Nematode population trends and vertical distribution were monitored in a southwest Michigan vineyard (Vitis labrusca cv. Concord) from 1976 through 1983. Shallow (20 cm) and deep (90 cm) applications of 1,3-dichloropropene applied at 281 (shallow) plus 658 or 1,122 (deep) liters/ ha provided excellent control of Xiphinema americanum, Criconemella xenoplax, and Meloidogyne hapla. Populations of X. americanum remained below detectable levels for the entire 8-year experimental period where the fumigant was applied. The effect of tunicamycin (TM) on Leishmania braziliensis promastigotes in culture has been studied. TM at different concentrations (2, 4, 6 micrograms/ml) inhibits promastigote growth as the mean generation time of control cells, 36 hr, is changed to 41, 46 and 55 hr, respectively. The following case report describes an accidental stabbing that occurred on Halloween. The unwitting victim, while preparing for a holiday charade, stabbed himself with an ornamental dagger. By placing himself in a potentially hazardous situation, the victim's behavior entailed risk taking. The psychological implications of such risk taking are complex, and may be compared to such behaviors as russian roulette, gambling, and parasuicide.

The dissolution and degradation of dagger-endotoxin (crystal) of Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki strain HD-1 were investigated. Crystals were dissolved in 0.1 M phosphate-carbonate-NaOH buffer at pH > 12. Thirty-eight grapevine (Vitis spp.) rootstocks were screened in pots for resistance to the dagger nematode, Xiphinema index, from 1979 to 1981. The midday "sun dagger" solstice and equinox marker on Fajada Butte in Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, is formed by three sandstone slabs that collimate sunlight onto two spiral petroglyphs. The slabs appear to be the result of a natuiral rockfall and not a construct of the Chacoan Anasazi. Although neither the rockfall nor the petroglyphs can be dated accurately, it is likely that the petroglyphs were designed after the rockfall by people who observed the details of the light pattern for several annual cycles.

In greenhouse tests using potted grape plants three nematicides, aldicarb 10 G at 4.5 ai/ha, phenamiphos 15 G at 22 kg ai/ha, and oxamyl liquid at 4.5 kg ai/ha, were tested against Xiphinema index on 'Thompson Seedless' grape. The kinetics of secretion of proteins by Leishmania braziliensis was followed by incorporation of [3H]leucine into macromolecules produced by the cells which are released into the growth medium. About 10% of the total protein synthesized by actively growing cells is secreted. Cycloheximide (100 microgram/ml) and puromycin (0.5 mM) inhibited the incorporation of labelled leucine by 85 and 99%, respectively. If U(1) is produced after unfolding by the slow cis-trans isomerization of proline residues about X-Pro imide bonds, then the formation of U(1) should be catalyzed by strong acids.
