Differential radiological diagnosis of tuberculous sacroiliitis and bone involvement in Gaucher disease: a clinical case.

Differential diagnosis of bone involvement in patients with Gaucher disease can be challenging. Other diseases with similar radiological signs should be ruled out. Here we present a clinical case of tuberculous sacroiliitis in the patient with type I Gaucher disease. Advanced radiological methods of examination are described. Our case report proves the necessity of an individual approach to the management of such cohort of patients. Keywords: Gaucher disease, tuberculosis of bones and joints, differential diagnosis, comprehensive treatment.

Isolated tuberculosis of scapula in a young adult.

Tuberculosis (TB) of the scapula is a very rare presentation among tuberculosis of bones and joints. The following case report describes a rare case of tuberculosis involving the inferior angle of the scapula in a young, immune-competent adult presenting with pain, swelling and an osteolytic lesion over the inferior angle of the scapula with a cold abscess. The diagnosis was confirmed on histopathology and culture, with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) acting as an adjunct to an early diagnosis. The patient was managed successfully with surgical debridement and a four-drug anti-tuberculous reg

Osteoarticular tuberculosis-a three years' retrospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Extra pulmonary TB can be encountered in various organ systems, like lymph nodes, serous cavities, genitourinary tract, skeletal. Musculoskeletal TB can cause significant functional impairment. The clinical symptoms are variable, pain and swelling being common symptomatology. Investigations for suspected cases include radiological imaging, histopathological examination, bacteriological examination, and polymerase chain reaction. The mainstay of treatment is multidrug antitubercular chemotherapy. AIM: To study the cases of osteoarticular TB diagnosed on biopsy, to analyse the var

[90th anniversary of founding the first children's hospital in Serbia].

The founder was Dr. Katherine MacPhail, a young Scottish lady doctor, who came to Serbia for the first time in January 1915, with the first "Scottish Women's Hospital". After that, she worked as a volunteer during the First World War in France and on the Thessalonica Front. In the spring of 1919, the hospital was given an open pavilion in Topcider, which worked only during the summer months till 1924. In No

[A case of appendicular tuberculosis presenting as acute appendicitis].

Tuberculosis may affect primarily all organs and tissues of the body, although some of these show high immunity against the infection. The most common forms of non-pulmonary tuberculosis are tuberculosis of bones and joints (30%), urinary system (24%), lymph nodes (13%), sexual organs (8%), cerebrospinal meninges (4%), and alimentary system (3%). Especially, the commonest presentation of abdominal tuberculosis is ileocecal disease, but isolated appendicular involvement is also rarely seen, occurring in only 1.5% to 3% of cases in the absence of pulmonary or other abdominal involvement. One hundred years of orthopaedic education in Singapore.

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Malaya (in Singapore) was established in 1952. Prior to this, the teaching of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University was undertaken by the Department of Surgery under the Professor of Surgery and Professor of Clinical Surgery. From a course consisting of 15 weekly classes on fractures for 18 undergraduates in the late 1930s, and the clinical postings in orthopaedic surgery for over 40 students in 1952, the programme now encompasses an exposure to musculoskeletal diseases and trauma in all 5 years of the undergraduate course. Over this t

[François Calot's concepts about the treatment of osteoarticular tuberculosis].

François Calot proposed to cure the articular tuberculosis by punctures of the tuberculosis abscess and by immobilisation of the joint. He succeeded in many cases which had not to undergo surgery and his method was recognized as the best one till the arrival of the antibiotic (streptomycine) in 1948 which allowed to carry out surgery in the tuberculosis of bones and joints.

[Diagnostic features of tuberculosis in extra-pulmonary locations].

Bacteriological examination of patients with extralung tuberculosis is carried out, namely: tuberculosis of urino-genital organs, cerebral membranes and central nervous system, bones and joints, and also of peripheral lymphatic knots. Strains isolated under these diseases were examined for medical sensitivity to antibacterial drugs (ABD), their biochemical characteristics were studied. It was ascertained, that the strains of mycobacteria of tuberculosis (MBT), isolated under tuberculosis of cerebral membranes and central nervous system, tuberculosis of urino-genital organs, tuberculosis of bon

[Tuberculosis of respiratory organs concomitant with tuberculosis of bones and joints in young children].

Specific features of thoracic tuberculosis were studied in children with various forms of tuberculosis of bones and joints, i.e. tuberculous spondylitis, arthritis and osteitis. Peculiarities of the clinical course and of complications of thoracic tuberculosis were detected in children with the mentioned clinical forms, which are mostly pronounced in spinal tuberculosis and tuberculosis of joints. A complicated course of thoracic process predetermines the duration of treatment and affects the choice of time for surgical intervention.

[Chemotherapy regimens in osteoarticular tuberculosis in children during surgical treatment stages].

The outcomes of treatment in 280 children with tuberculosis of bones and joints are analyzed. A general chemotherapy scheme for tuberculosis makes treatment regimens recommend for use in different forms of osteoarticular tuberculosis, which have been differentiated by the site and rate of an osseous and intrathoracic process and by the magnitude of their complications. The regimens differed in dosages, routes, and duration of administration of antituberculous drugs.

Musculoskeletal surgery in eighteenth century America.

Surgeons in America in the eighteenth century treated wounds, fractures, dislocations, and gunshot injuries of the skeletal structures and also contended with osteomyelitis and tuberculosis of bones and joints. In meeting this challenge, they proved innovative, adaptive and courageous, and developed principles of surgery, some of which still are in use today.

Tuberculosis of bones and joints: diagnostic approaches.

Mycobacterial and routine aerobic and anaerobic cultures were made prospectively from 22 patients with bone and/or joint tuberculosis. Mycobacteria were found on direct smear in 6 patients (27.3%), on culture in 14 (63.6%) and on histological section in 5 (22.7%). In one patient routine culture at operation revealed growth of Nocardia asteroides and Moraxella catarrhalis in addition to a positive culture of mycobacteria. Routine sinus culture showed growth of Staphylococcus epidermis in 3 out of 8 patients with draining sinuses. Thus, isolation of avirulent pyogenic bacteria from an operative

[Tuberculosis of bones and joints].

In developing countries tuberculosis of the bones and joints is a disease with an endemic character. In industrialized nations it is also gaining importance again as a result of social problems and of cases of immune deficiency. After the bacteriologic/histologic diagnosis of tuberculosis of the bones and joints, the primary therapy is non-operative with immobilization and antituberculous chemotherapy. Nevertheless, there are indications when an abscess and arthrodesis or spondylodesis must be cleaned operatively. An absolute and urgent indication for operative cleansing and stabilization is a

Tuberculosis of bones and joints of the foot: an analysis of 22 cases.

Skeletal tuberculosis constitutes 1% to 3% of extrapulmonary cases and involvement of foot bones is rare. Lack of awareness and a confusing clinical and radiological picture often lead to a delay in diagnosis. We reviewed 23 feet seen over a 3.5-year period. Most cases were children or young adults less than 40 years of age; isolated bony involvement was seen in 10 feet, with the calcaneus being involved in five cases. Articular involvement at presentation was seen in 13 cases and these cases had significantly higher delays in diagnosis. Twenty cases responded to antitubercular therapy alone w
