkaline phosphatase, thyroxine, triiodothyronine, free thyroxine index, and thyroid-stimulating hormone. Blood was sampled systematically on the day before and 5 days, 1 month, 2, 3, 4 and 6 months after operation. All patients were pretreated with antithyroid drugs, and 2 months before surgery levothyroxine was added. The study showed that the thyroid function was impaired for 3 months postoperatively. Serum calcium level was lowered in the same period.

Antigens and corresponding sera were collected from travellers with leishmaniasis returning to Germany from different endemic areas of the old world. The antigenicity of these Leishmania strains, which were maintained in Syrian hamsters, was compared by indirect immunofluorescence (IFAT). Antigenicity was demonstrated by antibody titres in 18 sera from 11 patients. The amastigotic stages of nine strains of Leishmania donovani and four strains of Leishmania tropica were compared with each other and with the culture forms of insect flagellates (Strigomonas oncopelti and Leptomonas ctenocephali).

The vascular effects of arginine vasopressin (AVP) were examined in conscious Sprague-Dawley rats. Twelve asthmatics (ages 8 to 33 yr) with proven exercise-induced asthma (EIA) and allergen-induced asthma (AIA) were investigated in an attempt to elucidate the pathways through which each type of attack develops. Presented here is the pregnancy outcome of 2,081 women who had one or more previous induced abortions compared with the outcome of 4,098 matched control subjects without a history of abortion. Data were collected from records and interviews of women delivering spontaneously at nine California hospitals during a 16-month period, 1976 to 1978. Insulin resistance was quantified with two different methods in 30 subjects with varying degrees of glucose tolerance. One method, the insulin suppression test, is performed by continuously infusing epinephrine, propranolol, insulin, and glucose. Epinephrine and propranolol suppress endogenous insulin release, and steady-state plasma levels of exogenous insulin and glucose are reached in all individuals.
