Shelf-inflicted head injuries.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the diagnostic yield of cranial computed tomography (CT) imaging in patients who sustained minor head trauma after directly hitting their head on a shelf or cupboard, without an associated fall. The study aimed to assess whether such low-impact mechanisms warrant cranial imaging. METHODS: This was a retrospective observational study conducted at the emergency department of a major trauma centre in the United Kingdom. Data were extracted from the institutional Radiology Information System and electronic health records, covering the period from June 2006 to April 2025. An in

Impalement Injuries in Children: Patterns, Management, and Outcomes From a 10-Year Single-Center Review.

BACKGROUND: Impalement injuries in children, though rare, pose unique diagnostic and surgical challenges due to unpredictable trajectories and frequent involvement of multiple organ systems. Literature is limited to isolated reports and small series, with few comprehensive analyses from pediatric populations. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of pediatric impalement injuries managed at a tertiary children's hospital over 10 years (July 2015-June 2025). These patients were first encountered by the general surgery and critical care team in the trauma center initially and were subsequ

Fatal fall causing isolated thoracic impalement with bi-ventricular cardiac rupture.

Falls from a height usually cause blunt trauma involving multiple body regions, but penetrating injuries are relatively uncommon; they occur when a rigid object penetrates the body. This can cause catastrophic internal damage depending on the structures involved. We report a fatal case of isolated thoracic impalement in a 49-year-old man who reportedly fell from a tree onto a pointed wooden stave. He was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital. Medico-legal autopsy revealed a penetrating injury traversing the thorax from the left posterolateral chest to the right upper anterolateral chest, with

Parental Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices on First Aid for Home Injuries in Children Under 5 in Palestine: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Unintentional home injuries are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among children younger than 5 years. Parents are the first responders to such emergencies; however, evidence on their first-aid knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) remains scarce in Palestine, where nation-wide injury surveillance data are limited. AIMS: To assess parents' KAP regarding first aid for home-related injuries among children younger than 5 years in the West Bank, Palestine, and to examine selected demographic characteristics as correlates of KAP scores. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectio

MRI and histological features of supraspinatus tendon degeneration in rotator cuff tears: An underexplored perspective.

BackgroundThe supraspinatus muscle and tendon are an integral part of shoulder joint function and stability. The supraspinatus tendon is one of the four tendons forming the rotator cuff in the shoulder. Supraspinatus tendon tear is a frequent lesion that occurs due to various causes like lifting heavy objects, falls onto the shoulder, a dislocation of the shoulder, swimming, trauma, sports injury, occupational activity and degenerative change. Smoking, hypercholesterolemia, and hereditary predisposition are all established risk factors for developing RC tears, which affect the age dependent te

Factors associated with unplanned emergency department return visits after mild traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: Mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) account for millions of emergency department (ED) visits annually. Persistent symptoms may prompt unplanned return visits (URVs), but the frequency and associated factors remain unclear. This study examined whether patient characteristics, injury mechanism, clinical workflow, discharge instructions, and follow-up plans were associated with ED URVs. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of patients presenting with mTBI to a suburban academic hospital. Exclusions included psychiatric illness, positive findings on diagnostic head imagi

Social inequities in injury-attributable emergency department visits across Alberta: an ecological study.

BACKGROUND: Injury is a leading cause of death and disability in Canada, and injury rates are disproportionately higher in Alberta. Limited evidence suggests that social inequities, including income inequality, may contribute to injury risk through differential exposure to hazards and unequal access to prevention and care. The objective of this study is to examine the ecological association between income inequality and rates of injury-attributable emergency department (ED) visits in Alberta from 2013 to 2022. METHODS: Data on social inequities were from the 2016 Census and injury-attributabl

Using Remote Behavioral Skills Training to Teach University Students Literature Searching Skills.

BACKGROUND: The presence of bacteria in bile is an important factor in the formation of pigment gallstones. The bile of healthy people is sterile and bacteria in the biliary system come from endogenous infection from the gut. Yet, the route of bacterial translocation into the bile duct is still unclear. Theoretically, two routes exist: one is through the intestinal barrier and the other is by direct reflux from the sphincter of Oddi. This study was undertaken to explore the relationship between the effectiveness of intestinal barrier and the formation of pigment gallstones in hamsters. METHOD

Individualization and Purification of Carbon Nanothreads.

Notwithstanding the synthesis of many types of carbon nanothreads with different structures, compositions, and theoretical property predictions, the experimental verification of thread properties remains challenging due to a paucity of techniques to disperse as-grown solid-state nanothread samples. In this work, we demonstrate that pyridine-derived carbon nitride nanothread samples can be intercalated with potassium to produce reduced carbon nitride nanothreads that can be readily dispersed in polar organic solvents such as dimethyl sulfoxide. Atomic force microscopy of thin films produced fro

Association Between Trauma Mechanism and Mandibular Fracture Pattern: A 13-Year Retrospective Analysis at a Regional Trauma Center.

