Evaluation of the Relationship between Pro-inflammatory Cyto-kines and Health Hazards in Workers Involved in Hazardous Waste Sites at Karnataka, India.

BACKGROUND: Most of the studies have reported higher occupational health haz¬ards on hazardous waste workers (HWW). However reports regarding the asso¬ciation between health hazards and pro-inflammatory cytokines in HWW are scanty. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the relationship between occupational health hazards and serum pro-inflammatory cytokines in HWW. METHODS: One hundred two subjects working in hazardous waste areas in differ¬ent parts of Bangalore at Karnataka, India were enrolled into the study in 2009. Using questionnaire the respiratory morbidity and other work relat

[Personnel at risk for occupational blood exposure in a university hospital in West Algeria].

The accidental occupational exposure of health care workers to blood or other body fluids after skin injury or mucous contact, constitutes a risk for the transmission of the hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) or human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV). This paper presents the results of a survey carried out over two years (January 2005 - December 2006) on reported occupational blood exposures (OBE). The study aimed to determine incidence, workers and professional categories at risk, and circumstances of OBE occurrence in order to identify avoidable cases and to orient prevention mea

Accidental exposure to blood in medical interns of Tehran University of Medical Sciences.

Healthcare workers and medical students are at risk of exposure to blood-borne viruses such as HBV, HCV HIV, etc. Here we report the results of a survey of the frequency and causes of cutaneous blood exposure accidents (CBEA) among medical students. Anonymous questionnaires were randomly distributed to 200 interns in their second year of internship in hospitals affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences. A definite exposure was defined as injury by a sharp object causing obvious bleeding, whereas a possible exposure was defined as subtle or superficial injury due to contact with a con

[A retrospective survey of childhood corporal punishment by school teachers in students].

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the prevalence of childhood corporal punishment by teachers in students, to explore the influencing factors and associations between childhood corporal punishment and psychological problems. METHODS: Five hundred and twenty-eight students from a college and a technical secondary school in Hebei province were surveyed by self-administered questionnaire anonymously in Dec. 2004. The questionnaire used for this survey mainly included (1) general demographic information; (2) 5 forms of childhood corporal punishments, in this study, cases of teachers' corporal punishments w

Transmission and prevention of occupational infections in orthopaedic surgeons.

Microorganisms are transmitted in hospitals mainly by contact, droplet, and airborne routes. Orthopaedic surgeons have a substantial occupational risk of contracting a blood-borne infection because of frequent handling of sharp instruments and objects during operative procedures. Aerosolization means the formation of aerosols and droplets when blood or other body fluids are mechanically disturbed. Smaller particles (<5 microm) will remain suspended in air. Pathogens that can survive in these small airborne particles may cause infection if they are inhaled. Aerosol-generating procedures in pati

Sharps disposal containers.

Sharps disposal containers are specially designed containers into which used needles and other medical-waste sharps are discarded. They are intended to protect hospital employees--including sharps users and other workers downstream--from sharps injuries that result from contact with needles and other sharp devices. Since our last Evaluation of sharps containers in August-September 1993, manufacturers have introduced various new designs that may further reduce the risk of needlesticks and other sharp-object injuries (SOIs). These designs are intended to prevent users from overfilling the sharps

X-ray crystallographic studies of eukaryotic transcription initiation factors.

TATA box-binding protein (TBP) is required by all three eukaryotic RNA polymerases for correct initiation of transcription of ribosomal, messenger, small nuclear and transfer RNAs. Since the first gene encoding a TBP was cloned, it has been the object of considerable biochemical and genetic study. Substantial progress has also been made on structural and mechanistic studies, including our three-dimensional crystal structures of TBP, TBP bound to a consensus TATA elements, and the ternary complex of transcription factor IIB (TFIIB) recognizing TBP bound to a TATA element. The structure of apo T

Infection prevention and control in the era of the AIDS/HIV epidemic.

The chronology of important events in the AIDS/HIV epidemic is presented in Table 2. Nurses are the largest group of health care workers and persons who provide direct care and handle sharp objects regularly. As the number of persons infected with HIV increases and as more infected persons become ill enough to require care, the opportunity for an individual nurse to have contact with an infected person will increase. Because many persons with HIV infection also have Kaposi's sarcoma and other malignancies, some oncology nurses may have more contact with HIV-infected individuals than nurses in

Getting ready for AIDS patients.

As of January 1988, over 51,000 cases of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) has been reported to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Nearly 90 percent occurred in individuals between 20 and 49 years of age. Approximately 90 percent were in males. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes AIDS, is transmitted by sexual contact, by exposure to infected blood or blood components, and perinatally from mother to neonate. In the healthcare setting, blood is the body fluid that has been implicated in transmission of HIV to healthcare workers. In 1983, the CDC began an ongoin

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type III (HTLV-III) infection: how it can affect you, your patients, and your anesthesia practice.

The effects of the current HTLV-III epidemic are of considerable significance to the general public and health care system. It is a new disease with diverse ramifications . . . not all of which are understood. Many drugs are being evaluated in clinical trials, but at present, they are not expected to be able to rid an infected individual of HTLV-III. There is hope for an effective vaccine, but its development is not anticipated in the near future. For now, prevention of exposure is our only means of decreasing HTLV-III transmission. We will be caring for increasing numbers of patients with HTL
