Though in the past Xiphinema americanum has been the most commonly reported dagger nematode in the eastern United States, our studies revealed the presence in Pennsvlvania of a previously unrecognized and unreported species related to X. americanum, Morphometric data and photomicrographs establish the identity of this form as X. rivesi and show expected variations in populations of this species from various locations. In greenhouse tests using potted grape plants three nematicides, aldicarb 10 G at 4.5 ai/ha, phenamiphos 15 G at 22 kg ai/ha, and oxamyl liquid at 4.5 kg ai/ha, were tested against Xiphinema index on 'Thompson Seedless' grape. The kinetics of secretion of proteins by Leishmania braziliensis was followed by incorporation of [3H]leucine into macromolecules produced by the cells which are released into the growth medium. About 10% of the total protein synthesized by actively growing cells is secreted. Cycloheximide (100 microgram/ml) and puromycin (0.5 mM) inhibited the incorporation of labelled leucine by 85 and 99%, respectively. Unfolded RNase A is known to contain an equilibrium mixture of two forms, a slow-folding form (U(1)) and a fast-folding form (U(2)). If U(1) is produced after unfolding by the slow cis-trans isomerization of proline residues about X-Pro imide bonds, then the formation of U(1) should be catalyzed by strong acids. Different species of methanogenic bacteria growing on CO(2) and H(2) were shown to remove CO added to the gas phase. Rates up to 0.2 mumol of CO depleted/min per 10 ml of culture containing approximately 7 mg of cells (wet weight) were observed. The temperature dependence of permeation across human red cell membranes has been determined for a series of hydrophilic and lipophilic solutes, including urea and two methyl substituted derivatives, all the straight-chain amides from formamide through valeramide and the two isomers, isobutyramide and isovaleramide. A marker-specific and strongly temperature-dependent reaction was observed to occur at a time during transformation in Diplococcus pneumoniae after the donor deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) had acquired single-strand properties and immediately preceding the integration of these strands into the recipient chromosome. Operationally, it was observed as the prevention of an intracellular inactivation process, also described in this paper, which is specific for low molecular weight or for damaged DNA, and which occurs if the recipient cells are held at suboptimal temperatures after the DNA has entered.

Angular displacement from linear overlap of but a few degrees in the transition state of the enzyme-substrate complex has been postulated to be of great kinetic significance ("orbital steering"). Electronic-to-vibrational transfer has been observed for the process Hg* (6(3)P(1,0)) + HF(upsilon=0) ? Hg(6(1)S(0)) + HFdagger(upsilon=1-6).
