The comparative susceptibility of 622 recent clinical isolates of anaerobic bacteria to minocycline, doxycycline, and tetracycline was determined by an agar-dilution technique. In addition to Bacteroides fragilis, a variety of other anaerobic bacteria was resistant to achievable blood concentrations of tetracycline (55% inhibited by 6.25 mug/ml) and doxycycline (58% inhibited by 2.5 mug/ml). 13 families of patients on chronic hemodialysis (with young children at home) were contacted by the social worker. Only seven of them agreed to a family interview, which took place at the patient's home. Although the interviews were unstructured some topics were brought up by all families and similar behavior was observed. Specially striking was the lack of empathy as well as of hostility between the parents, while a lot of hostility against all human environment was expressed and children's attempts at expressing empathy were suppressed.

Some individuals develop hepatitis, others form antibody which may persist for a long period, and others may become persistent carriers of Australia antigen. Neck-uptake studies, thyroid scintiscans and triiodothyronine (T4)-kinetic studies were performed in normal rabbits and in animals producing antibodies against thyroid hormones. The in vitro activity of amphotericin B and 5-fluorocytosine against 40 isolates of different species of Candida was studied. Synergism was seen in 35 of 40 organisms studied (88%) with achievable serum concentrations of the antibiotics. Synergism was striking in many strains that were resistant to 5-fluorocytosine. When the minimal inhibitory concentration of 5-fluorocytosine was greater than 400 mug/ml, synergism was seen in 18 of 20 isolates of Candida (90%).

Cefatrizine (SK&F 60771), a new orally-active semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, was compared with cephalexin and cefazolin for in vitro and in vivo antibacterial activity and pharmacokinetic behavior in laboratory animals. Acetohydroxamic acid (AHA) is a potent inhibitor of urease which prevents alkalinization of urine and stone formation in rats in the presence of infection caused by urease-producing bacteria. Because an antibacterial effect of AHA, and synergy between kanamycin and AHA have also been described, we studied the interaction between AHA and 12 antibiotics against 14 gram-negative bacteria. Synergy, sometimes to a striking degree, was found in 17% of interactions; however, antagonism was detected in 5%.
