Gentamicin was measured in the presence of clindamycin by using as the assay organism a strain of Staphylococcus aureus that was resistant to clindamycin; clindamycin was measured in the presence of gentamicin by using Clostridium perfringens as the assay organism. Both assays were in agar diffusion systems, were rapid (2 to 4 h), and had errors of less than 10%. Neither antibiotic antagonized or synergized with the other against a variety of organisms. Assays of lymphocyte subpopulations and function have been applied to cells from the cord blood of twenty-four infants. The results are compared with those obtained in healthy adults. T cells, assayed by spontaneous rosette formation with sheep red blood cells (E rosettes) were present in lower proportion in cord (53%) than in adult blood (65%). The virulence of gonococcal strains and colony types was evaluated in embryonated hen eggs of various ages inoculated by different routes. Striking differences in virulence of colony types were revealed by intravenous inoculation of 11-day embryos. Studies of mice with medium and long life-spans were undertaken to determine whether the autoantibodies that occur in disease and in aging are due to a common underlying cause or to separate mechanisms. Results were obtained using untreated and trypsinized syngeneic red blood cells (RBC) to detect anti-RBC autoantibodies in the plasma of aged mice. By using the non-metabolized cytidine analogue, cytosine arabinoside, it was possible to examine the mechanism of nucleoside transport in the immature rat uterus in the absence of intracellular utilization of the permeant. It was demonstrated that the uptake of cytosine arabinoside is not accumulative and that it can be competitively inhibited by the addition of a second nucleoside, uridine. Introduction of a concentration gradient of uridine from the medium towards the intracellular water promotes the counterflow of cytosine arabinoside out of the cells against its concentration gradient.