The mandible, due to its anatomical position, mobility, and functional role, is one of the bones most frequently involved in maxillofacial trauma, with fracture patterns influenced by impact mechanisms and anatomical characteristics. This study aimed to analyse the relationship between trauma mechanisms and affected anatomical subsites in patients with isolated mandibular fractures treated at a regional public hospital in Buenos Aires Province. A retrospective cross-sectional observational study was conducted using medical records, surgical reports, and diagnostic imaging of patients treated b

Pierced by Force: Forensic reconstruction of two fatal High-Energy Workplace impalements.

Impalement injuries represent a rare but forensically relevant form of penetrating trauma that combines characteristics of both blunt and sharp force injury. The mechanisms and reconstruction of such injuries are often complex, particularly in the context of high-energy occupational accidents. Two fatal occupational cases with unusual impalement-like mechanisms are presented. In the first case, a construction worker was struck by a falling metal scaffold tube, resulting in a vertical cranial impalement with destruction of the occipital region and posterior skull base. In the second case, a wor

Klumpke's Palsy Following Minor Trauma: A Rare Presentation in a Young Adult.

The brachial plexus is a complex network that transmits motor and sensory signals between the spinal cord and the upper limbs. Klumpke's palsy, a rare injury affecting the lower brachial plexus (C8-T1 roots), commonly occurs in newborns or adults after severe trauma and is characterized by a claw-hand deformity, sensory loss along the medial forearm and hand and weakness in the small muscles of the hand. Adult-onset Klumpke's palsy following minor trauma is exceptionally rare. We report a unique case of isolated right-sided Klumpke's palsy in a 31-year-old male after a trivial fall from bed. N

Devastating genital injury leads to degloving and rerouting of the penis: An unusual case report in an 8-year-old child.

Penetrating penile injuries are rare in children. Thus, the evaluation and management of this type of injury have not been well described. Penile trauma in children varies in severity from trivial to more severe, with devastating functional and psychosocial consequences. Here, we report the case of an 8-year-old boy who suffered a penetrating penile injury as a result of falling from a height onto a sharp object, necessitating rerouting of the penis. After stabilization, the patient was subjected to careful surgical exploration and meticulous reconstructive surgery. The final outcome was excel

Concomitant anorectal and posterior urethral injury caused by straddle injury: A case report.

Straddle injury is the most common cause of genital injuries in children and is defined as an injury resulting from a blunt impact to the perineum due to a fall onto a hard object. This type of injury tends to affect the anterior perineum, and the perianal area is usually spared. Herein, we report a unique case of straddle injury that resulted in concomitant anorectal and posterior urethral injuries due to an atypical impact to the posterior perineum.

What happens when an athlete suffers a concussion outside of sport? An in-depth analysis of non-sport-related concussion in adolescent athletes.

INTRODUCTION: Sport-related concussion (SRC) has been widely studied in high school athletes, yet non-sport-related concussion (non-SRC) has received less attention. Thus, in a cohort of high school athletes diagnosed with non-SRC, we sought to: 1) describe demographic characteristics, medical history, and recovery patterns, and 2) compare injury severity and recovery outcomes across common non-SRC mechanisms. METHODS: The current retrospective cohort study included athletes aged 14-18 years who sustained non-SRCs and presented to a regional concussion center between 11/2017-04/2022. Concussi

Penetrating thoracic spinal cord injury caused by a wooden fragment after a ground-level fall: A case report.

Penetrating spinal cord injuries caused by wooden foreign bodies are extremely rare, especially following a low-energy incident at home. We report a case of an older man in his 80s who developed complete paraplegia after a wooden fragment from a shoji screen impaled his back from a fall at ground level. Computed tomography scans showed a linear foreign object penetrating the posterior thorax and reaching the spinal canal at T10-11 and T11-12, without vascular damage. The patient was transferred to our hospital with the foreign body still in place. The fragment was carefully extracted in the em

A Clinically Relevant Threshold of Impaired Contrast Sensitivity Among Older US Adults.

IMPORTANCE: Contrast sensitivity (CS) is a critical yet underused measure of visual function that reflects the ability to detect subtle differences in luminance between an object and its background. Although poor CS is associated with falls, cognitive decline, and reduced independence in older adults, existing thresholds lack functional relevance. OBJECTIVE: To identify a CS threshold associated with functional visual disability. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This longitudinal cohort study used data from rounds 12 (2022) and 13 (2023) of the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS

Sequential deep brain stimulation of anterior and centromedian nuclei in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Neuromodulation, including deep brain stimulation (DBS), is a treatment option for patients with medically intractable epilepsy who do not meet candidacy for resective surgery. DBS of the anterior nucleus of the thalamus (ANT) has been FDA approved for focal epilepsy, and stimulation of the centromedian nucleus of the thalamus (CMT) is increasingly being explored for generalized epilepsies including juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME). The authors present the case of a patient with JME and medically intractable seizures who underwent bilateral, sequential ANT and CMT DBS implantation
