Hemicastration of male rats produced rapid changes in plasma testosterone (T) levels both in summer and in winter. However, in winter, after unilateral castration, the duration of T maximum decrease was found to be longer, but the compensatory increase of blood T following its drop was more dramatic as compared to the summer season. Modifications of the plasma level of immunoreactive parathyroid hormone (PTH) in cattle were induced by changes of the plasma concentrations of epinephrine, isoproterenol, or calcium. Timolol given on a twice-daily schedule has shown both antihypertensive effectiveness and plasma renin-suppressing action in eight patients with mild or moderate hypertension. However, the causal relationship between the drug plasma level, blood pressure fall, and change in plasma renin activity was not so clearly demonstrated in the present study. For 164 days mature chickens received a daily diet containing 40 g of wheat treated with organomercurial fungicide and 80 g of untreated diet. A control group received 120 g of normal diet daily. We have studied the variations of endogenous cyclic AMP levels in thyroid cells cultured over a period of 7 days in several conditions: in the presence of thyroid-stimulating hormone or dibutyryl cyclic AMP which both promote the aggregation of isolated cells into follicles, and in their absence when cells develop as a typical monolayer.
